The Medieval version of Num-chuks is the Mace or the Flail. It's terrible to let your sword even touch the ground - Terra Spada is a big big no no! If you watch the movie 'The Messenger' there are a couple of good scenes with it being used. Many knights (especially those from Germania) would throw their swords to the ground and wrestle to kill one another by hand. If you watch the movie 'The Last Duel' this is depicted wonderfully! I studied HEMA (numerous weapons), Foil fencing, Sabre fencing, Recurve archery, Longbow archery, Kendo, ballet, and worked out daily for decades, sometimes for 4 hours+ at a time. My muscles never got much bigger, but I was a hard body (and even now as a middle-aged momma I'm kind of fluffy, but my muscles are still solid)! Anyway, even with full armor getting struck hard with a sword or ax still hurts quite a bit. If you decide to try it, wear some quality arming clothes underneath your armor - and you may want to use a 'Pigface Helm' - the pointed 'nose' allows you to breathe a lot easier. Other types of helm sit so close to your mouth that you have to learn how to breathe properly in it or you'll knock yourself out from breathing in too much CO2. This is a good representation of a genuine duel (from 'The King'): th-cam.com/video/5IUFyz8AloE/w-d-xo.html This is an excellent sabre fight from Zorro - both of these actors were serious Fencers: th-cam.com/video/p_hlyLvlqy8/w-d-xo.html (I love it when Zorro says to his opponent, "the Captain's blade is not so firm" - damn, talk about hitting below the belt)! This swordfight scene from 'Rob Roy' is delicious - 2 different types of swords, and 2 vastly different styles of fighting: th-cam.com/video/SVaslN1NiT0/w-d-xo.html (Sword blades were as sharp as scalpels - but grabbing the blade either with a gloved or even bare hand is indeed a valid and often quite useful technique). This Polish Sabre (this is what I studied; many of these techniques would have been used in the Civil War - on horseback) fight from 'The Deluge' th-cam.com/video/ljExTEPNFnM/w-d-xo.html is very interesting - the challenger meets the Colonel, who clearly has a reputation that precedes him as being a bad-ass ('a giant'!), yet he's a small guy -and, he commands all those very large warriors who obviously not only support him and respect him, but seem to admire him too and maybe are a bit afraid. The Colonel compliments his opponent - because he knows his opponent is going to die, but the Colonel is a warrior, so he shows the soldier his lasts respect, and then tells him that it's a pity to die in the rain! The Colonel hardly moves during the duel, but the challenger is moving constantly - if you're fighting someone and they hardly break a sweat - it's time to walk away! Then several times the Colonel points the tip of his sword at his opponent; this is a very threatening posture, and one that exudes a massive amount of confidence; here it also serves as a stark warning because it says, "I could kill you right now, but I'll give you some time to make you feel like you've accomplished something fighting me" - the Colonel knows this swordfight will be an easy win for him. The Colonel then spins his sword around with ease, as if it's a part of his body. At this point the Colonel has given the soldier so many obvious hints that if I were the soldier, I would be begging about now and offering the Colonel anything i could, because I;'d know the fate that awaits me. The Colonel then 'takes' the soldiers sword (knocks it right out of his hands - and, if that's not humiliating enough, makes him go and pick it up to continue the fight; this move makes the soldier submissive to the Colonel. BTW, when I studied swordplay, a young woman (around 16 years old) would take my sword every single time we fought - and every single time my classmates would all go, "oooooooh she got Hannah yet again - since it's every class, she's taken Hannah's sword like, 50 times already; hey Hannah - hang onto your sword"! Anyway, then you see the Colonel standing there with his hand half in his pocket tapping his fingers because he's bored with this fight now. Then you see the Colonel switch from one hand to the other repeatedly - he's well-practiced so that if his right arm gets injured he can still take his opponent with his left! The soldier is now no longer fighting really, but instead just swinging his sword all over the place. The Colonel then 'half-hands' his sword, holding the blade and using the sword to block his opponent. Then in one quick and easy move the Colonel buries his blade into the brain of the soldier - yes, that blade would have gone right through the soldier's skull, easily, in fact. When the Colonel's men move in to finish the soldier off, the Colonel stops them, and reminds them to treat the fallen soldier as a worthy opponent, with dignity and respect. Beautiful!
