Penland School Of Craft 2024 - Wardrobe Design/Build Class
Last month, we taught a two-week class at Penland School of Craft titled "Wardrobe Design/Build," where we guided students of all skill levels to create well-fitting garments with personalized design elements using our sewing patterns. In the supportive and inspiring setting of Penland, students engaged in hands-on learning and shared ideas, enriching their sewing practice. Founded in 1929 by Lucy Morgan, Penland has a rich history in promoting traditional Appalachian crafts and has evolved into a hub for creativity and craftsmanship, offering immersive workshops across various disciplines. Our class was designed not only to teach patterns but also to empower students by instilling confidence in their ability to design for themselves. Despite our initial concerns about teaching experienced sewists, our industry expertise allowed us to offer valuable new techniques and insights. We prioritized creative practice, encouraging students to think beyond just making clothing and reflect on their values and future sewing endeavors. Our syllabus included readings and discussions on sustainability and the retail industry, fostering deeper reflection. The course included several patterns, allowing students to personalize designs and test muslins for a perfect fit. We also offered a "bonus" Hip Pack pattern, taught by our co-founder Leigh. Toward the end of the session, students shared their creations and celebrated their hard work in a communal showcase, culminating in an auction for scholarship funds. This experience highlighted the power of sewing as a personal creative act, and we hope to continue creating environments where individuals can gain confidence in their ideas and skills.

Preparing and Cutting Fabric for Sewing
amazing! thank you so much, your work is helping the environment <3
Is the lengthen the Nancy Zoeman method. So easy. Thank you
I was literally on Penland's website last night looking up letterpress workshops when I saw this class and thought how great it would have been. And now this video pops up on TH-cam! Clearly I need to pay closer attention to the workshop offerings so I don't miss out on amazing opportunities like this! Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely! It's a wonderful place to learn and teach. We hope to be back soon!
cool! what song ?
Very nice, thank you ❤
Super helpful, thanks so much!
It’s a lot easier than i thought. Thank you for the video!❤
Ok this is a really cute bootie pattern but the music is very annoying
Quite
If you want to add grip/non skip fabric, do you just cut it with pattern foot section?
And where is the Pattern? Please♥️
So essentially all these buttons are the same? you’re just using a machine in the industrial scenario vs hammer and a backing plate. Are these the only two methods? I’m just learning about making clothing. Thank you
Beautiful construction
I can't wait to make these, they're so cute! They look like Robin Hood boots!
Do you have a suggestion for an alternative if you don’t have a serger quite yet? 🥹
We are trying to concentrate on your fabulous instruction. Pls kill the music. Many thanks
Very informative. Thank you.
This looks very precise and professional, I will certainly try on the next project that lends itself to this method.
Thanks!! 17:50
I love this and will try it next time I have facings to do! Thank you for sharing
A good instructional video. Thank you.
Thank you for this!!!! I have been looking for tidy ways to finish the facings for an eternity!
Wow! This was such a great series thank you! Everything was explained and shown so clearly. Also jealous of the industrial button hole maker😉 Looking forward to sewing this pattern
Hi, you mentioned showing how to shorten your zipper, but I can't find where you actually do that. Can you point me to where I would find those instructions? Thanks!
Hi Judy, in chapter 4 of this sew along they show how to shorten the zipper. It’s about 4 minutes in
Good job.....thanks
WOW! Thanks! Where did you purchase the backing or whole button too and backing? Please!
Keep shining as brightly as you do!! Promotion that works > *Promo sm*!!!
Where is everyone? Where is the applause? This was beautifully done and simple to follow. Thank you!
Yes!! I’m adding fullness to a skirt fr the first time and your instructions left me feeling confident that I can do it…so we’ll done and easy to understand. Thank you!!!
Adding an underarm gusset would be cool
Handy video! I do wish there was more information on button/buttonhole placement though.
Thank you! We'll trying to add a section on button placement.
Thank you so much for this amazing video. Seriously so helpful. There's just one little error, I think - wanted to point out for anyone else. on step 22 in the instructions, in the video you say Left front pant, but should be right (and says right in the PDF). Confused me for a second! Thank you so much again for your fab instructional videos.
I love your accent!! Also thank you so much - these videos are amazing. Can't wait to sew this one and look fwd to your future patterns too.
Thanks so much for the kind words! My accent has gotten so much less over the years, but I am glad I still have it a bit :) Cant wait to hear what you make!
thanks and is there going to be sew along for gable shirt? :)
Yes working on it now!! Should be up here in the next week or so. Make sure you're signed up for newsletter, and you will get that alert.
This is the best sew along I've ever seen. I watched the whole thing and I haven't even bought the pattern yet. I learned a lot about pants construction, what bits to serge, etc. Really clear, well-paced and helpful, thanks!
Thanks so much for the kind words! We really hope that they are helpful and will be adding more sewing videos all the time.

Love that yellow splattered fabric!😍
It's so good!
It’s zipper time 😂😂😂
So very jealous of the industrial buttonhole and setter machines!
I know, right! You can really bust out some holes with that machine.
