Top 5 Books for Getting into Science Fiction
Just completed the first chapter
I read Elantris right after finishing Mistborn Era 1, and I don’t even know how to put into words how it made me feel. The closest I can get is “unique.” It was so distinct, so unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before. I CANT WAIT FOR ELANTRIS 2!
I really loved the movies…especially part 2. I also fell in love with the board game. I have never been a big book reader but I’m 35 now and had the sudden urge to start reading books. Since I love Dune movies and the lore from the board game, I wanted to learn more about the universe of dune so I decided to pick up the first book at my local bookstore and I’m 50 pages in and I’m loving it. Already noticing differences between the movies and the book is very interesting to me. Cant wait to finish it!
Good list. This is pretty much the way I started. MB Era1, Warbreaker, Elantris, Hope of Elantris, Emperor's Soul. Now I'm leaning towards starting WoK next. Been a bit intimidated by the scale of SLA, but I think it's finally time. I will probably jump back and forth with SLA/MB Era2 to break up the beast that is SLA.
I also just finished it, I loved it too.
Have I missed something? Mistborn 1 Mistborn 2 Mistborn 3 Arcanum Unbounded - 11th metal Arcanum Unbounded Mistborn Secret History Warbreaker (there will be a sequel but right now it is a stand alone novel) Elantris Arcanum Unbounded - The Hope of Elantris Arcanum Unbounded - The Emperor Soul White Sand Arcanum Unbounded - Shadow’s for silence Arcanum Unbounded - Sixth of the Dusk Stormlight archive 1 Stormlight archive 2 Arcanum Unbounded - Edgedancer Stormlight archive 3 Dawnshard Stormlight archive 4 Stormlight archive 5 Mistborn 4 Arcanum Unbounded - Allomancer Jak Mistborn 5 Mistborn 6 Mistborn 7
Unfortunately I had to DNF it after book 1. It just wasn't for me. I didn't like any of the characters and I found reasons to put it down after just a few pages at a time. I admire those who can stick with it but it just bored me.
I love your reviews and perspective! I first found you when you reviewed your top 3 sci-fi books and was so excited to see we the same favorites (the only one I haven’t read The Left Handed Darkness but it’s on my read list) and similar thoughts on sci-fi! I just finished God Emperor of Dune, so I’d love if at some point you reviewed each book a little more in depth because I’m interested in what you think! I’m excited to see more from you!
At 24 I only just started getting into reading years ago, it’s great you already have these reflections about your reading journey about what you like (and don’t like). I’m sure many more good books are to come! I’ve been enjoying your reviews so far, even if the books are a bit outside my wheelhouse. A McCarthy jumping point you may like is Fernanda Melchor’s novels!
I just picked this one up and it is going near the top of my TBR because everyone has raved about it! Cant wait to dive into it!
Been meaning to get to this one! I love thought provoking books so I’ll definitely check it out (I also like controversial authors and seeing what makes them controversial as well as making my own opinion 😊)
trying to get into reading again after a painfully stressing exam that I took. And I discovered ur channel it kinda gets me motivated bro. Keep up the good work!
I've got 2 more chapters to finish then done with this. Definitely not going to be a favorite of mine, as I found it a complete slog. The sense of time progression and flow are awful. Most of the book is talking heads. The perspective of characters is almost non-existent except for Gurney's moment where he sees Paul for the first time in two years. Important events are mentioned as if in passing with very little if any detail given. Certain chapters like the formal dinner and Kynes' final chapter are mind-numbingly boring. I'm sorry but how did this book ever become a classic? The writing is amazingly poor. Contemporary authors like Brandon Sanderson are a thousand times better. Sorry for the downer summary but I've been so frustrated with this book ever since I picked it up and was wondering if anyone else found it to be as frustrating.
Nah, just you 😂. It seems you’re more into fun books than books that’ll make you think, hence the “boring” comments. It became a classic because it touches upon humanity, several aspects of it. It’s ok to not like the book, it’s not ok to discredit it because you didn’t like it.
@@nenyeo6090 No no, it's not that at all. I'm into good _storytelling._ Good worldbuilding isn't enough. As a writer myself, I would never be able to get away with what Dune has done. I don't think Dune would have been successful if published today. Talking heads is not a good technique. Also, one of the primary tenets of writing (show, don't tell) is not just a quip. It's actually important. I did finish the book finally and I'm glad it's over. Paul's son is killed and we never even met him. That's very dumb. Thankfully, we did get a bit of choreography in Paul's fight with Feyd. But just barely. The final battle where the Fremen storm the Emperor's position is only given from the perspective of the people on the receiving end. So much is missing. It's definitely not about "fun". Go study storytelling and you'll see how much is missing here.
Bro can you tell me a dark fantasy book plz
dude idk why u keep saying Dune, u obviously read ENUD
this review was done so well and considerate for those who love the series! i agree that this series has romance as its main plot that is just living in a fantasy world. sarah j maas is my favourite author and this is probably one of my least favourite books by her. you should give her throne of glass series a try! its my favourite series by sarah and is more focused on the world building with romance as a subplot. however, she wrote it when she was 16 and it definitely shows in the first 2 books but the characters and the world are amazing
- The Dispossessed - The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories - Cloud Atlas
I think the omission of Leto II was sort of replaced by Feyd destroying Sietch Tabr. Although Paul didn’t literally lose any of his biological family, the people of the Sietch were arguably like a surrogate family to him, so it is still a loss to him. It also served as a catalyst to make him decide to take the Water of Life (since the book explanation of why he did so was also omitted).
I think he did wondorful job at portraying women. The book starts and ends with the conversation between two women who passed the torch to the other. Women are crazy strong with their bodies, sharp mind and wise, but still are feminine in their nature. I love seeing that Paul was surrounded by strong female presence that made him who he is and the other hand, Feyd-Rautha had no strong women in his life and that caused many of his problems. Some of the most important decision were made by women and this shows who really has the control.
These sound like great choices although the only one I've read is Frankenstein (in fact, I wrote a chapter in my dissertation about it), but I've heard good things about the others. For my recommendations, I would list two of my favorite authors, Ursula LeGuin and Octavia Butler. (For LeGuin, both Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed are classics; I love Butler's Xenogenesis trilogy.) Also, my favorite subgenre in sci-fi is alternative history. In that subgenre, two stand out: Philip K. Dick's The Man in the High Castle (Germany and Japan won WWII--most of the novel takes place in 1960s San Francisco which is like a Japanese puppet state) and Years of Rice and Salt by Kim Stanley Robinson (about 95% of Europeans die from Bubonic Plague around 1300--the rest of the novel reimagines the history of the world without Europe).
I’ve never really gravitated towards sci fi literature. My go to is crime, psychological thrillers. Would you have any recommendations for sci-fi newbies? Maybe a more grounded book?
100%, this is a great question. Will have a video out on it soon
Ooohhh might need to add this to the TBR. Always struggle with SciFi series. The concepts, always fun. The execution of... less so. But when done right..🤯. Sounds like this will be good 😊
The quick answer is yes lol
Super cool! But can I get your skincare and gym routine? I think it will enhance my reading.
lmao
I watched the movie and i was shocked how much it moved me. Wasn't sure wether i want to read the book, but now i definitely will. Thank you for your video. I've noticed that usually i read whatever i want, but when it comes to sci-fi, i need a little encouragement😊 love your channel
Thank you and enjoy the book!
Ive had this on my TBR for a long time, Im excited to get to it soon! I decided to separate it from Roadside Picnic by a little distance, as I've heard they have some similarities
I just bought the trilogy this week!
Too late dude, I already read it! 🤪
I’ve seen the cover of book 1 everywhere but haven’t heard people on booktuber talk about it! Isn’t there a movie based on this as well? Anyways, I added it to my TBR!
Book 1 is particularly excellent! There is a movie, which is also good, but it’s markedly different from the book.
Is Dune okay for new sci-fy readers?
Wow.. so this is really not for me 😂 thanks!
I’m watching this video looking through a mirror… so my reality feels normal. (Cos all your vids are flipped/mirrored) hehe Jokin. Love your reviews mate. I need some more ideas.
i love your outfits AND now i find out you also do book reviews?!? perfection ☺️
SPOILER: The biggest change for me was i could not get over Alia not being there physically. I do understand the difficulty of it as that would entail a time jump, but in a sense they still did incorporate a minor time jump although it was more palatable. By voicing that qualm I think I am most upset that Denis just lost the “weirdness” that is Dune. Like Dune is just so freaking weird sometimes and we see that in the Harkonnens but we didn’t see it enough in Paul. Like Paul and Alia both went through Radiohead “im a freak… I’m a weirdo” moments.
I disagree, because what we got was *much* weirder in my opinion; Jessica was speaking to a sentient fetus for chunks of the film and at one point, Paul can ever hear her speak. What I like about his adaptations are that he keeps the spirit of Dune's bizarreness, but executes it all in a grounded way, so it feels natural within that world.
@@paul1720 yeah i did like the way he changed it in that way, still felt as though it if he continues on with the series I’m not sure how he will fare as they get stranger and i think he made it more palatable so idk how he’s gonna do Messiah and consequentially children of dune
Read the book you want to read. Read everything, discard what you don't like, keep what you do.
Have you read Babel by R.F. Kuang? Im reading it now and id definitely recommend it!
Ask someone who never read the book what a mentat is. Their answer is all you need to know in terms of how "faithful" and adaptation these movies are.
I disagree on this point, I think the function of a film adaptation is to communicate the overall story and some of the themes of the book. A 1:1 reproduction wouldn’t work because they’re strikingly different mediums. “Faithful”, to me, is more about the spirit of the story than its details.
SPOILER: Very minor change but I thought it was interesting they got rid of Harah. Makes me think there's going to be more changes RE the plot with the kids in the next movie as well. Paul having to take on Harah and her son is a subtle but important piece of him falling in love with/getting sucked into the Freman ways and temporarily shifting focus away from his 'destiny'. Great vid!
That’s definitely an important change!
I hope that in next Movie Dune "Messiah" they will show creepy Alia as a child)
BOOKS Spoiler: Don't worry about Leto II. Movie adaptation skips the first baby of Paul and Channi which is killed by the Harkonens, but Leto and Ganima appear in the second book Dune Messiah so they should appear in the 3rd movie. Unless Villeneuce decides otherwise.
I think they may skip Leto II The Elder
Thank you for the recommendations! If you like cosmic horror, check out The Justice of Kings, by Richard Swan. The trilogy is now complete, and it mixes cosmic horror with traditional/medieval fantasy.
Movie was amazing! My only criticism is, where's the Spacing Guild?
They will most likely play a big part in Dune Messiah, due to a certain character. To be honest this movie didn't need them in it. Their little teaser appearance in Dune 1 was cool.
@@keelan3332agreed, I think their exclusion made the 2nd film more streamlined
I think they worked great in the book but for the movie I feel like they’ll work better as an entity in the 3rd film
I don’t recommend Dune to people with a weak mentality because it really hard to process everything in the book
This is my third time reading ᑐ ᑌ ᑎ ᕮ
I was worried it would be overhyped for me, because I didn’t love the first part. This movie blew me away on every level! It is a spectacle of effects, it is was enthralling with its story and characters, and developed this world even more. A masterclass in sci-fi filmmaking. I was floored. It also flew by for me as well, it was paced to near perfection. Great review! Keep making videos 👍
i loved the movies so much tht i’m currently reading Dune! funnily enough, i think seeing the movies first is helping me move through tht initial confusing stage where Herbert just throws you into the “lore” of the world. i’m just enamoured with his writing & all of the spiritual wisdom tht characters just casually drop in dialogue lol. my favorite thing about the story itself is tht it’s such a cautionary tale & it still applies all these years later. seeing Paul go down the path he does reminds me to keep my own morals in check lol. & it’s just a damn good story. pls keep making more Dune content & telling us what you love abt it!
Definitely can see that seeing the movies first would help to get past the initial world building in the book!
What you said about more Islamic and Arabic actors -> I 100% agree. I hope that for Dune Messiah they will really go out and look for talented and up and coming actors of that background especially since we'll have many more factions introduced/expanded upon (Tlailaxu, Spacing Guild, more Bene Gesserit involvement, maybe even planets shown if they do a Jihad montage)
Agreed, very good opportunity to improve on that!
Javier Bardem stole the show. Nice review!
hey do you have a letterboxd account?
Indeed, @treedfl
I gotta disagree. I love Sando, but I think the best fantasy series is Malazan Book of the Fallen, though Stormlight is high up on the list.
