Enhancing a Bug Zapper to be more effective against Mosquitoes
Safe to say, we all hate Mosquitoes. For most of us it is an annoying itch for maybe an hour or so. For some people, it is a death sentence if bitten.
I've been in search of an effective means of at least reducing my encounters in the yard. Here is my latest prototype. By no means is this an end design. There are quite a few possible enhancements to try. I'll post updates as results warrant once mosquito season returns. This unit was an untested idea until October of 2024, so I've got lots of things to try and possible improvements to make.
I've attached several Internet links regarding scholarly research into Mosquito abatement. Several of these I used in designing this device:

A Few Notes On Winding Yard String Trimmer Line

    Fun fact to avoid "losing your religion"! The bolt that's hards to see can be easily removed in 2 steps. 1.The hose directly above it is held with a c clamp. It can be moved out of the way with just a little pressure and snaps back in. 2. Get an impact with an extension And voila! Your faith stays intact!

      Actually,No. Yes, I checked. The Chinese units are both less expensive and more reliable. I’ve replaced a lot of the domestically sourced units. I’ve never had a Chinese unit fail. The domestic units use a slide switch. They rust.

    Another hack is cleaning the black rubber gasket from debris that can get in. The other problem is the gasket on the bottom of the large cylinder. It gets fouled and can start leaking. Kohler sells that. Rust deposits or minerals in the water can be the culprits.

    Why not use De-oxit instead of WD40? It’s made specifically for cleaning/protecting contact surfaces.

    • @EdHumble

      More a matter of past association and availability. It indeed might work and even work better, but this is the first I’ve heard of it.

    • @EdHumble
      @EdHumble หลายเดือนก่อน

      Short answer: Deoxit is a very good product designed specifically for this application. It would work superbly in this application. I see a few draw backs making this a pure judgement vs total cost decision: WD-40 has the flexible straw container. This makes treatment mush easier to avoid any unnecessary disassembly. The plastic straws or paint type sprays are not as effective. Deoxit is three times the cost per unit volume. Around here, only the Guitar Center stocks it. Everywhere else it is available to order. Wal-Mart will be glad to order it for you. If you just want contact cleaner, everybody that sells electrical carries that in several brands.

    This video is as straight forward as you can get. Thank you sir! I have calibrated hundreds of complex scales for seed research combines over the last 10 years but I was totally lost when my little 20 dollar bathroom scale needed it. Other videos on "how to calibrate" these analog scales were all just people moving the dial to 0 and stepping on it.haha You actually took them apart and gave very detailed explanations of the parts, best tools to use, HOW TO CALIBRATE and helpful tips to avoid the frustration of trying to piece it all back together. I didn't watch past the first scale cause I already learned what I needed. Although it doesn't show you physically calibrating the scale, it still explains the whole process step by step and then some. Some people are visual learners only I suppose but I wanted to let you know that out of the 10 or so videos I watched yours is the only that has useful information and actually relates to calibration. This is the exact video I was looking for so thank you sir!

    Standing on a step ladder and stepping into a bag of leaves is going to cause a person to fall soon than later. This not a wise way to compress the leaves. As some one else said, at age 75 which is my age too, using s step ladder and standing on the bag is not for me. Pushing the leaves down with gloved hands works well enough followed by folding over the top of the paper bags and then sitting on top of it. Much safer. I usually take a short break sitting on the bag after filling each one! I use a hand-held blower/vacuum to pick up the leaves and put them into a large wheeled plastic garbage container using a Worx hose system with cloth cover for the garbage can. That works very well to pick up, mulch and compress the leaves but does take quite a bit of time unless I blow the leaves into large piles first. It is not the ultimate solution as pulling Garbage Can behind me is a bit of a chore. Then I carefully dump the leaves out of the plastic garbage can into the lawn bags using a plastic cardboard type of insert or an expandable cloth type insert. There is some spillage but I can pick that up with the hand-held vacuum after filling each bag. Due to the weight of the compressed mulched leaves I only fill the bag to 3/4 full. I am going to try a Troy Bilt chipper shredder vacuum next year after using a blower to blow the leaves out of the flower beds and away from trees and fences. Not cheap to do as the Troy Bilt costs about $1,000.. After that I may just hire someone as I age out.
