This interesting video/podcast deserves more than the 21 views and 2 likes that it has at time of writing (mid March 2024). Have just read and enjoyed Kate Dylan's Mindwalker on the page rather than as an Audiobook and greatly enjoyed it. I certainly want to explore the sequel Mindbreaker and shall try that in Stephanie's Audiobook version to see how the experience of reading and being read to differs. Mindwalker is set in a future in which, amongst other changes, technology allows one person to link to the mind of another, and temporarily take over directing their body. In the exciting extended climax to the novel, when a character appears we never know if they are being directed by their own mind or someone else's. I liked it even though I very rarely read science fiction. When I bought Mindwalker I did not realise it was classified as 'Young Adult' fiction, and am not sure exactly what that means. However, don't worry if you are not in whatever age bracket Young Adult is aimed at. I am sure I am not, but I still really liked it. I therefore hope booksellers will not ghettoize novels like this by displaying and promoting them in such a way that only a restricted age group are aware of them. I was also interested to hear what it is like to be a professional Audiobook reader and how it affects her own reading habits. So thanks for this podcast/video.

I really did enjoy The Flatshare, and found the writing warm and witty. It's just that I find the recent books, such as The Road Trip, The Switch and No Show are becoming too overtly sexual and explicit, and I became disgusted somewhat. Perhaps Ms O'Leary can retain the wonderful story type of books as her earlier one. Thank you.

His Speaking Volumes has been one of the most interesting and memorable memoirs I've listened to. You learn too so much about the world of audiobooks and narration through his own journey and I join Miriam Margolyes in designating him 'THE voice of the spoken word'. What an enjoyable and informative interview. It's good to have this opportunity to thank Gordon Griffin for the life enhancing audiobooks that I've had so much pleasure in listening to. (Patricia)

Here are my belated questions for Mr Fry: Dear Most Marvelous Myth Mentor: - How old were you when you realized you had grown too tall to fit fully into the bathtub and would no longer be able to enjoy a hot soak on a cold day without some part of you remaining cold-and what effect if any did this milestone have on your emotional development? - How do you personally pronounce the word "forsythia"? - How shall we feel about pied bagpipers going forward (at the height of hurricane season, I might add)? Are we always to regard them with suspicion when the music is just that good? - Who do we think had the easier menopausal transition-Medusa or Pandora? So much love, An appallingly slow Canadian reader

It would be nice for a change if someone said: 'No, I don't have a favourite word.' Excellent point about not dramatizing the reading (18:22). Too many actors are asked to read and then 'act' the text, which ruins it. Dramatised readings of TSEliot, for example, detract from the poetry, which is why, TSEliot himself never did it. Making a joke and then adding 'Joking, of course' (2:30) is not only patronising but ruins the joke. A common enough Americanism adopted now in Britain.

Brilliant work by Holdbrook-Smith - every character is uniquely voiced. Their voices don’t just have the correct accent but timbre, rhythm and essential character traits are conveyed. I’ve listened to all the books so far several times and haven’t noticed any inconsistencies in characters’ voices. In addition, he’s a terrific actor so there’s no need to mentally interpret the words in context to understand the feelings and attitudes of the speaker. Holdbrook-Smith brings every scene to vivid life. Can’t praise too highly, just outstanding!

Right? I don't think anyone's actually started recording all the accents he does yet, and I'm only on Broken Homes so far... but once I've read the books I plan on downloading them all to my Audible then highlighting where accents are mentioned in the books

This interview is too short! I hope more can be published. However, fully agree, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is a fantastic actor, and the books and their characters come to life through his reading. May Ben Aaronovitch be full of great ideas for Peter Grant. Although I would enjoy more from the German characters Tobias Winter and Vanessa Sommer, read by Peter Jackson.

Weirdly enough, I'm going through Fry's mythology books backwards. I started with the brand new (at the time of writing this) Troy, almost done with Heroes. So Mythos will be the next. I'm hoping there will be a full Odysee and Anaeid coming up! With Stephen reading his own books, it's arguably better than the print version. Apart from the fact that I sometimes laughed so hard, I nearly veered off the road while driving! 😲
