Ultralight Backpack KS40 Impressions
มุมมอง 3.2K6 ปีที่แล้ว
I took my KS Ultralight KS40 backpack for a ride through the Eagles Nest Wilderness. Here are my first impressions of the pack after a few overnights with it. Feel free to let me know what you think of the video. I hope to grow this channel and improve my recording and editing. Here is a link to KS Ultralight: www.ks-ultralightgear.com
Thanks for the video. Great presentation. I’m curious about the food bag switch- what did you start with and why did you make the switch? Peace and happy trails
What did you record the video on?
iPhone 12 mini.
I am really having a dilemma whether to use a poncho with sleeves and backpack space or an ultralight jacket and pants combo....honestly Im leaning toward poncho... what do you think?
I think a poncho would be a lighter and more versatile option. However, if you anticipate windy and stormy conditions it wouldn't give you as much protection as a pants and jacket combo. Personally, I don't find more than a rain jacket necessary in most cases. I have hiked in some pretty nasty conditions with only shorts and a rain jacket. I don't mind suffering a little bit though. As for your pack, you can easily keep your gear dry with dry bags or a pack liner.
Love KS ULTRALIGHT! Rare find
Thank you for recording and creating this great video of your adventure. Way to hit up the 14ers along the way, and kudos for the polar plunges! Stunning scenery and I can feel your appreciation of the experiences through your smiles and reactions.
Thank you so much! It was a truly amazing experience.
Tony always prepares well.

Thank you. This was a very helpful video.
Very good
I saw in your comments that you hiked during the month of July and August. I'm about to do a section of the CT at the end of July. Did you encounter any issues with mosquitos? I noticed you did not bring a head net and you were wearing shorts so I can only assume you did not.
I like your style of showing your gear list. How tall are you? I'm looking at purchasing the Gossamer Gear the One tent, and while it looks like it should fit me (at ~6'1") I'm hoping to get a better idea of if my bag/quilt would be touching the sides consistently.
Sorry for the late reply. I'm about 5'10". I personally came to dislike the design of The One. However, I did have plenty of room at my head and feet.
Great video! Thank You!
Gotta ask, Cam Apel there with you around high point?
It sure is!
Thanks for sharing your hike! What were your hike dates? Way to embrace the 14ers!
You're welcome! I believe I hike mid July to mid August.
More!!
Simplicity & awesome! 👍🏻☺️
Thank you! Cheers!
@@solarhikes7778 welcome, mate ☺️
How easily did you manage to fit full food carries? I have a KS40 myself and a similar setup but I have real problems fitting more than 4 days food and getting it closed. I was considering a bigger bag for this hike in 2022. Interested to see what you ate/if you worried about volume.
I had a KS40 for my hike in New Zealand and did have some trouble fitting all the food inside. There were a few very long carries out there (such as 9 days). For this hike of the Colorado Trail, I opted for the extended collar. I think I would have been fine without it as the max carry was 4-5 days. I tended to carry light bulky items such as chips or bread on the back of the back using the bungie system. As with any system, the volume available for food depends in part on the bulkiness of your other items. I had a very compact system.
Good video. I like the way you showed each item and called them out by name.
Glad you liked it!
Great video brother! You really captured the feel and vibe of the Colorado Trail!
Thanks a ton!
Love your Real, complete, detailed list!
Glad it was helpful!
Good review. Do you ever burn your fingers on the handles? Just asking as I have a similar titanium pot with uninsulated handles which need to careful with.
Thanks! I typically don't burn my fingers but occasionally the wind will blow just right to put the flame towards the handles and they can get a bit hot. I meet someone this year on the trail that molded plastic over the handles to prevent any chance of burns.
I’m thinking of picking one of these up as they have the proven durability though the new version does look like a slight upgrade.
I may have missed it, but what dates/months did you hike. Thanks for the video! A friend and I will start around the first week in August this coming year 2022
I started around mid July of last year and it took 28 days to complete. August will be a very nice time to start but you may get a few icy storms toward the end of the month. Either way, it will be an amazing time!
Thanks for the reply….much appreciated!!
When will you ultralight people realize that getting rid of your teeth will save you the weight of a toothbrush and also limit your diet to soup, both major weight benefits. Pull those pearly whites out now!
Going ultralight is a philosophy. It's about challenging your limits of comfort.
Loved this video amazing views I’m thru hiking the Colorado trail this year on my channel just watching this got me so much more excited thank you poncho
It'll be an amazing experience!
The CT is amazing! You’re gonna love it dude!
I have similar items, im at 10lbs 1 oz
I find that to be a great weight to be at. It's a good balance. It is fun, however, to challenge your comfort tolerance.
You used a 32 degree sleeping bag? Did you find it adequate on cold nights, as I presume the Colorado Trail must have?
Yep, I used a 32 degree bag. It worked very well. There weren't too many really cold nights. I'm not sure that it got below freezing too many times. Even so, I good sleeping pad and some solid base layers will do the trick.
I guess since you were hanging a bear bag you camped near trees. Are the trees suitable for hammocks? Are their enough places where I could hang.
There are plenty of great trees along the trail for hanging a hammock! With that being said, there are a few long stretch's were there are no trees.
Solar Hikes thank you.
4:36 If that is a the wall adapter that came with your iPhone, there are options that are faster that are the same size. If you have a newer phone, it should be able to charge at 20 watts. Anker makes good small chargers with 20W capacity. Not sure if there's a weight difference but in case charging up in town is slowing you down at all, a higher wattage adapter could be a worthwhile upgrade.
Yea, I considered getting a fast charging adaptor but I figured the wall charger would be good enough and I could save a few bucks. A fast charger with two USB ports would be most ideal I think. Thanks for the feedback!
Great gear loadout !!! (new sub friend) !!!! Thanks for sharing
I love the vibe and tone in this video. It’s perfect for chilling out and remembering the hike. Really great job 🙌🏼
Thanks so much!
Awesome video, but I gave a downvote to lower your TH-cam baseweight (you had too many upvotes). Kidding!
Good times...
Nice kit! Ultralight has caught my eye in the last year and a half
Same, just converted to ultralight. Took my 15# baseweight (which already felt light) and now it's hovering just over 10#.
Awesome! It's fun and interesting to test your limits of comfort.
Sub 100, yeah!
Cheers!
How did the GG tent do in the rains? I’ve love mine, have spent 13 nights in it but not in the rain yet.
I'd say it did pretty well. Kept me completely dry even in a lightning storm. I still have doubts about the design of the half vestibule though and the full vestibule side has a large gap under it.
Hi uncle Anthony
Cordage inadequate for hanging a bear.
🤣🤣🤣
Congratulations! Great video and gear list. Thanks for sharing. See any bears?
Thank you very much. I didn't see any bears. Although, that could be a good thing haha.
@@solarhikes7778 most of the bears in Colorado have been killed over the last couple centuries unfortunately thanks to your colonizing ancestors unless you happen to be full indigenous which I highly doubt…now the majority of grizzly bears are found in Montana and Alaska and in western/northern Canada
Wow, incredible country. Man I need to get out to Colorado. Great video!
It really is!
It’s a great trail! Highly recommend it!
Nice video! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Great Video, it was fun hiking with you for a day!!
Yea man! We’ll need to go hike the wind River next summer.
Love you uncle Anthony, you better not get hurt, oh and you better come see us we miss you❤️
Awe thanks! I’ll try to get over there soon.
Youre sleeping bag is also stil 600 gram??
Yep, is that high?
@@solarhikes7778 no, that is decent I think, only I expected bigger difference . Just looking for clues why my equipment weights always so much more
Why is my list shorter and whatever I do the weight is higher.....
You don't count consumables do you?
@@solarhikes7778 yes, aaahh is this my mistake here? Then we quite the same. I compared it also with two ltr water and 3 days ( 6 meals)....at the end that's is what you dragg with you....
Right, but people go off of base weight (no consumables) because it's the only thing that remains (relatively) constant. It standard to not even count fuel, sunscreen, etc.
Bingo ! 😅
Well done. Great presentation. Thank you!
Great presentation.
