    LOL. As ;long as the umpire determines that the ground ball passed over the base, then it doesn't mater where it lands on the other side of the base -- it is still FAIR. If the ball never hits the ground, and even if it appears to fly over the base, then whether it's fair or foul is determined only by where the ball lands. There's some subjective eyeball judgment by the umpire in the first case -- but not in the second case. That's what makes the call tricky -- and potentially in dispute.

    Those guys dropping their bat in fair territory around the plate with plays at home is very very questionable.... interference in this situation is at the umps discretion but they need warned to knock it off and get their bats away from the plate ...

    I’ve tried to explain this to people for years. Concerning a ground ball… Doesn’t matter where it first hits or where it hits after it passes first or third base…If it passes over either base it is a fair ball. It’s as simple as that..Actually a ground ball could be a fair ball and never hit in fair territory....as long as it crossed over first or third base( don’t know if this is physically possible)

    What happens if a runner purposely gets hit by a batted ball? Is it just runner out dead ball? For instance bases loaded one out, groundball to the SS should be an inning ending double play but the runner going from 2nd to 3rd purposely gets hit by the ball.

    The 2nd part about the ball on a line drive (in air) sailing over 1st base or 3rd base then landing foul has a lot of ppl confused! Thanks for clarifying this. Have had many discussions with ppl about this that always think it is a foul ball! They can't believe it, when I tell them, by rules, that's a fair ball! That's why the ump stands at 1st and 3rd to help make the determination.

      Weren't you listening,a line drive that goes over the bag and goes outside the line is a foul ball all the time.,the ball must land inside the line in order to be fair.

    there is only contact if the fielder makes an error, why does an error on the fielder turn it into runner interference? everyones safe, no call would have been the right call.

    In LL baseball (10-11 years old) tonight, I had the batter deep in the box, swung late on an inside pitch and fouled it off before hitting the catcher's glove. Is that catcher's interference or foul ball? Very odd play. I called it a foul ball (possibly incorrectly).

  • @alanhess9306
    @alanhess9306 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The MLB rule was changed a few years ago. The ball no longer needs to hit the hand or glove first. If the ball goes from the bat to the catcher's chest protector and rebounds and is caught, it is a foul tip.

    He’s says the defense coach can ask for the result of the play towards the end of the video, that’s the offensive coach.

  • @gjnelsondotcom
    @gjnelsondotcom 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    THIS JUST CONFUSED ME MORE!!! 1. If it touches the base or touches fair territory after the base it is fair, even if it later goes into foul territory. OK. 2. If it’s a fly or drive that travels over the base and bounces in foul territory it is foul. OK. But what if it is a GROUND ball that touches the ground in fair territory BEFORE the base, bounces OVER the base then lands in foul territory?

    • @bogie7311
      @bogie7311 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Regarding your third example… This would be a fair ball… The ball bounced over the base which makes it fair. Again, it doesn’t matter where it first hits, it’s whether or not it passes over first or third base… And it doesn’t matter where it hits after it passes over the base. Remember this is only for ground balls.

    Happen to my son tonight...he even got to ball after kick yet without time to "clear" and pegged runner in the bacm as he was INSIDE the foul line...UMP TALKED AND LEFT RUNNER AT 1ST! Ump also missed a drop 3 tag and then gave batter chance to still run to first after he was half way to dugout cause he himswlf felt the HARD tag i teach my son to give so its noticed! The pitcher actualy completed the out by throwing it to first before runner got there! Sad part is he called one our batters out sayn first was ocupied when THERE WAS 2 OUTS!! His balls and stikes was good but other parts of his game far as being loud and letting players know his JUDGEMENT along with not knowing rules could use ALOT OF WORK!

    The final comment in this video is not 100% correct. He says, "And coaches - remember to tell your runners - you must avoid contact with a fielder making a play on the ball, *even* a deflected ball." If a fielder muffs a ground ball and it is deflected a short distance, still within the fielder's reach, and a runner makes contact with the fielder, the runner is out for interference. However! If the ball is deflected some distance away from the fielder, requiring the fielder to chase it, and the runner unintentionally bumps into the fielder, there should be no interference. How could the runner possibly predict that the fielder is going to muff the grounder and then go chase it?

    There are situations in high school games where intentional interfernce vs accidental "interference" makes a big difference. Runners on base, catcher throwing ball back to pitcher accidentally hits the batters bat, no intent by batter to interfere - that's nothing, live ball, whatever happens, happens. Same situation but batter intentionally sticks the bat out to interfere with the throw - Oh oh. Houston, we have a problem! I'm not sure that a blanket statement that intentional doesn't matter.

  • @robertbrown7470
    @robertbrown7470 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Coach picks up the ball on the pickoff attempt. Runner standing on first, nothing happening. No play. Nothing. What play is he interfering with? It's a judgment call on the part of the umpire. "Coach, don't pick up live balls." Runner on first, batter hits a ball down the first base line but obviously foul, coach fields the ball and tosses it back to the pitcher. Now that is a doulbe play - Batter and runner are declared out and coach is ejected from the game! Right? Nothing. Not a good idea on the base coach's part, so what. I'm not going to say anything to the coach. Balls dead. Get the ball back to the pitcher. Runner on first, pitch is in the dirt, catcher blocks the ball, runner is not stealing or running on the pitch. Ball rolls over to the batter who picks it up and tosses it to the catcher. "Batter, don't pick up a live ball." Or, batter tosses ball to catcher who throws the runner out at second. Batter is credited with an assist. Good play! Maybe not but never say never. Unless there is a specific rule that requires interfernce be called any time an offensive player or coach touches the ball, with runners on base, I've got nothing unless there is interference. It all depends what the situation is and what happens. If there is interference, call it. If not, use good judgment in the situation. The score is visitors 22, home 0. Top of 7th inning. Batter picks the ball up and tosses it to the catcher, runners are not running or attempting to steal to run the score up the flag pole. Everyone wants the game to end. Put a fork in it. Don't make life difficult. Umpiring is tough enough as it is. "Batter, thanks for helping but don't pick up live balls." Ok, you've said what needs to be said.

    FAIR BALL is a batted ball that settles on fair ground between home and first base, or between home and third base, or that is on or over fair territory when bounding to the outfield past first or third base. this IS the rule. YES or No? If - Yes! Please look at what is written. and it is written after bouncing over the bases the ball touches into the outfield behind the bases. YES OR NO? IF YES - Ball is FAIR. Then if the ball does not touch the outfield and touches another territory, then according to the rules this ball is a foul. Yes or No?

    As a random aside, if it’s a fly ball/line drive that deflects off a fielder into the runner, it’s additionally considered grounded even that fielder or another fielder catches it before it hits the ground.
