Fabricating Firewood
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 8 ม.ค. 2024
There are many ways to make firewood, but to perfect the process and apply the most proficiency to the process saving both time and money, you really do need to have the knowledge and determination to be able to fabricate tools, and assemblies to speed the process up and produce a more consistent product. I have learned a lot in my 50+ years, relying on ingenuity and the drive to learn as much as possible. I have gleaned my fair share of information from watching thousands of videos. I hope to create thousands of hours of content to pay this community back, and to help anyone that is using these common tools to complete their projects by providing valuable information in the process. In this new chapter of my life getting close to retiring from a 25 year career in law enforcement, I started another business with my son who is starting his career. Two dirty, Cops and a Tractor, LLC. So thanks for watching and let me know if you have any suggestions for content, or questions for us.
From humble beginnings, by sheer determination, & hard work, to a Kubota KX040-4 Unboxing.
On this episode of Fabricating Firewood, I briefly discuss where I started in life, my determination and hard work to succeed in everything I face while on my the way to pick up a new Kubota KX040-4 Excavator on April 27th, 2024. Larry Edwards from Edwards Equipment also gives me a Pre-Delivery Inspection and operational/maintenance walkthrough on the new excavator. TDC-24 19JAN2025

I'm glad I don't live in a Country where I need a firearm to feel safe.
Oh yeah. Where’s that.
@@disenfranchisedcitizen1432 Close to where your splitter was built.
Well I’m glad you feel safe but we don’t carry firearms because we don’t feel safe. We carry them for the same reason that you have smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. Being a cop for 26 years gives you perspective that it is your personal responsibility to be your own first responder when the police are 15-20 minutes away on average. It’s no different that insurance.
Do you have their phone number so I can talk to them to get one like urs
Just got this conveyor but has the new chain drive and all I can say is its had its challenges. The biggest thing thats happen is the top extensions are on the inside of the trough and theres. a lip that the wood catches on and when that happens the wood flips and binds up or twists the chain and breaks off the metal cleats or even throws the chain off the sprocket. The company I bought it from has replaced the chain (I was missing 7 cleats after about 20 cord of wood) but I also ground down the lip and used cartridge bolts in place of the regular hex bolts they provided so now the wood doesnt catch on anything and after doing those mods, so far so good after about 3 cords. Now I can do something like you did so I can just keep splitting away and push off the pile at the end of the table instead of placing each piece which takes forever.
I finally got my upgrade chain and paddle conversion kit in I think July. I got it installed and yes, the pieces got to the top and would catch on the bolt heads. I too replaced them with carriage bolts. Occasionally they catch on the extensions and I’m going to install them on the outside instead but I’ve been dredging my pond and haven’t split any wood since the beginning of August. One of the paddles was however ripped completely off when it caught on the folding hinge where it folds the entire conveyor. The other issue is that there are too many paddles. They’re too close and when one of the paddles crests the top and begins to travel back down, another is already cresting the top and gets a falling piece of wood lodged in between the two and stops the chain cold. What I did do though prior to the pond was go to Rural King and buy a 10’ length of #60 chain and a bunch of quick links. I then ground down the pressed pin on the link that was equidistant between each paddle to remove the link and then replaced every other paddle/chain with just chain. So now instead of there being a paddle every 12” there is only one every 24”. This allows the paddle to crest the top and be completely tucked in and on its way down out of the way past the point where the following paddle pushes a piece of wood where it can get caught. It also allows the piece of wood to lay more flat on the conveyor bed as it travels up since it is only 16” long and the paddles are 24” apart so it has pretty much resolved the issue where the wood would hit the conveyor bed hinge halfway up because by the time it gets to the hinge it has fallen flat in between the two paddles that are further apart now. This also gives me enough spare paddles/chain to make a completely new chain or to replace a section if a paddle is by chance ripped off again. That way I don’t have to wait for a replacement piece from range road. It took over a year just to get my chain and paddle conversion kit.
Hello from Joe The Grower Farm in NY. Cool video
Thanks for the comment. Part 2 will be coming out soon.
Nice. Quick suggestion,…before you remove the bladders from the totes,…mark your lines by using the horizontal bars as your guide. It’s literally just a quick walk around each tote. I’ve found that it eliminates any guessing, and reduces time from the use of a tape measure. Stay safe with those knees. I just had a partial replacement about five weeks ago. I haven’t gotten back on my horse yet. I think about how different it’s gonna be when i start back up. I love my Super Split,…but I’m glad I went ahead and ordered the Axis. The log lift and conveyor will greatly benefit my health.
top masterpiece. ))
You should sell them to duck farmers.
“I’m new to this TH-cam thing.” We can tell 🙄
This video should have been titled, “Wannabe prospector struggles moving already excavated rocks.”
That 22-28 is not running properly. I would call Andrew and ask him to review this video.
I just needed to reset/adjust the two stage pump set screw back to factory setting. You tighten it down, loosen it 2.5 turns and then set the jam nut again. It brought it back down to just over 7 seconds under no load in the first stage. I will be shooting a video on the adjustment and seeing if I can get it closer to 7 seconds exactly later on. If you watch our first run video it’s at the 7 second cycle time now. Thanks for the comment.
I admire your work ethic with rehabbing the knee. Can not beat free dirt even if you have to take out small limbs and pretty big rocks from it. Do not push the new knee too hard.
I agree. Cant pass up on free dirt. I have found though over the years that it is easier to hand pick through the piles as much as possible prior to spreading it so you’re not surprised when final grading or later down the road his a buried chunk of concrete when trying to sink some fence posts. I got my left knee replaced about 16 months ago so this one is coming along better since I know what I can and cannot do. Thanks for the comment. 👍🏻
God bless you
Thanks for the like.
Glad to see the knee is coming along. The best of luck on you healing progress 👍 My brother is the road foreman for our local township. They use spray on carwax, like turtle wax, to coat their blades. Use it in winter to keep snow from sticking to the snowplows too. He says it's cheaper than diesel and they are so regulated they had to find an alternative. Good video 😊
Great video I have an Eastonmade 22-28 I run the box wedge, six way and four-way if you sharpen the edge on your box wedge with a flat wheel grinder, you will find it’s a much easier machine to operate
Thanks for the comment. I already picked up some more 4.5” grinding flapper wheels from harbor freight for just that reason. I find that the flapper wheels remove material better and more consistently than the disks. I just have to play catch-up on my other sling business before I can run the 22-28 again. I had my second knee replacement about 6 weeks ago and for the first 4 weeks I was laid up, and on drugs. About week five I was finally lucid enough to be able to start on my taxes. Just finished them yesterday and am sewing all day today in the shop. In the next couple of weeks I’m hoping to get to addressing the hydraulic leak on the back of the cylinder replacing the O-ring. I also had a bad leak last week that I just had to address on my Kubota main hydraulic sending line. Little fires everywhere. That’s been my life for the past month.
Thanks for the support. It is indeed going as planned. There was a lot more pain with this replacement than my left knee replacement in October ‘22 but it’s back on track now.
Especially when I have to sit inside doing stupid taxes. We need a simple Flat tax. You buy something. You pay. Period. No other taxes.
Glad to see the knee replacement seems to be going as well as possible
Gotta love "mud season".
Just subscribed. Good luck on the knee.
Knee is now 5 weeks post op and doing well. Getting around 50% without a cane. Still need to work on the flex and extension of the knee as it is still swollen and stiff. That usually takes about 3 months if it stays the same as my left knee that I had replaced in October 2022. Thanks for the comment and sub.
Hey man, just subscribed, good luck on the knee surgery. Thats kinda funny, i also have had a fair share of knee problems, I've started my firewood business 3 years ago with a Split-Fire 4490 and im now waiting to go pick up my new 22-28 with the attached conveyor later on this year. I cant wait! The split fire is a good machine but damn its so freaking slow. . Cheers buddy
I am now 4 weeks post-op and getting around fine with a cane. Just today was able to do some dirt work with my tractor. Shot a TH-cam short about it on my channel. You will not be disappointed with your 22-28. It is an absolute beast. I’ll be selling that splitfire and most likely be getting an Ultra for resplits later down the road. Thanks for the comment and sub. 👍🏻
@@fabricating_firewoodbrother, I feel ya on the knee replacement. I’m looking to get mine done soon as well. Did you end up getting the Ultra? I got the Super Split HD as my main splitter to start off with. It does well producing heating and bundle wood. I think it would be the best for resplits. It’s fast and efficient. I run it at half throttle. Hope you get back on top of your health journey.
I started with a Splitfire 3403 connected to my tractor quick hitch. It was neither efficient or powerful enough. It also racked unnecessary hours on my Kubota tractor. I got the Eastonmade 22-28. It is well worth the money.
@@fabricating_firewood cool deal.
Just subscribed, Just got home yesterday from my nc to eastonmade (1700 mi drive round-trip) to pickup the 12-22. Spoke with Andrew Easton for about 20 min. Anyways, good luck on the knee surgery. Take care of yourself because you will be busy after your recovery. You have the tools already to grow your firewood business. May upgrade to the 22-28 in a few yrs
I’m at week 4 post-op and am recovering well as this is my second knee replacement having already had my left knee replaced in October 2022. The last three videos I had in queue for editing while recliner bound. Tomorrow I will be going out to move some more dirt before the rain starts and hopefully get some video. I spoke with Andrew at the Paul Bunyan show in Ohio a few months back. Really genuine and nice guy. Makes great products. I am very impressed with the power of my Eastonmade 22-28. Thanks for comment and follow.
Good luck on your knee surgery. My dad had both his done at the same time, he said it was the best thing he ever did. Nice splits 👍
I had my left knee replaced October ‘22. I knew immediately it was a good decision. I even asked my doctor if I could get both done at the same time prior to the first surgery. I didn’t know at the time that a bilateral replacement is an awful lot of trauma on the body and can be very dangerous as well as rehab is way harder. After going through it the first time, I’m glad I didn’t because you rely a LOT on that other knee just to get around. My left knee is about 97% back to normal but with zero pain. I’ve dealt with swollen, stiff and very painful knees for the past 30 years, tricompartmental osteoarthritis. It was definitely the correct choice and I would encourage anyone on the fence to get it done at an earlier age so that they can avoid using the cement on old bones. The younger you are the better since they don’t use cement and use a press fit with a porous surface that the bone can grow into. Thanks for the comment and follow.
My father was a stubborn dairy farmer and scheduled his surgery for the time between the end of spring planting and fall harvest. Was a little rough going at first but he continued farming after that for another 25 years after that. Also had bilateral carpol tunnel surgery 2 years later using the same time scheduling. Tuff man from a harder generation 🤷
I’d say so. In these times we need more tuff men like him.
I have a 22-28 on order. Had the same thoughts on the 12-22 and 37d. Good luck on the knee.
I'm coming up on week 4 post-op and am doing great. Have to do some tax data entry, then I can get back at it. Thanks for the comment. You won’t regret getting that 22-28. It is amazing.
Why you pickin on dude
Well if it’s my son then I’m obligated to do so, if it’s my buddy, I’m just trying to keep him from, getting knocked out by using his back to the machine.
We picked up our 22-28 on 02/20/2024 and we are loving it! Eastonmade Road trip: th-cam.com/video/9cWsEn1r33U/w-d-xo.html
Very exciting. You’re going to be impressed with it! My 22-28 just pushes through everything.
Hope you get that speed figured out.
I did. Good to know. I may be getting mine as early as May.
@@hayesrutherford9415 Yeah, I just saw a video from Eastonmade the other day that their lead times on log spitters is now down to about 3 months. That is fantastic. Mine was ordered in August of '23 and they said 12 to 16 months meaning I wouldn't possibly get my 22-28 until after August of '24. Then in November-December Andrew did a video stating that they were now at 6 months and I got mine delivered at the end of January. And I am here to tell you, there weren't any cut corners on this thing. It is quality built!
I thought the Eastonmade 22-28 was 7 seconds down and back… It seems as though you were down and back in about 9-10 seconds. Were you running the splitter at full power?
Just a day before when I was first testing it, it was running at about 9-10 seconds. I adjusted the pump to the factory setting by screwing it all the way in then backing it out 2.5 turns. This sped it up to just over 7 seconds under no load. Under heavy load that trips the second stage, it will slow down as the second stage is slower. This was the first test run after the initial adjustment, and I didn’t have time to play with the adjustment screw anymore as less than a week later I had my knee replacement surgery. So I’ve been laid up since then unable to play with it. There was also a leak at the rear of the cylinder inlet fitting that Eastonmade sent me orings to resolve, however, I won’t be able to replace it for a couple more weeks once my knee recovers enough to get to. I will be shooting a dedicated video on that oring replacement and adjusting the two stage pump and testing different settings past the 2.5 turns. Trust me, I’m itching to get back at it. Sitting on this recliner for the past two weeks doing nothing but physical therapy is driving me crazy. Thanks for the comment.
@@fabricating_firewoodhow has your recovery been going? I just had a partial replacement last week on Monday. It’s starting to get noticeably better.
What brand is your conveyor? And how do you like it?
The conveyor as far as worth the money, is worth it. However if I would have waited a year I could have got the RR503. I got the RR502 which has the rubber conveyor belt. It does not track correctly and ends up running off center which mauls the belt on either side destroying it. This was the issue from the start and is a horrible design. The Range Road 503 has the sprocket gears chain and paddles. I can get an upgrade kit for it but they’re out of stock. So I will just be fabricating/upgrading it myself in the next few months if they’re not back in stock yet. I’ll be doing a review on the conveyor coming up. Again, if you get the RR503 chain and paddle version it is definitely worth it, but not the rubber belt version. Good idea. Just curious, what’s the good, bad, and the ugly on the Range Road conveyor? I also have a 22-28, but can’t afford the Eastonmade conveyor. Is the Range Road gonna hold up? Worth it?

my RR conveyor makes a nice ornament out in the field ,the crap engene that came with it never started no matter who tryed to get it going ,doesn't track and when I got it the 2 hoses were the wrong length ordered 2 new one but never got them,I think they got tired of hearing yell in their ear about this crappy product
I make burn tubes instead because burn barrels don't benefit from a bottom which makes dumping ash a hassle and blocks airflow available with an open raised tube. I weld rebar feet to whatever (safe) old fuel oil tank etc comes my way after cutting off top and bottom. The roar when the fire gets going is like a small afterburner. Try one. It's cheap and almost no work. When ash builds up i kick the burn tube over and put it somewhere else, no manual ash removal necessary.
In between burns, I use my tractor to transport it to my back yard and set it down, then tip it over dumping all of the ash out. If the ash builds up close to the side holes along the bottom during a burn, I use my leaf blower to clear them. By doing so, introducing oxygen to the burn also gets it going really well. I am not understanding what you mean by burn tubes, can you elaborate more or provide an example or a link to photos? Thanks for the comment.
Congrats on the new splitter. I just order up that same conveyor for my firewood production. I split into bulk bags and am thinking the conveyor will speed things up a bit and save my shoulders from having to throw pieces up and over the sides of the bag. Have you been happy with your conveyor so far? Gave you a sub as well btw.

Congrats on the new 22-28! I just got my 12-22 in November and I love it. Dan on @Back40Firewood just did a video on how to look at how square the end of the log is and if it isn't, how best to put it on the splitter to keep it from either diving or rising up when it goes through. Good first run!
Once you get through the learning curve, you'll fly thru the rounds 😊
