3 Minute Ed Theory
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 22 ก.ค. 2018
We believe that educators and ed students need simple, no fuss explanations of big theories. We don't expect that our videos will be the last reading you do on a particular topic, but the first little taster. If you like what you see, go search for some articles on Google Scholar and become an expert.
This channel was created by Matt Fyfield, a PhD candidate at Monash University and a working secondary teacher in Victoria, Australia. For student focussed content, see his other channel @mattfyfield.

Using Google Forms to quiz students
Questioning matters. Research suggests many students go 10 class hours without being asked a single question! We often ask questions of students in class, but hear from only one or two eager beavers. Using a quick online quiz tool like Google Forms makes it possible to question every student. This means our class discussions can be more powerful and inclusive, and no student gets an 'out'.

What Makes Teachers Special? - Pedagogical Content Knowledge
มุมมอง 83K6 ปีที่แล้ว
What makes a teacher special? What does a teacher need to know? What is the most important thing a new teacher needs to develop? Teachers have a very particular type of knowledge. The old saying that if you can't do, teach, sells short what teachers know. Pedagogical Content Knowledge described the knowledge teachers develop about how to teach particular subjects to particular people. This conc...
The Hawthorne Effect - Or Why Everything Works
มุมมอง 194K6 ปีที่แล้ว
The Hawthorne Effect describes the curious reality that humans under observation usually perform better than those who are unobserved. This means that when designing a case study observation you need to be aware of this effect. But it can be used to your advantage. A PL program consisting only of observation will almost certainly improve teacher practice. The Hawthorne Effect can also be used t...
Cognitive Load Theory 4 - How to test learning?
มุมมอง 26K6 ปีที่แล้ว
How can we judge how much a student has learned during an experiment? In Cognitive Load Theory experiments, we usually rely on either tests of recall or transfer to judge learning. But what are they?
Cognitive Load Theory 3 - intrinsic, extraneous, germane.
มุมมอง 78K6 ปีที่แล้ว
The three types of load in Cognitive Load Theory give us serious tips to design our instruction better. While I have presented three types of load here - Intrinsic, Extraneous, and Germane, some theorists suggest that Germane load is not a thing. guys like Slava Kalyuga say that only the first two load types are needed for Cognitive Load Theory to work. While this may be true, I tend to agree w...
Cognitive Load Theory 2 - Working and Long Term memory
มุมมอง 39K6 ปีที่แล้ว
What is your memory? Well, there is more than one type of memory. Your short term memory deals with processing incoming data from the world, and with integrating it into your pre-existing knowledge. Your long term memory stores schemas, or interconnected webs of information.
Cognitive Load Theory 1 - An introduction
มุมมอง 45K6 ปีที่แล้ว
An introduction to one of the most influential theories in educational design. Cognitive Load Theory outlines the limitation of the human information processing system - how much you can learn at once.
Constructivism vs Positivism - a false debate?
มุมมอง 35K6 ปีที่แล้ว
Constructivist and Positivist theories are diametrically opposed, but that doesn't mean they both aren't right. Sometimes in education arguments arise about the best way to teach, or what learning really means. Like most arguments, these are characterised by extremes. Young teachers should consider when to use a direct teaching method, and when to embrace exploration.
Thank you!
Thank for this video. It helped me a lot.🌷
Thank you

But where can I find these actual pck techniques??
For me i tend to panic when i know am being observed
This video really helped me to learn about Hawthorne Effect. Great!
source material links??
Hi there. You could read my thesis if you really want! More helpful would be the work of Sweller - use Google scholar to search sweller and cognitive load. His most recent papers summarise all of this in far far more detail.
@@3minuteedtheory262 How can I find your thesis?
Thank you sir for this video, This is really of great help for me.
Western electric was at&t, not general electric
THANK YOU for clearing that up! It was a bit confusing the way I read about it the first time!
I love henry searle
Very Valuable
Perfect explanation, straight to the point
This is the most understandable explanation of this theory in under 3 minutes! Hope to see more videos like this soon :>
Thank you.
Thank u for this video
Why u stopped making videos
So that's why it's always easier for the students, that attends all the classes and focus on understanding the topic, do not need long time to learn new stuff in opposite to those who do not attend all the classes espacilly when it comes to math. The students that learned the prior knowladge will need less time to connect the new topic to the older topic in the long term memory, whereas, the other needs to process the previous topics alongside the new topic

Hello, I don't know if you are still making videos but I just wanted to say thank you for your content. I am a trainee primary school teacher, currently experiencing cognitive overload myself and found your videos very accessible and also they will be very helpful for developing future teaching strategies going forward
Hasn't this theory been debunked?
Thanks
I believe that it would be more accurate to use the words "observed" or "watched" rather than "studied".
Great example with the food chain there!
so helpful! thanks!
I actually tend to teach better when I’m not being watched 😆
Same here haha
This is a very good and simple explanation of the topic. Thanks.
Teachers arent special. they nearly killed Maths Physics and English to name but a few subjects with their bored rhetoric. It was the same in school, Tech college and finally university. In my experience they are egotistic, patronising, verbose and my god so boring. They specialise in taking the wonderful thing that is a subject and reduce it to a mundanity that is profound. The techniques used in any classroom or lecture theatre are archaic to say the least. Thank god for youtube where you can watch people (sometimes teachers) but who have a genuine PASSION for what they teach AND are good at it. Not a fan sorry.
I'm sorry you never had genuinely passionate teachers and only experienced the egotistical, patronizing, and verbose/boring teachers. I've had numerous educators teach and inspire me throughout my life and I will never forget their impact on me (and I agree there are terrible teachers that create impact as well). I think it's too harsh to categorize ALL teachers in this negative hue, but you are entitled to your own opinion. There are so many aspects that go into what makes teachers effective in their work (resources, students' communities, credentials/qualifications, administration, etc). Thankful you were able to use TH-cam as an outlet for learning.
Great video Ed, when are you touring! ❤️
Epic vid my guys, love that
Ikr, epic video ecksdee
Wow
Hi, ı want to translate this video to turkish. Can you let me do that, please?
I'm studying this as a part of a module and there it says the direction to which performance behaviour changes is not set. Thus, the outcome does not necessarily be an improved one as the effect happens unconsciously.
Useful information, it's refreshing my memory.
😳
Great job, thank you!
thank u
It helps. Thanks.
This really is the path way, a teacher goes through, I extracted from my teaching experience as well.
Thank you for this video <3
Great video 👍
Excellent video! Thank you for explaining PCK so succinctly.
thank you for explain it, sir.
Glad it was helpful :)
thank you so much... this is very informative and really help me in doing my Research
This is a great idea! I hope you keep it up
This is a big help for me 😊😊😊😊
Thank you for these videos. I understand CLT so much better now
Any sources for this? Need it for a paper for university.
You could cite the video.
The Hawthorne Effect is actually a pity if you think about. People should do good without being aware that their being observed and watch. Goes to show that choas exist in us all its just tamed.
unfortunately, it works. We all wish the world would be different but reality is what it is. You cannot change basic human behaviour. Thus, it is better to recognise it for what it is and acknowledge its useful purposes.
It is truly sad but it has its own advantages. Atleast they are in their best behavior. Regardless of the true motives of each one. Like how people such as celebs and politicians do big charity works for example
