Welcome, friends! I’m Claire, and this is The Wanderlust Way-a channel devoted to uncovering the fascinating stories hidden within the places I explore. Living in the North of England, most of my adventures take me across Britain, with the occasional overseas journey sprinkled in.
From historical wonders and ghostly tales to folklore, literature, and the delightfully strange, I love bringing these stories to life and sharing them with you. Along the way, I also offer travel tips to help you plan your own adventures.
Fun fact: I started this channel to prove to my kids that if you put your mind to something, you can achieve anything. It’s been an amazing journey, and I couldn’t have done it without you. Your likes, comments, shares, and subscriptions mean the world to me. Thank you for being part of The Wanderlust Way family! 💕
Enough waffle, let’s wander -because every adventure begins with a story. 🧭

Edinburgh 🪦 Historic True Crime 💀 Burke and Hare walking trail - Dead but not buried
Welcome to Edinburgh, Scotland, in the year 1828-a time when a chilling series of murders sent shockwaves through the city and sparked outrage across the world.
In this video, we’ll journey back to the very beginning, tracing the footsteps of two of history’s most infamous killers, William Burke and William Hare. As we wander through Edinburgh’s shadowy alleys, eerie graveyards, and historic inns, we’ll unravel the sinister tale of greed, deception, and murder-crimes committed not out of vengeance, but for profit, feeding the ever-growing demand for fresh cadavers in the name of medical science.
But this story isn’t as simple as it seems. It’s a tale of opportunity, corruption, and ruthless ambition-one that will pull us deep into the darkest corners of Edinburgh’s history.
A word of caution: While every effort has been made to ensure historical accuracy, this video is intended for entertainment purposes only. Viewer discretion is advised, as the subject matter may be unsettling to some. I take no responsibility for any nightmares that may follow!

Loved that. Thanks. Theres a Highwayman buried in an unmarked grave at a church in Wotton-under-Edge called William Crew. Hes sposed to have known Turpin. After being caught for doing numerous highway robberies.. He admitted his crimes which was enough to hang him but denied murder. Its believed he was terrified of being dissected. But found guilty He was hung and dissected and his remains buried at the church in wootton under edge where he became a vicar when he got a pardon previously but found there was not enough money serving the lord and went back to robbery. On the day of his hanging there was a huge storm and the locals thought it was a sign from god that his hanging was wrong.
Hi Claire i have Been to Edinburgh its a nice Place i have heard About the Burke and Hare Story This Should be interesting Video Thanks 😀👍
It is my favorite holiday
Mine too
Great video, from my local area!
Thanks so much! Hello over there in Donny 👋
My Dad and I were born in Enfield, Middlesex. Dad mentioned to me although the vicinity has changed. Buildings, roads etc. The ghost of . Richard Turpin had been witnessed several times on his travels.
Hi Graham, I've heard a few stories about Dick Turpin's ghost! Seems he gets about a bit 👻
As an Historian, any famous grave is not really going to be the actual grave; more than likely a tourist trap. A huge grave like that, is for sure, a tourist trap. As for grave robbing and his body, a possibility but most likely it was sold as a Cadaver before the burial and another corpse put in his place. That being said, the only truth in History is that there is no truth only interpretation. It is worth following on from this very well put together presentation, a book written by James Sharpe. He is or was a Professor of History at York University and is also the author of The Bewitching of Anne Gunter (Profile) as well as several books on crime and punishment. The book on Dick Turpin is: Dick Turpin - The Myth of the English Highwayman. Hardcover - 19 Feb. 2004 Great video and look forward to more ☺
Hi David, thank you so much for the book recommendation! I've added it to my must-read list! You have made a very good point about the grave site 👍 thank you for watching the video

What lovely vlog and very helpful as I’ll be going there in a couple of months! You’ve gained a new subscriber 🙂
Thank you so much and welcome aboard! Hope you have a fabulous time on your holiday
Great vid, wrong gun! X
My bad 🙈 sorry 🫣 but thanks for watching 😀
Thanks so much for such an excellent and informative video. I can remember seeing Britannia moored in Holyhead harbour in the late 1960’s, so its a real treat to go behind the scenes.
You are very welcome - thank you for watching!
Your channel popped up in my feed and now I'm subscribed - Loved this video and will be binge watching the rest of your content 😀
Hey Andy 👋 welcome aboard!
We(wife, daughter and I) went to Haworth about 8-9 years ago, we stayed in a hostel just below the village, lovely old building. We did all the touristy stuff including walking out the moors to the supposedly site that gave Emily the inspiration for Wuthering Heights, a long but beautiful walk, just make sure it's a clear day. The only thing we didn't do was go on the train, a big regret since. Top half of the village is beautiful, I hope they retain its oldy world look.. Enjoyed and subscribed 😊
Hi there, thank you for watching and subscribing! Haworth is lovely - was your walk to Wycoller by any chance? I made a video on that too th-cam.com/video/tfBBgFtg9yo/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
@TheWanderlustWayisback Top Withens was where we walked to, reputedly the inspiration for the farmhouse in Wuthering Heights.. So they say 🙂
@@kevos65 ah yes I remember that now! Up in the moors was it?
It was, you pass a little bridge of which there is a plaque on it.. If I remember correctly it had reference to Emily and /or her sisters, I have photos of it somewhere @@TheWanderlustWayisback
A lovely video showcasing a beautiful village. Thank you Some people who have said negative things need to get a grip and find better things to do.
Thank you - that really means a lot 🥰
Wow. How interesting video.
I found out once, on Google when the British Army was Founded. In 1660. Golden Age of Highwaymen & Pirates. Police-less 17th & 18th Centuries. Police-begin 19th Century. Police-full 20th & 21st Centuries.
The First Union Flag of Britain dates back to His Majesty King James the 1st. 1606. St George & St Andrew together firstly. The Flag went on through the 17th & 18th Centuries. The St Patrick of Ireland joined the Union Flag on the 1st January 1801. 🇬🇧 Regin of His Majesty King George the 3rd. Metropolitan Police : Founded & Established in 1829. By Sir Robert Peel 1788-1850. Georgian Era 1714-1837. City of London Police : Founded in 1839. Victorian Era 1837-1901.
Very interesting thanks for the info
wow very interesting information - thank you for sharing
So he didn't jump off Highgate bridge in London on his horse then ?
I had a rather scary experience with spirits in the black horse when they charged me £22 for 2 double vodka n cokes 🤯
That is terrifying 😨

Have a wonderful time 😎
Ed Sheeran wasn't born there though.. He was born in Halifax which is a few miles from it. He then moved to Suffolk. I don't get why people keep saying this.
Hey, thanks for the info 🙂
@ Update: so I discovered that he lived here as a toddler for a year and a half before moving 🤷♂️ But yeah, he was born in Halifax.
@@who_is_dis hey, thanks for finding all this out 😀

Thank you for that , I didn't know that much about him until now !
You're welcome - thanks for watching 🙂
Hi lovely. Our average steps back in October were 25k a day in Puerto Rico🤣🙈 An amazing thing as here in Ireland, unless the weather is okayish and we go to woods, we don’t get more than 5k steps at all. Is it kinda the same for you in England? Thinking of moving to Puerto Rico in like 10 to 12 years, so hoping all plans go well 🤞🏼
Hi there - to be honest we don't do too bad with our steps here because where we live there's lots of walks around and I have to do a lot of walking when I'm out videoing for the channel. I hope your plans to move to Gran Canaria go well 🙂😎
Any relation to the latest highwayman Keir Starmer?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 that's a very good question 🤔
@@antonrudenham3259 Nah... Turpin wasn't a complete arsehole like that moron ....
Wow it takes time and dedication to do that
It was so much fun - I'd love to see the process from start to finish
What is the expected tip to give please for the housekeeping staff?
I don't think there's an exact figure but give what you can afford it will be appreciated. We had the same housekeeper for the entire week so rather than leaving a few pound each day we gave a note (in his hand) towards the end of our trip. I can't remember think it was about £20 for 7 days for one room. My son did the same because they had their own room. I'd also recommend tipping the waiters, you might find some more attentive if you do that 👌
@TheWanderlustWayisback thank you for your response, much appreciated 👏....heading there tomorrow so if you have any more insights please share with me lol x
@@philrogers5902 just dont drink the tap water 🤣 seriously though, have a super time 🌞
My daughters just started learning about henry the 8th at school, so probably going to take her for a day trip 🙂
Awesome idea! Gainsborough Old Hall would be good for that too
@TheWanderlustWayisback thank you 🙂
Thanks, Claire. im definitely sceptical about the paranormal, but it definitely fascinates me, and im open-minded enough to believe it's a possibility. Also, when the lights go out, it is one of my favourite underrated films 🙂
I think we should have an air of skepticism otherwise we'd be believing everything so its a good way to approach it 👌 yeah some of these low budget british films are often better than the Hollywood ones!
The only man ever... who went into the houses of Parliament with genuine intetentions
I think a lot would agree with you...
I've said it before. I'll say it again. Hopefully I can come over and visit one day
I'm sure you will 🛩
Love the lil corgi dogs in each room. I'd stay in the petty offices room & sleep on the bottom bunk if the sea got bit choppy lol. Really interesting info, thanks. Haha is that what the queen used 'BOLD' washpowder. Xx
Those corgis were everywhere! Also I agree, those bunks were in a very handy position - just a short stroll from the bar 🤣 Yep BOLD is what she must have used - perhaps they should have used Daz though..maybe then the washing wouldn't have turned blue 😆
Subscribed....Great Channel..good luck 😊😊😊😊
Thank you 😀
Super cool!!!
I always thought he was arrested in Long Sutton, Lincolnshire.
Ooh thanks I'l have to look into that
That's a wonderful video; I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the rich history of North Yorkshire, particularly its fascinating monoliths, burial mounds, and cryptid tales.
Thank you so much - I'm glad you enjoyed it, I hope to do some more videos like this soon 😀
Many thanks for this. It holds a special memory for me. I've never seen the grave but have visited the Knavesmire gibbet site. That was on a walking break where I stayed at the racecourse centre, 27 years ago this very week. I asked one of the ladies from the group out... and we're still together after all this time. Wow !! that's staying power for you !!
Hi Frank - thanks for watching and good for you 👏 indeed I bet York holds some very special memories ❤️ congratulations to you both ❤️
Brilliant Video, loved it. Dick was hanged for horse theft, he wasn't charged for being a highwayman
Thank you and yes you're right - horse theft carried a death penalty if my memory serves me right 🤔
I thought this was brilliant ❤
Wasn't it just 😮
