Genuine question. How do Catholics reconcile the Catholic teachings that are not written in the Bible. I grew up Catholic then became Protestant. For me it was clear that Catholic Church was doing many things that contradicts the teaching of the Bible. So I’m very surprise that there are many people who are converting to Catholicism. I really want to know why

Why would anyone want to trust in the doctrines of men? Scripture is “God breathed.” Scripture is our full and final authority. How can tradition and oral law be considered equal to Scripture? Rabbinic Judaism is based on the same principle that the Roman Catholic Church is based on, which is they have authority and you don’t. So in other words don’t even bother reading Scripture, just do whatever we say, believe whatever we say, we are authority and you must submit to us. There’s only one truth. My authority is Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. Scripture is our full and final authority, from Genesis to Revelation.

Dhoy-Rheims was translated from the Latin Vulgate in 1582, not the original languages of Hebrew and Koine Greek. It’s a translation of a translation. The Tyndale Bible was created in 1526, translated from the Hebrew and Greek manuscripts, 56 years before Douay-Rheims, and Tyndale was persecuted for it. Luther translated the Bible into common German from Hebrew and Greek in 1517 after Erasmus compiled and printed copies of the original Koine Greek manuscripts. Luther was persecuted for doing that.

If I firmly differ with his interpretation, then I am right and he is wrong. That's why the Roman Catholic Church which is the Body of Christ has the Pope who is the only one who has infallibility from God himself to determine what is the true doctrine as Jesus Christ taught it 2000 years ago.

Talk about straw-manning the Catholic position. He would never venture to make so many false claims in a debate, but you can tell he is relishing the opportunity to besmirch the Catholic (and so authentically Christian) faith in front of an audience which likely doesn’t know any better.

The issue for the Reformers was never over traditions-the issue was traditions that are not supported by scripture or traditions that contradict it. 1. Jesus and the apostles appealed to scripture ad nauseam as the final court of appeal. The phrase “It is written” occurs over 70 times in the New Testament. 2. Jesus rebuked the Sadducees because they didn’t understand the scriptures. he silenced them quoting scripture, “Have you not read what was spoken to you by God?” Matthew 22:29 3. Jesus rebuked the Pharisees, “why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? You have nullified the word of God, for the sake of your tradition.” Matthew 15:3-6 4. At Pentecost Peter explains/supports the outpouring of the Holy Spirit by quoting the prophet Joel and David Psalm 16, Psalm 110. 5. Peter strongly alludes to Paul’s letters as scripture writing, “There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures.” 6. Timothy writes that a good servant of Christ Jesus is trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine. He ends his letter instructing them to “devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.” 1 Timothy 4 7. Early Church councils routinely did everything possible to ground themselves on the scriptures due to this early tradition- to varying degrees of logical and precedented consistency. 8. Augustine when disputing Maximinus relates that where people, traditions and councils disagree, discussions should center on proofs from Scripture. “seek the Truth in Christ and the Scriptures.” He writes, “Let us attend to the real matter in debate, and let our arguments appeal to reason and to the authoritative teaching of the Divine Scriptures, dispassionately and calmly, so far as we are able." from Letter 23 Both had their respective councils of doctrinal authority that were at odds. Augustine notes since scripture stands on their own authority, then discussions should center on proofs from Scripture instead of councils that neither man could agree to. Finally, let's do a word search of the word "tradition" in the Bible. There are only two groups of occurrences of the word "tradition" -one group that is not acceptable and the other group acceptable: The group of traditions NOT acceptable was the false teachings of Judaism that the people thought were on par with scripture but which Christ, Paul and Peter all condemned (Matthew 15:2, 3, 6; Mark 7:3, 5, 8, 9, 13; Galations 1:14; Colossians 2:8; 1 Peter 1:18) The group of traditions ACCEPTABLE is only the direct teachings of the apostles themselves 2 Thessalonians 2:15. "The traditions WE PASSED ONTO YOU whether by word of mouth or by letter"-2 Thesselonians 3:6 "tradition which he RECEIVED OF US (the apostles) The apostles are all dead today. The pope and his minions are not apostles, contrary to their self-proclamations. What people claim as "traditions" today are essentially their own fanciful, bizarre concoctions not from the apostles, but instead clearly contrary to the apostles' teachings.

Well, much of scripture, is indeed instructions as-to what we should and shouln't do as the church. If scripture wasn't the final authority, then i dare say that Apostle Paul wouldn't have commended the Bereans at testing even what he said through the Holy Spirit, by comparing it to scripture. Nor would he entrust people to God AND the grace of His word in acts 17 after he left. Nor would he say cursed are those who add to it, or subtract from it. Also i dare say the devil wouldn't have tried to use it against Jesus Himself. Only to have had the scripture thrown back at him. The word of God, sharper than any two edged sword. Exasperated and entrusted by God unto humans via the Holy Spirit, to be kept as guidance to His church. Certainly not something a man should meddle with. As someone who has been graced to hear the still small voice of God and cast out many demons as a deliverance minister in my short time on earth, and who has been blessed to see many miracles through obedience to the Holy Spirit (filthy rags of course lest any accuse me of boasting), the Holy Spirit has indeed revealed things that are not explicitly in scripture such as the function and name of certain spirits I've had to cast out. Or in other cases particular directions to go when i go for a walk so i may witness to a certain person. But doctrinally and directionally over all, it always goes back to, and is testable by scripture. You see, when things get supernatural (as your life should be as a christian), scripture, as well as discerning, spirit filled, wise and well read leaders in the church are much needed as a compass, but even these wise leaders, go to the scripture as their final authority. We will never deviate from scripture. And i know the scripture doesn't tell me NOT to do pray to a human, but it does say a lot about who i should pray to. And thus by proxy, me praying to anybody else is raising them into omniscience (hearing millions of people at the same time) and lowering Jesus' position of High Priest. This would be me adding to church tradition recorded in scripture. In a position of Apostolic authority in the modern sense I would never add to, or remove from early church traditions that are revealed in the book of acts or the epistles. And the book of acts church in Jerusalem, IS the first church. not a building or a denomination. But the earliest recorded congregation of believers under apostolic leadership in scripture. The word catholic universal or roman has nothing to do with it. Before the canon was compiled, after the first century, Sola Scriptura in the new testament sense wasn't available anyway, so they relied on the Holy Spirit as the teacher of all things paired with the Old Testament, word of mouth and creeds written by the early church to rightly divide the future doctrine, and these Apostles, through the Holy Spirit were inspired in the removal of the old covenant sacrificial methodology. The fact they didn't follow Sola Scriptura in the first century, whether you believe in SS or not, is a non argument. As it wasn't possible for them, especially in the case of being obedient to the command not to add or subtract from scripture at which point hadn't been written yet and made available to all churches yet. The case that SS in it's modern sense is something we should follow today isn't dependant on its availability in the first century. It's dependant on what information we have available now. That being said I would encourage you all to ask the Lord to fill you with the Holy Spirit and ask Him to guide you, lest you be blown around by every wind of doctrine and change from denomination to denomination according to how much your intellectual taste buds have been satiated by whatever debate winner you have decided on. Or worse yet on how much you don't like a particular man of God on the opposing side.

What I do notice is that Cowboy Jimmy simply ignores that James White says and goes with his prepared remarks. For those who don't know this that is a debate tactic where you don't address what your opponent has said and address issues that you want to talk about Finally, Cowboy Jimmy uses another cheap debate tactic in the question and answer time. When Dr White says something that Cowboy Jimmy doesn't agree with Cowboy Jimmy tells Mr. White he is wrong and then cuts him off from answering.

Which Sola Scriptura version are you pushing for? Is it the ones that believe infant baptism is salvific or the ones that do not? Or full immersion or not? Is it the Liberal Evangelical version or the Conservative Evangelical version? Could it be a Calvinist or Armenian or Reformed or the Anglican viewpoint, Dispensationalism, Antinomianism? Those that believe in woman ordinations or same sex marriages? Lord’s supper symbolic or sacramental? The once saved always saved group or the not? Should women keep silent in church or speak and is this with or without their heads covered? Maybe Mormons, JWs, SDA’s, Christadelphians, or the Oneness Pentecostals position…as they ALL preach from the same Bible also??? Surely you cannot think all these positions are acceptable. If not then which one is correct and why do you get to be the one to choose? Is yours the infallible one? If not then who really cares?

It’s seems to me Dr White kept wanting to throw barbs out at the Catholics and actually seemed to “dislike” them as opposed to stick to the discussion point. I cringed 😬 when he said the Catholics killed some missionaries. I thought; he sounds more like a Christian who wants to win the “argument” thru attack rather than a real “discussion” on a theological point. He seemed to have put the Protest back into Protestantism as opposed to a good defense and/or discussion on the topic of Sola Scriptura and who decides what it means? Every “good” Bible Church can’t agree on what is needed for salvation. Ie Baptism;? Needed or not? Is it symbolic or does it do something. We all read the same Holy Word of God; yet we can’t agree on one thing Jesus clearly instructed us to do.

Real true Christians( who have a relationship with Jesus) who know the gospel of Jesus rejoice when someone repents and gives their life to Christ. Fake Christians and those who are DECEIVED rejoice when someone converts to their BRAND name of Christianity. Remember ALL denominations( YES, every last one) are MAN MADE despite what you have been told. If you believe otherwise then you will be very easily deceived. In fact it would prove you are already deceived/brainwashed and will probably remain so for the rest of your life. It is easier to deceive someone than to convince them they have been deceived. Your Relationship with Christ is what matters.
