You're making Thanksgiving with mashed potatoes but no gravy sound dramatic and I love it. This is a very touching way to portray the reality of grief: we may think we're not that significant, but our absence will be felt through an event without our best dish, through clothes untouched that were ours.

North America tends to do thanksgiving dinner in a family gathering, right? It's honestly really sad when someone from the family gathering that was the BEST at doing their part in the celebration disappears. Whether that's passing away with age, or just being so consistently absent in family events that their place is forgotten - it leaves a kind of hole, I think. A hole where somebody should've been. Even if nobody else seems to care, there always remains an empty hole that never seems to get filled the same way twice. I think I can relate to that.

In your community tab, you stated this album would be mostly about an Aromantic woman and her struggles living in an amatonormative society. So when this song was teased, I suspected it might be about Gail's dread regarding being trapped as a housewife in a relationship she doesn't want. Instead, it seems like it's a song about grief, and how Thanksgiving in particular is a time that can bring those feelings up. With the fact that Thanksgiving is usually a time for family, and it mentions how the absent person's clothes have been placed in Gail's closet, a part of me is willing to wonder if the person who left (likely passed, since their absence is so strongly highlighted. their phone number is no longer in service, and they're treated like they're gone forever) was a sibling or some other family member. Now, how would this tie into the theme of the album? The way Gail is treated by her family. Apparently, the absence of this person isn't "a big enough deal" to justify her sadness. If this society really is romance-obsessed and cult-like, it'd make sense if her feelings were disregarded because this person was anybody BUT a romantic partner. Because they weren't in romantic love, the connection clearly didn't matter, so why the hell is she so distraught about it? Another thing I considered, though it's a bit more complicated, is that this absent person (we'll say sibling, hypothetically) isn't dead at all. They're very alive, but recently got married. And in a society as obsessed with romance as this one, that could easily mean moving out and almost completely disconnecting from your family to focus on the relationship. Not answering calls. Not showing up at gatherings anymore as you build a family of your own. Regardless of the specifics, the base theme is evident. Someone is gone, and it's taboo for Gail to care about it so much.

Really interesting, thank you for this short!! I myself am not aromantic but I noticed how much our society focuses on romance while other types of relationships are not as often appreciated in songs as romance (with lust oft added into it as well). While I don't mind these songs at all and I enjoy a lot of them, I can see how it can be frustrating for someone like you or even people who aren't aromantic who are going through a similar situation!
