UNFINISHED BUSINESS - Running the Eiger E101km Ultratrail by UTMB
The Eiger E101 Ultratrail: A challenge that has been haunting me for quite some years. It’s an ultratrail starting and finishing in Grindelwald, a village in Switzerland most known for its proximity to the 3970m high Eiger peak and is popular among alpinists. The trail is 101km long and covers 6700m of altitude gain.
In 2020 I was signed up but the race was cancelled, in 2021 the E101 wasn’t organized and I ran the E51km. In 2022 I started the E101 but DNF’d due to severe and continuing nausea. This year, in 2023, I was back at training, received an entry slot and was aiming for revenge. Anticipating the completion of this event for the fourth year on end and traveling to Switzerland for the third consecutive year, I was more than ready to complete this ultra, overcome last years’ disappointment and straighten out unfinished business.

Escapardenne Lee Trail (53km): Attempting an FKT
Tucked away in the tiny country of Luxembourg lies the most southern part of The Ardennes; a region of forests, rough terrain, rolling hills and ridges. Between the towns of Ettelbruck and Kautenbach the river Sauer has carved out a maze of steep and horseshoe-shaped valleys. Meandering through these valleys lies the Escapardenne Lee Trail: A 53 kilometer long trail including 2400 meters of alt...
Hiking Peaks of the Balkans - "What can I say? This is Balkan."
In the summer of 2022 two friends hiked a large part of the Peaks of the Balkans Trail: A breathtakingly beautiful hike leading through Kosovo, Montenegro and Albania. The trail is 192 long and has a total of 9600m of altitude gain. We hiked 126km of the trail, skipping most of the trail running through Kosovo due to time restraints. The hike exceeded our expectations, it was utterly beautiful ...
Dutch Wilderness Trail - Winter hiking through 'wild' Holland!
A 4km cinematic short-film hiking through the Dutch Veluwe, Achterhoek and Sallandse Heuvelrug. As we embarked on a 4-day winter-trek through the eastern parts of The Netherlands (AKA Holland), we found some true gems in terms of 'wild' nature (for as far as 'wild' is even possible here...). The hike wasn't particularly tough, nor were the views exceptionally beautiful. There weren't any notabl...
FRILUFTSLIV - Hiking in Sweden's wild and remote Sarek National Park (4k, August 2021)
A beautiful short-film with full 4k quality drone and camera shots made during a 5-day trekking trip through one of Europe's last true wildernesses: Sarek National Park, Sweden. Friluftsliv roughly translates into "outdoor living", and is portrayed as a way of life in Scandinavia. In Sarek National Park it was our way of life as we engaged in a beautiful multi-day hike through the park. 00:00 -...
EIGER ULTRA TRAIL E51km 2021 - What a race!
The video shows my eiger E51km race experience. Due to COVID the 101km was cancelled this year, so I decided to run the 51km! Next year I am scheduled for the 101km though! The subtitles have a few flaws, but I was too tired to change and render the video again: I'm sure they're understandable! All music was purchased from EpidemicSound.

A beautiful film with full 4K quality drone and camera shots made on the epic Scottish Cape Wrath Trail in August 2020. I ran the course of the Devil's Trail in the heart of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. It is 20km long and has about 250m of verticle gain. It is a magnificent course with loads of single-tracks and beautiful surroundings. Want to see and read more about this trail or other trails in The Netherlands? Well done guys. Midges. Nature's little b*stards.
Mooi verslag Christiaan!! Thanks mate!!
I have no words...Just stunning, both the filming and the nature ❤
Awesome guys, well done to you. Great video compilation.
Hi! Supermooie video!
Just beautiful filming. That is so good. When did you habe been there? July?
I'm glad I only do the 51 :D
How was midge situation guys on your trip?
hey! I would love to be able to use some of your images in a new film I am making. how can I get into contact with you? cheers!
Hi! Send me an email to dutchtrailrunning@gmail.com and I'll respond quicker than here, sorry I'm currently travelling 😅
It's weird how when you do these things it's miserable, cold, wet, exhausting, painful etc. Then as soon as you complete it you think "That was great, I wanna do it again!'
I appreciate your tenacity - well done!
Ti seguo!!
My first ultra distance! So fun :)
@@dutchtrailrunning6414 super dank
Amazing video guys! What camera did you use if you dont mind me asking?:)
Hey Ben, thanks for your kind reply! The handheld we used is a Insta360 Go 2 and for a drone we used the DJI Mavic Mini.
Fantastic video guys. I'm heading to this part of the world at the end of June and can't wait. Can I ask did you use paper maps or GPS to navigate the trail? Also what drone do you use to capture this amazing footage?
Hey, thanks for your reply! We bought a Trekking Guide guidebook from Cicerone and used the map from Huber Map. As a back-up we had digital GPS. The drone is a DJI Mavic Mini (1st generation). Good luck planning and have fun!
Nice video (thanks), after seeing your amazing Scotland video. Was wondering, do you think your Lanshan tent would be OK in Scotland? Could it make it through rough weather there? (I have another Chinese tent - Knot and am thinking about 1st half of Cape Wrath Trail).
Hi Danos, thanks for the reply! I would be comfortable taking the Lanshan on the Cape Wrath trek. I think it's personal though: although I have no doubt the tent will hold up in the rough weather it may be less comfortable and specious in the rain than say a 3-season tent from an A-brand and it may feel less secure. If you're fine with that, I would foresee no problems! The tent is stronger than you'd expect ;) Cheers!
Awesome video and footage! thanks
What a beautiful video. Just what I needed to absolutely confirm me to do this hike this summer!! If you would be so kind to answer a couple of questions I would really appreciate it! I feel like I have so many but here are some: 1) I’m planning on doing the full 10 day hike - stopping at the classic 10 stops. I’ve heard there is accommodation at each place? I know you camped each night yourself but did you meet anybody who wasn’t camping? I have no experience with camping and tbh would rather not carry the tent & supplies. 2) did you bother with the border crossing ‘waiver’ ? Is it worth doing so?
Hi, thanks for the complement and reply! Cool that you're doing the trek this summer, especially if you'll do all 190km of it :) To answer your questions: 1) Yes, each stop has several guest house options. Apart from a place to sleep, these also offer dinner and breakfast. Per 'stop' there were several of these, however I cannot say if they were all pre-booked and full. Our experencie was that these are not your typical "Booking.com" accomodations, so I would take the gamble of just going. 2) We bought the bording crossing waiver. We didn't get checked but we would buy them again. Firstly, it's better to come prepared than have your trip ruined by something like this. Secondly, you are a guest in a foreign country where you want to enjoy their nature. They have rules - and even if we might think they're abundant and annoying - so we stick to them, we would expect the same when foreigners visit us. That's our approach anyways, decide for yourself! Enjoy the planning :)
@@dutchtrailrunning6414 thanks so much for the reply. Yh I’m really looking forward to planning it now. I’ve stayed in some pretty 1* places in SE Asia 🤣 so I’ll be happy with whatever the towns have to offer for sure! But at least there’s something there - which is a weight off my mind so thank you! And completely right with point no.2 👏🏻 Planning late May rolling into June 🤞🏻
Great video. Planning this trek this year. What date did you start - seems quiet hot? Did you carry all your food for the whole trip from the beginning, or did you resupply? Where?
Hi, thanks for your reply! We hiked in end of July; it was quite hot indeed. In Tirana it was around 40 degrees and higher up around Theth it was still in the low 30's. Warm but do-able, especially if you adapt your daily schedule. We carried all of our food with us for the trek.
@@dutchtrailrunning6414 thank you!
Keep doing the great work, this world needs more of it !!!
Looks like a great place to hike-your-bike indeed
This looks spectacular, cinematography is simply stunning here. What a breathtaking views my friend!🔥🔥
That was incredible! Thank you so much for sharing its been really insightful
Thanks for your reply. Planning on doing the trail yourself? We can definitely recommend it!
Just discovered this video, well done and really nicely edited
Prachtige beelden
Prachtig! En zeer goede video.
Mooi hoor
Compleet andere weersomstandigheden!
Great video guys. Well done.
This really was an epic. Really enjoyed watching this, subbed. Oh and I loved the sarcasm too.
Great video. I am coming this year. I hope we see some sunshine!
Nice but take the Motor cross next time.
just watched a few minutes, what ye do for food ?
Erg vet!
Great video and content - thanks! Trying the E51 first time next July, was about to do it 2020 too but due to covid postpoed with it two years. looking forward to the challenge!! You're on that E101 this year right? :)
Are you going? See you there!! :-)

Visited there with the RAF in 1985, very outdoorsy pretty, bleak, no chippy, shite weather but a jewel in the crown all the same.
Great film, encapsulates almost all the bittersweet elements to hiking in Scotland, and that most importantly, when chips are down, you simply need to open a beer 🍺
This deserves a lot more views.
Thanks for this! Beautiful. I am planning to photograph at night in these areas and at sites of climate change for a grant (I am from New York). Is there a way to find these locations?
Mooie video weer!
So rad! Glad you managed to get some good weather in the second half!!
Thanks Heather! Yes we were lucky, although we're not sure if we prefere bad weather with no midges or good weather with them...
Mooi man, geniet ervan!
