So Peggy is 8.5 months old and starting to run in harness in tiny amounts. She can only go 200-400m at a time right now, so what is there that you can really do? Well coach came up with this great little session to train directions!

Peggy's FIRST CANICROSS Run!

Peggy has hit 8 months old and it's time to get her in a long harness and having her first go at canicross! Obviously the key here is to make sure the runs are short (like really short!) and fun for her to just get a little taste and leave her wanting more as we gradually build her up to running her first full kilometre! @@tracieems616 short, sweet and fun! It’s a perfect one 😁 we’ll definitely do it again to hone our skills and for me to work out timings a bit better as she’s quite different to Dizzy at the moment!
That 3rd run, heck she’s like a rocket 😂👍
@@jessdunn4957 🚀🚀🚀
I'm one and done with canicross (too many gray hairs on my head) so no more new dogs, but I still love watching how Peggy progresses. Are you going to race Dizzy and Peggy tandem?
@@jimmcbride6297 Noooo! Just do what I do and use a hat to hide your grey hairs 😉 Thanks, hopefully she’ll be a smasher 🤩 I’m not planning on two dog teaming (maybe could be convinced for a fun video 😏), as they have very different styles that won’t necessarily match. So racing will be once around with each 🥵 I definitely want to try Dizzy running free with Peggy Canicrossing at some point too.
Where could I get like a small cani cross harness and just cani cross gear for a yorkiepoo
@Adventures_oakley_clover_tuck depends on where you are in the world. I would suggest going to a club for a run, they all have a kit bag with loads of things to tryout. However if that’s not possible I’d always recommend contacting Snowpaw store and they’ll give you great advice and get you kitted out to go 😁
Dose cani cross have any races for teens like 14 and up
@Adventures_oakley_clover_tuck Yes! Lots of race organisers in the UK have a junior category. Canicross midlands, CaniX, NATB & BSSF all have very good junior races with ages from about 7 up to 18
@thatspottydogruns really I will definitely look into some near me.
Where could I get a small cani cross harness and gear at?
@Adventures_oakley_clover_tuck best bet is to find a club near you, they have loads of kit to try out and find the perfect one. If that’s not possible then I highly recommend getting in touch with the team at Snowpaw Store - they give great advice and will no doubt be able to get you kitted out 👍
@thatspottydogrunsthank you so much!!!
She looks to be a natural! One question I have is her age - not too young? Look forward to watching your team out there!
@@NatalieEa100 good question as I didn’t explain the plan that clearly 🫣 She’s eight months here and living the life of a sprint queen running 200m (it takes us around 35 seconds) at a time once a week. She’ll run 1km broken up into various portions for the next month or so (again once a week) before trying a whole 1km. We’ll do this for a while and I doubt she’ll race a full 5k until winter 2025/26 The really short distances are perfect as it’s good for her to build up her stamina and strength safely whilst also being super fun and leaving her wanting more. The added benefit of doing 200m is I can go flat out so can help her a lot by running as much resistance off as I can which is even more fun for her. You’ll see over the next few videos all the cool things we can train over really short distances so she has learnt everything before we start actual training and racing when we can really start building consistent distance and regularity around Easter (when she’ll be 12 months old) 😁
@ thank you so much for explaining!! This is a super exciting time and I look forward to watching your journey with Peggy! Love this subscription - it’s the only good one out there covering canicross!!
@ Thanks 🖤🤍🖤🤍

What’s amazing is how you can see her showing her purpose-bred drive even as a young dog! She looks to be a promising canicross partner 😊 Will you be running her and Dizzy together? They’d make an awesome team 👍
@@sophb0322 it’s amazing to see isn’t it! Something about watching a dog do exactly what they are bred to do is so cool. I’m not sure about together 😬🤣 they have quite different styles. But they will certainly be swapping over in races that allow it 😁
@thatspottydogruns It could be a bit chaotic running them together I suppose 🤣 I've seen multiple dog teams at canicross events and genuinely wonder how people don't fall over lol. Either way it's great to see different running styles with different dogs 👍
@ Haha! Yes, it looks like a quick way to end up hugging a tree 😆 we’d struggle with puddles… Peggy would go flat out straight through them and Dizzy would tip-toe characteristically around the edge 🤣🤣
You’ve got 2 great dogs 😊 that I-dog harness looks a very good fit, no gaping

Peggy looks like she is absolutely loving this ❤😊
@@jessdunn4957 she has the BEST time 🤩 took her again this weekend and her whole back end was wagging at the finish 😍 she might even enjoy it more than barking 🤔
I know it might sound odd but it’s actually good to know that even excellent runners like Dizzy sometimes drop back when running! 😅 Alfie is the same on our training trail - he’s done it that many times he treats it more like a fast walk than a canicross run - yet as soon as we’re at an event he switches on and goes for it! I think a lot of dogs don’t like lapped courses; either way though Dizzy did well! 👍
@@sophb0322 Thanks 🖤🤍 he enjoyed the course but getting the drive to run no matter what is tough to find in non-purpose bred dogs, you’ve got to be either really lucky or an outstanding team I think. Good luck with your running with Alfie!!! Sounds like a great team 😁
Love the videos and commentary! Well done Team Dizzy! A tough day out.
@@NatalieEa100 thanks 🖤🤍🖤🤍 tough but enjoyable nonetheless 😁
I was confused about the course map until you said "lap." I was really rooting for Dizzy to figure it out the second day, but he wasn't having it this day.
@@jimmcbride6297 Yes, it was a different one to break up in your mind too as you couldn’t really break it up km by km as the splits fell at different points each lap. Proper Cross Country vibes! Not Dizzy’s format unfortunately, very tough to get a stubborn Dalmatian to run laps when there is a food truck at the finish 🤣
Awesome video and great run as well! 🔥
@TheoDeacon-y8h Thanks! It was a tough run, we’ll definitely have better days but enjoyed it nonetheless 😁

@@tracieems616 Yesss! Get that matching team kit going 😁 It just shows what a long way 5k is even if you run it in 18 mins. There is always time to make up for a slip up. Dizzy’s last two km’s were amazing and faster than any previous race around this course. He closed it out and finished like an absolute pro.
Congratulations to you and Dizzy! What a great race. So glad I found your channel. I'm hoping to try out canicross with my dog and find your videos super helpful.
@@oli73490 Thanks so much 🤍🖤 Amazing! what dog do you have?

@ ah nice! You’ll have loads of fun 🤩
Congrats on 1k subscribers! I am always so impressed on how Dizzy remains focused on passes. I always have to shorten the leash when passing or being passed. Do you get upset when there is "interaction" of the dogs when on the course?
@@jimmcbride6297 thanks 🤍🖤 We’ve never had any interactions that have been properly negative. As you say Dizzy’s focus and temperament are excellent. So I never mind. Dizzy is actually quicker on a busy racecourse than in a time-trial environment anyway. Although recently there were reports of dogs getting bitten at the World Championships in Italy. Shockingly none of these actions resulted in disciplinary actions 😡 not sure how I’d feel in that scenario
@@thatspottydogruns Hopefully it is rare that blood is drawn between dogs (I have seen fur fly though). I would hate if muzzles were mandated from a few bad actors. The canicross crowd seems to have more temperamental dogs than the multidog sled dog teams I have seen. I wonder if this is because there is a more personal relationship when running behind your dog.
@ quite the opposite - muzzles are often banned at some of these events! I suspect the big teams don’t get a chance to interact as there is so much time between them on the trail. Canicross works best with close racing… it’s how humans work too 😁
Great running, a podium even with a 💩 stop! 😆 Sse you at Thetford

@ it was the first canicross race me and the doggo entered last year, hoping to go quicker and break 20 minutes by January!
@ awesome 🚀 it’s a tough one to place yourself at for that time. If you go too far forward in the queue everyone disappears off but if you go too far back you can get caught in traffic. I wanted to get into our first 2k race in late october but I can't bridge the jog to the actual canicross. Does that's make sens? Please help.
@@danielleemond9209 I think I get what you mean. There are a number of ways you can get the dog to run with more focus and drive. Some simply get someone on a bike to ride out front so they have something to chase. Running with other dogs is also great as they really get the pack mentality and don’t want to stop and sniff. With Dizzy, I did interval training to train this. We started with really short intervals, 200-400m with loads of praise and fun. Then we gradually lengthened them out, he didn’t know we were going further, it just seemed like the same fun thing as always. Also, most dogs generally LOVE to race! Dizzy works a lot harder when we are racing compared to when we are training. So they might surprise you!!! Good luck - let us know how you get on 🖤🤍

Great video. Question: would running with your dog increase or decrease your own standalone 5k pace? In other words would you get lazy as you dog pulls you?
Interesting thought. I guess most people will get fitter and quicker as Canicrossing gets them more into running. Biomechanically, running with a dog is good for increasing your cadence too so you might find you get quicker as you are stronger and can move your legs faster. Plus all that cross country mud and hills will help too! But, Psychologically I know a lot of people find dogless running way harder now! So having the ability to push yourself right to the end could be diminished for sure. Of course it's such a different sport to dogless running it's actually tough to say. But most people I know (including world champions!) are getting quicker dogless.
We've yet another word for "steady", I use "easy" and even more extreme "walk"' for when one of us needs a break from running. She's possibly the only dog who calms down at the word walk lol
@@SophieGorman 🤣 - I love it, they are good ones!!
Walking to heal is overrated anyway, just ask Maxus. I reckon recall is more important for off lead times to give your arm a break. Shes a cutie pie with so much potential, and big bro Dizzy will show her the ropes.
@@cariboudle6915 definitely! She’s doing well with the recall, trying to overcome distractions from birds will be the big challenge!! She’ll be walking on a belt rather than me holding the lead for some walks before too long now too… maybe I’ll come and canitrek her in the Zombies sometime 🤔
