    Shows how short sighted they were as today there is growing demand for extending Central as it is too overcrowded and at max capacity so much so the sub lines are now complaining they are at max capacity with the overflow from Central traffic although someone had a bit of foresight in not demolishing St Enoch's viaduct piers...

    An absolute disgrace that we have to scavenge and hunt for footage of Glasgow pre - 1980's.

    Isnt it sad that such a beautiful structure as St Enoch's was ripped down and replaced by the present horrendous building with no character

    The St. Enoch footage is atmospheric and dark.It's moody too. The quality is a bit naff, but we're dealing with another wise well shot historical document that reflects the times. I've never seen the Buchanan St. Sta.area at all. I know the bus station is on the site, but it would be so hard to place the layout and environs now as everything has changed..

    MrPoupard Buchanan Street rail station was right at the top of Buchanan Street. At the junction of Cowcaddens and Port Dundas Road. Roughly where the Caledonian University is now.

  • @MrPoupard

    Such a shame about the loss of S Enoch station. I'm 60 and had no idea there was a railway station at Buchanan St but there's the proof on film. However I'm struggling to get orientated. What is the junction at 7.20? Where exactly in Buchanan St was it located?

    • @rizwansaqib2065
      @rizwansaqib2065 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrPoupard From what I have read, the old railway station has now been replaced with Buchanan Bus Station. Even I found it very hard to picture the area as it looks entirely different in comparison to today

    • @neilbain8736
      @neilbain8736 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rizwansaqib2065 It does. The high level view from St. Enoch entrance, by the canopy, and up Buchanan St. is one you'd never see today.

      Buchanan Street station was actually located where the British Transport Police building is now. Just beside Buchanan House. Not infact where Buchanan bus station is!

      There is a low wall which runs alongside and to the back of the Caley Uni building which is the remains of Platform 1, still visible.

    If they really wanted to integrate transport, they could build a new station at St Enoch's. Modern DMUs could come in from the north and east, discharge passengers, load up and then go south and west. It could handle all main line services. Central could be used for local trips with spare ground sold off. Go on! I dare you! (It was a great station.)

    The St . Enoch station 1st WW memorial for Glasgow & South Western Railway workers killed in action was relocated to Ayr railway station. It's still there, well looked after but at risk because of crumbling Ayr Station Hotel. Needs another rescue.

    The original plan was to close Queen Street Station and keep Buchannan St station and open out the tunnel to give more room at Buchannan Street Station. But Ho Hum it did not happen at we were left with a very draughty Queen Street Station

    • @iman2341
      @iman2341 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That seems to make a lot more sense given the larger site and longer platforms. Is there any particular reason this was not taken forward?

    • @exilenm2
      @exilenm2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because Queen Street has lower level platforms on the Airdrie-Helensburgh line. It would make no sense at all to close it. I'm very sceptical about this claim anyway.

    • @UrbanGlasgow
      @UrbanGlasgow ปีที่แล้ว

      @@exilenm2 It's true. It was to be called Glasgow North station and it would've been a 14-16 platform station on the site of Buchanan Street station. Queen Street Low Level would stay open, and the High Level was to be converted to a bus station. Further info here: urbanglasgow.co.uk/glasgow-north-station-t1055.html

    How Scotland should be set free from stupid British governments and political parties who were responsible for this crime. The honest Glaswegians who wanted to save St Enochs were right in every way. How these London criminals tore the heart out of a city.

    • @ady8817
      @ady8817 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      For this crime is responsable not British government, but CONSERVATIVE Party, one of their leaders had a highway constructions company, so Conservative Party had affairs with highway lobby (like Republican Party in USA) => for this you could slap David Cameron.

    I JUST remember St. Enochs, but not Buchanan Street. What a shame - no doubt part of that idiot Beeching and the a government of the times that - like most governments - had no vision - and now it's too late. Good film, quality could have been better, but it showed enough.
