Nathan Bredeson is an award-winning, Ottawa-based classical guitarist and composer. Nathan earned his Master of Music from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, where he studied with Rene Izquierdo.

Romanza: the Most Famous Classical Guitar Piece (Spanish Romance / Jeux interdits) | Nathan Bredeson
Romanza by Anonymous is without a doubt the most famous classical guitar piece ever written. Often referred to as the "Stairway to Heaven of classical guitar," this piece goes by many names, including "Spanish Romance," "Jeux interdits," named after the 1952 film of the same name, or simply "Romanza." It is sad that such a famous classical guitar piece has an unknown composer!
Romanza holds a special place in my heart and in my family's memory, as it was the piece I played for my grandmother the day before she died. She suffered from a terrible autoimmune disease and when it became clear that she would not last much longer my entire family flew in to Ottawa to be with her for her final days. She held out as long as she could, and passed away the night after we arrived. I was 13 at the time, and ever since then whenever the family gets together they still ask me to play "Nanny's Song." I don't know why it took me so long to make a professional recording of this piece, but I am glad that I was able to express in the music just how much Romanza means to me. This one's for you, Nanny.

What tuning is this played in? Very nice...
Just drop D! The original piece is in F Minor, but I transposed it to G Minor to make it a little more idiomatic to the guitar.

Could be a spanish traditional piece... although its from France it feels like beeing in the mountains of the "ancient" Baleares during a warm, sunny day...
It's interesting how the sound of the guitar is so evocative. It often completely transforms the feeling of the piece just with it's timbre. Very unique to our instrument! Thanks for watching :)

Where can I buy this sheet ? Artist normally hate money, but they don´t have any. They loose a lot not seeling online their transcriptions. So many people beg for some. So sad. World loses the propagation of good music. Artists, as musicians, as usually don´t have what to eat the next day. I truly understand why musical producers earn more. And why in biographies artist end up in misery. Their "capitalist" brain is stunted.

Amazing and inspiring! Especially love the harmonic shredding at the end! I'm working on a version myself... From what I can tell, you've transposed the piece from Fm to Gm.... yet you hit that bassline F# on the third fret... what tuning are you using?
Thank you! I lucked out in that the key I chose had all the notes of the final arpeggio in natural harmonics. The tuning is just plain old drop D. Good luck with the arrangement :)
awesome, thanks. That's good to know! I'm a fan of keeping pieces in the original keys and keeping standard tuning, but obviously it means I often have to change octaves and I won't get the natural harmonics for sure :(

Hi Josh, I worked from the piano score, but had to transpose to G minor. For the most part I juat leaned out the textures to make it fit on the guitar, but I did have to recompose the accompaniment in the middle section to make it playable. I'll let you know when I publish it!
