This is a short session on the Mid-Ohio club course. The car was a real joy to drive all weekend. It feels like it's 'my' car now, and not something I'm still unfamiliar with
Big crash at Autobahn Country Club South Course

Here's my accident from September 10th, 2017. It's really something, as you'll see. A brief explanation of what happens: I hit the dirt coming out of turn 5, the car spun, went across the track, hit the tire wall and then rolled twice. As for WHY that happened, I made several mistakes. You can see in the corners before the crash that I was struggling with grip. The track had slowed down, but I ...

This was my last session on Autobahn South for the weekend. The track had gotten a little greasy, and I was overdriving. So no records were set here, but I had a good time nonetheless. I still have a problem with hitting apexes too early. It is seriously my worst habit behind the wheel. Also, yes, I talk to my car.
Pitt Race Crash 6-4-2017
มุมมอง 10K7 ปีที่แล้ว
I had an accident at turn 16 on the Piutt Race Full Track. Here's my analysis of what went wrong. Turn 16 is a fast right-hand kink, which allows for very little time to settle the car for braking hard into 17. I usually took 16 flat, at 110-115mph. On this lap, I was catching a TTU Mustang in front of me. I expected him to pull away on the straight much more than he did, and I definitely did n...

This was my best lap for the day. As is usually the case, my best lap still contained a couple big mistakes. Maybe some day I'll string a whole lap together. Harry's Lap Timer was in a rare state today. Go ahead and try to follow that track map. Anyway, Putt Race is fantastic. I love it. Constant elevation and direction changes. High-G at all times.

This is a Saturday warmup session at Road America. It's a pretty good example of an HPDE4/TT warmup, since there's a lot of traffic and everybody is playing together pretty nicely. Being a warmup, you can see some mistakes I make in there. None were a big deal, and it was clear from the first couple laps that I was already faster than the last time I was at RA.

I crashed on my first lap of the second session on Saturday. I can see I hit the corner before it early, which put me into the curb pretty hard. I was trying too hard, too early, on a green track. Live and learn. The whole right side of the car is dented, I lost a mirror and the right-side inner tie rod was bent 90 degrees. The car had to be towed back to the paddock and I had a ride in an ambu...

左フロントタイヤが縁石に乗り過ぎましたね。少しの事でクラッシュするんですね。
Ahhh that’ll buff out
I don't know what the interior of this car but I hear the rotary. Rx8?
Yes. It was an RX8.
One of the things that was hammered into us was: "If you drop a tire off the edge of the track, do NOT try and 'pull it back' on because it'll spin for sure." I tested that advice once... and it proved to be correct.
You're absolutely right. Later on, I started having HPDE students drop two or even four wheels off the track in a corner where it was relatively safe to, just so they experienced it in a controlled manner.
You drop a wheel off with any kind of side load on and you’re going to hook.
Spot on analysis. Glad you’re okay. That always stinks having to lift and brake due to unpredictable slowing traffic. If I even lifted a little in a turn with my Lotus, immediate snap spin. Thank goodness I never connected with the tire barrier.
Looks like loss of control over trying to slow down mid corner to avoid the slowing car in front. Bummer. But why is the car so unforgiving, it should have been no more than a sideways moment.
Watching this saying to myself "stay off the curbs, dont touch the curbs" 😬
I learned to ride curbs, when appropriate, much better eventually. Though you're right, there are some at Road America you want to stay off. I've heard stories of the gators on the runoff at turn 5 setting off airbags.
You can't park there.
You were going fairly well until you ran out of talent. It was very brave of you to post this. Great reminder to others to not chase after faster drivers.
@@Formaldehydex it wasn’t really about…chasing faster drivers, though. I beat myself that day, competing in TT, not being consistent. I got another car, learned a lot, went much faster, and won frequently without drama.
@@owensnicholas So you are “competing” without any of the essential safety equipment? How outrageously stupid…
@@owensnicholasBTW you nearly lost control on the preceding corner as well. You were clearly driving way over your ability level.
@@Formaldehydex I mean, are you just here to tell me I suck? Cool, message received. I gave a pretty clear explanation in the description. I made big mistakes and I learned from them. I shared it so others can, too.
Speaking of talent, why don't you take some time and improve your ability to talk to strangers. The amount of straight up rude behavior in these amateur racing videos is ridiculous.
Man you barely touched the dirt and it got away from you. Speedy recovery get back out there.
@@immunity4soul oh, this was years ago. I bought a caged RX8 after this car and had a ton of fun in NASA TT.
@@owensnicholas glad to hear you back out there. I am looking to go out to autobahn for some track time. Picked ip an 86. It looked like the rear end washed out on you when you were on the rumble strip. You got on the throttle before the apex and pushed all the way to the edge of that rumble and you got crossed up. Part of the game, rx8 is a great chassis to work with. Keep it up.
Your analysis is pretty much spot on. Instead of braking mid corner, your option was to simply steer around the slower car. I had a similar incident at Mosport (Canadian Tire Motorsport Park) driving a McLaren 650S and found myself approaching a slower Porsche Turbo at a high rate of speed. All I did was steer around the slower car - (here is a video th-cam.com/video/hkJfngvGTEM/w-d-xo.html of the drive and the incident happens at 1:47) There are often more options than simply braking. (the 650S belonged to McLaren Cars and I was doing some testing for them at a track day).
Thanks for your input. The corner immediately following the kink is tight and greater than 90deg. I see what you mean about the similarities, but you had a corner with some margin. I didn’t, because I didn’t leave myself any and the corner is very tight.
There is a racetrack called Autobahn? 😂😂😂
@@ingocernohorsky yes. Autobahn Country Club is in Joliet, IL. It wasn’t my favorite track to visit, even before I destroyed a car there.
Boring why would we want to watch a car crawling around a track and falling off?
@@johncowie3092 and yet you watched and commented.
How fast was the car going, @johncowie3092? How fast are you normally going through there?
now how you gonna get home?
Right? I did have to be towed from that track once, when I had some wires melt on the exhaust. But I had a tow vehicle and trailer by this point.
@@owensnicholas do you still run the track? thinking of coming out there with my new to me car.
@@c.j2527 I do not, sadly. I sold the race car and moved to the mountains. If you want to get out on track, and you’re in the Midwest, check out NASA. Best instruction out there.
What kind of lap times were you putting down before this happened?
Man, I don’t know. It was six years ago. I could probably look up the results from that event, but it would take a while. I admit I wasn’t actually very fast yet. I had a lot to learn, and went much, much faster more safely later on in a different RX8.
stupid grass
I do think that corner should have a paved runoff on the outside. But the big dip was something I never should have hit to begin with. I should have seen it when I walked the track, and I shouldn't have hit the apex before that so early. I did all of that myself.
@@owensnicholas at least you have a cool story to tell AND didn't harm yourself (as far as I can tell) =)
Thanks for sharing. To me, this looked like a classic case of lift off oversteer in a front wheel drive car.
This was not a front wheel drive car.
I nearly spun out on that same corner. Thats when someome tolde its a common corner which makes sense. You're tires are hot and overworked by the end of those 2 turns off your not careful
Did you have a roll bar? If so, how well did it do?
The car had a very nice roll bar in it. I have little doubt that it saved me from injury, especially since my seat broke in that crash.
Glad you're ok. It was easy to tell you were going to crash, before you did. You have to notice the signs and back off, give yourself and your car time to cool off.
Thanks for the comment. You're absolutely right. I learned a lot from that crash, and the one before it. I wish I didn't need such expensive lessons, but there we have it.
@@owensnicholas that's life my man, live to fight another day. Stay safe.
Old set of rear tires, for sure - decent recovery - never as much grip in the grass as you want
"Well, you're done." 😅
And it was.
Seems like the car in front of you stopped! Wth happened there?
The lesson I learned here is to be cautious around people I don't know. This event combined a couple of NASA regions, so there were drivers I didn't know. Yes, that driver went through that corner way slower than I would have expected. But I should have been prepared for it. I was competing, so backing off in case that driver did something unexpected wasn't my first priority. As I said, lesson learned. Thanks for the question and stay safe. :)
Thank God you didn’t get hurt and you lived to learn from it!
Glad to see you came out with only some dirty shorts!!!
is the dp on a cool down?
Oh no. Even worse. This was a warm-up lap. I learned a valuable lesson that day.
sorry but have to laugh at that comment when your upside down. ".....well your done" Glad your okay. Those curbs are brutal. I counter steer whenever touching them because they just send you sideways. Not sure why they chose those types of curbing for T5/10
i like the 5 mirror setup
I count seven!
That was a waste of 30 seconds of my life.
And then you wasted even more commenting.
Now everyone knows your an a hole. If you were any kind of driver you'd know that you can learn something from anything.
"Well you're done" xD Sorry to see the crash, it really sucks for that to happen on a track day.
Yeah, I got frustrated in the heat of competition. Live and learn, and thankfully I was able to get back on track with another car. Thanks for the comment. :)
Thanks for posting with the description.
What a gift it is to us less experienced drivers that you are willing to post these crashes. I deeply appreciate it. I hope I'm as honorable as you are if I dent mine. Also - if we're ever at Road America together let me buy you a beverage of choice to thank you for posting the turn 13 crash. I take that turn like it's impossible to spin there and I'll definitely be thinking of you the next time I'm through there!
Thank you for the kind words, Alex. I hadn't actually seen this video in a few years, so thank you for the walk down memory lane. I became a MUCH better driver in the couple years that followed...until the pandemic hit and I skipped all last season. I'd be happy to share some stories over a drink some day. I love Road America so much. I hope that I get to go back there soon.
You need to slow down your hands at turn-in. Your turn -in looks like a correction for a skid. Fast and smooth.
the little whoop-de-do got you after the apex. Your line looked great to me. You needed to catch the spin a hair sooner. Good drive.
Wow. Got through Canada just fine. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a spin at that corner...I’m not a pro, but the video looked like you were in good shape. So, surprise to me...and you. Glad the damage was minor. Thanks for sharing.
I made a very rookie mistake of hitting the corner early, trying to go faster. It's very common, and now I spend a lot of time right-seat, trying to help others avoid doing the same thing. :)
Paul Tracy had a big off there in a Champ Car there around 2004. Spun to the right, just like this gentleman, and hit the tire barrier in front of the old bleachers by 14 hard.
Mark Patterson Thanks. I have a new appreciation for what can go wrong at that turn!
Seen lots of spins at 13 through the years. This is a very common mistake, the other is trying to get a big run into 14 and dropping a wheel off on exit of 13. Point is, I think anyone could make this mistake. I try to keep it off the curb on the apex here.
@@keegles1 Just got back from Road America a week ago. I took the curb on 13 and then used some of the access road on exit. Learned I need to hurry back left for entry into turn 14. I have seen more offs on turn 14 than 13.
Any chance you remember how the car was configured at this time? What tires and mods? I'm running a pretty stock 04 RX-8 with 200TW tires and trying to get a sense of a realistic goal for lap times.
The car was on R888Rs. It had coilovers and...that’s largely it. Actually, my channel has another video of what happened to me the next day in that car. I’ve done a 2:01.0 in my current RX8 on R7s, but it’s been a year and a half since I last went to Pitt. I’ve learned a ton. I’ll be much faster next time I go. Have a great time. Pitt is an excellent track. But be careful!
Thanks, I've been there several times and it's a blast. I've seen your crash video before, it's the primary reason my butt puckers as I roll through the kink. I ran last year on Koni yellows and crappy Indy 500s, not much else so i feel like I'm not far off. Just finished putting in RB springs and sway bars and got better tires coming. Maybe someday I'll convince my wife to let me gut her and setup like a NASA TT5 car. Appreciate the response! th-cam.com/video/O1O34dm8H2c/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for posting and a great lesson. I hate 16. I have a big heavy car and it is a bit tricky getting through 16 right to set up for 17. Most of the time I am very conservative because it's the only place on the track I have puckered myself. I will be extra careful when there is traffic after seeing this.
Man that cage saved your ass!
Wow 😮 thx for posting this. Glad you were ok!
I instruct for NASA Great Lakes. I felt strongly that I had to share it so more could learn from my mistakes. Actually, I should edit my description on the video to better explain what happened, instead of making excuses about 'trying too hard.' Description edited to make with the learning and the sharing.
OH GEEZ THIS ONE IS SO MUCH WORSE
What caused the car to get unsettled on the curb?
I think I made the same mistake that can be seen in my roll at Autobahn, roughly a year and a half later. I hit the apex early, tried to cut the corner, and had too much steering angle to try to force the car to turn. This has been a difficult and expensive habit for me to change. In both cases, the car oversteered and went backwards into the inside wall. In this case, it wasn't so bad. In the other, I destroyed the car.
@@owensnicholas Glad you are ok
There's a little bump right at the apex of 13 so I try to avoid getting too close to the curbs there. Good save, hopefully damage was minimal
@@owensnicholas Its hard to see for sure but it looks like you were on cold tires, but more importantly it looks like there was no counter-steer early into the slide. It looked like the nose was still moving/pointing left when the rear was moving right.
@@dc5769 there's so much to unpack in this one crash. I was inexperienced and over-eager. I didn't know how to build speed safely. Thanks for your comment. :)
The guy in the e46 m3 also crashed there. Everyone makes an early apex there and goes wide
We had three car-destroying accidents in the same corner that weekend. I do wish ABCC would put some paved runoff or a big gator there.
No need to be out that far. If you are, you turned in to early for S5…
Fpv quadcopter racing is much safer and cheaper to fix.

I’m sorry about your car, but glad your alive. Before I buy any other pointless mod or tweak my car I’m getting a roll bar. Who installed yours?
A local shop called Scram Speed built it from scratch. They did a fabulous job and built it way, way beyond minimum requirements. www.scramspeed.com/
Thanks for posting. Huge lesson here, for everyone. You're obviously nailing it to the wall, but then, oh sh#t! Summit Point going through the Chute, same situation except going left into T5.

Been there but I chose to hit the car. I didn't. Amazing how good ABS is! Years ago there was a similar accident at 16 at just about every event. Not so much anymore but it still happens.
