“50 Ways to Watch a Movie”
EPISODE 035: FILM THEORY DISCUSSIONS
What does it mean to watch a movie? Are you watching for the plot or the aesthetics? Are you looking to be entertained or emotionally stirred? Do you want to be able to think about it or do you just want to turn your brain off? These are all important questions to ask when you step into the proverbial theater. WR&P cohosts Ryan and Kevin take the time to consider what they prioritize when they watch a movie.

Heyhey! Enjoying the podcast! Keep it up, the views will start coming:) Linklater was my favourite director for a good while too, I think I still know the first two Before films by heart. I remember that Before Midnight was the first film being part of a trilogy that I was actively waiting to release. I also fell in love with Vienna in big part because of Before Sunrise, and specifically visited the Cemetery of The Unknown because of that film. I encourage you to check out Hal Hartley if you haven't yet. I think you'll love him! Lots of parallels between Hartley and Linklater. Hartley also has working class background, and he also started his carrier being part of the late 80s early 90s Independent scene. He also has his favourite actors to work with who swear by him. He also cast both Adrienne Shelly and Thomas Jay Ryan in their first film rolls, starting their carriers in film if I'm not mistaken, Adrienne Shelly later becoming a director on her own. He also made a lot of films, and still keeps making them, always exploring, pushing, respecting what's at hand, adapting to current financing options (latest of his films is in post-production rn, happy to say I helped to found it and I'm keenly waiting for the Blueray). I think the Long Island Trilogy (trilogy by proximity - geographical and temporal) or the Henry Fool Trilogy (trilogy like the before series, first film was made to be it's own thing without a planned second instalment. But once the second film got into pre-production, it was clear that there will be a third one) would be a perfect podcast subject. After his initial success, he became known as the Jean Luc Godard of Long Island after all:D There are many great interviews with him as well, its worth an afternoon's time! I really enjoy his work because its never stale, every new film usually brings something completely unexpected. Sometimes an explosive dance choreography in the middle of an otherwise non-musical production (Surviving Desire - 1992), other times he surprises you in more experimental ways, like telling you the exact same story three times during a film, only with three differing casts in three significantly different cities and cultures (Flirt - 1995). In a way it is hard to pin Hartley down, probably part of the reason why he never became a household name like Linklater. In the introduction chapter of his book 'The Cinema of Hal Hartley - flirting with formalism' (2017), Steven Rybin writes "Hartley’s films have the potential to move viewers in sometimes startling ways or, perhaps more accurately, Hartley’s films encourage viewers to work to develop complicated emotional relationships to them." Similarly in an article titled ‘What I Like About Hal Hartley, or rather, What Hal Hartley Likes About Me’ (1999), Sophie Wise writes "Hartley’s films offer a detached model for identification which paradoxically coaxes the spectator into an attachment. By being made part of the process I felt as integral as an actor or director. The work I perform as a spectator, or perhaps what we could call a spect(actor), is what seems to make his films work". When I read the above it was an AHA moment for me. I finally understood why his films felt soo personal and close to me. Ever since I am fascinated by fragmentation and trying to work with it myself. So thank you Hal Hartley, forever a fan! Hope you don't mind the long comment, felt like you might enjoy something a lil more detailed. Thanks for the podcast again I just subscribed! Keep it going will be waiting for the next episode! Peace and all the best❤

@@WindReelAndPrint Absolutely! I'm glad my enthusiasm for Hartley is spreading :D He is one of those directors who found me in the perfect time of my life for me to be really appreciative of what he does. 0 expectations in this regard and no pressure obviously, just throwing it out there, if you want to do a Hartley collab, I'd be down for that! I wrote my BA thesis on the Henry Fool trilogy, could share some notes or whatever suits you:)
