The Strider race is actually meant to be pvp. There's supposed to be chests hanging kind of like Mario Kart. Also for non racers that are hanging out in the bastion there will be items in there to mess with the racers.
I have no idea what was in my chest monster, the netherite stuff made since since I love looting bastions.
also I spent so much time in that storage system I actually memorized MOST of the chests
