Just a short intro video for my channel. Not great but seems to get the point across... Sorry for the crappy audio, I'll try to get that fixed ASAP! Huge thanks to Geoff of Gas Masks & Hand Grenades (www.youtube.com/@GMHG777/streams) as well as Eli of Dark Hymns From The Cold North (www.youtube.com/@darkhymnsfromthecoldnorth) for having me on as a guest before I did anything myself. Check out t...
You have a gas station that sells CD’s ? Wow im in CA, that hasn’t happened since the 90’s haha Nice Immolation! just bought Harnessing Ruin on CD, hasn’t come yet… nice list🤟🏼
Thanks! Yeah I'm in a town of 600 people and both of the 2 gas stations still sell CDs haha. By CA do you mean California or Canada? Harnessing Ruin is one of my least favourite Immolation albums but still absolutely killer! Such a consistently awesome band.
@ California, Dead to Me is a favorite 🤙🏼
@@runsnhoses Cool. Honestly I need to go back and listen to some of their albums again, I tend to put on the first 5 more than the rest. Thanks for the reminder!
Well done man. Great answers and a few new to me to check out. 🤘🏻
Awesome, that's what it's all about! Thanks so much for watching. Cheers 🤘🤘
Brilliant video friend! I'll have to give that Immortal album a listen ⚔️ New sub too 👍
Thank you very much! Glad to hear I could steer you towards a new discovery, that's what this community is all about 🤘🤘
Great to see you back on the screen Erik. Great response. Obliveon is great. Was a bit disappointed with the Floga vinyl reissue of From This Day Forward, it does not sound as good as the cd from Awakening. Cheers. 🤘🤘
Thanks Roger! Too bad about the Obliveon reissues... I almost picked those up but decided to grab the CDs instead, guess I made the right call. Will be interesting to hear their new album, it's supposed to drop this year if all goes to plan. I'm curious if it'll be a return to the early sound or continue in the groove metal direction of the last couple albums (which I'm not a huge fan of). Cheers!
@@psychicvacuum555 I sure hope they go back to the earlier days. Nobody likes groove metal right?
Haha I can take a bit of that once in a while if it's done really well, but I'm never happy when a great extreme metal band decides to go that route.
Awesome man! Thanks for doing the metal tag. Really enjoyed your answers and diverse batch of stuff you showed off! Take care.
Thanks Marty, I hugely appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment!! Cheers 🤘🤘
I have heard and seen Camel Cds in the local shop but never have listen to them. I will check them out. A bunch of stuff I do not know but I will look them up, I do know Tommy by the Who. The movie is awesome. Great video
Thanks man! Yeah I love Camel, not sure if you're into 70s prog stuff but if so those first 4 albums are mandatory, in my opinion. I'm a big metal head but also a fan of a lot of music in general... I love Tommy (the album) but haven't seen the movie yet, will have to do that. Might even watch it tonight actually. I picked up a copy of the Quadrophenia movie recently but haven't gotten to it yet. Have you seen that one? Thanks for checking out my channel, much appreciated!
@@psychicvacuum555 I haven't seen it but I will look to see if it is available online. I dig 70s prog but I honestly only know the big names. I would definitely like to know more bands that play that awesome genre'. I love all music, there is not to many genre's I do not like. Music is my favorite thing. I am more of a metal head but one of these days I will open up the book to my collection.
Same here, not sure where I would even be without having music in my life. Camel is definitely a "2nd tier" kind of band within prog rock... it's another one of those styles like most metal subgenres where there is basically an endless supply of good bands once you start digging into the underground side of things. Pretty sure I have you on Instagram, I can send you a few recommendations over there if you want.
@@psychicvacuum555 hell yea. Sounds great. And honestly I'm more of a 2nd Tier guy anyways. I love those type of bands.
Yup. Gotta love the artists who know they won't break into the mainstream and therefore don't try... In other words they do what they want instead of trying to appeal to the masses by watering things down.
Great video! I’m glad I found it. I’ve been nosing around the Montreal metal scene to one degree or another since 1989. I saw Obliveon open for Death (“Spiritual Healing” tour) among many other bands. They always played amazing live shows. I interviewed Martin Gagné in 1992. Wonderful guy, no joke. He said their main influences at the time were Voivod, Slayer, Sacrifice, and Rush. He also referred to the label that released “From This Day Forward” as “Inactive Records.” . I agree with the comparisons to Coroner (one of my all time favourite bands) and “Human” era Death. I think what held them back was that they were never quite as heavy as other bands that got all the press at the time. Swedish and Florida death metal was just too big and while you’d think a massively differentiated band like Obliveon would stand out, the press didn’t give them a chance and neither did the labels. Meanwhile, more balls-out super-ultra-heavy bands like Kataklysm and Cryptopsy (another old favourite of mine) definitely got noticed. I’m happy for Cryotopsy and absolutely proud of how well they’ve done but I feel bad Obliveon didn’t get caught up in it all. . On the topic of pronunciation: locals usually pronounced the band’s name “awe-bliv-YUN!” but their manager at the time pronounced it “oh-BLEEV-ee-un.” You could almost tell who was a “true” fan of the band by how they pronounced it! The more casual folks who only saw them do openers would use the English pronunciation.Their hometown (which is actually the home town of only a couple of the guys), Longueuil, is pronounced “lone-GAY.” (The “O” in the first syllable is nasalized and sounds closer to a short “U” sound.)
Very cool to hear from someone who was there at the time; definitely wish I could have seen that show too! That list of influences makes total sense to me, and I agree it's unfortunate that they got lost in the sea of extreme bands coming out at the time. Like you said, they were maybe just not quite heavy enough to be included in the death metal scene, but as much as I love a lot of those bands too, I think Obliveon's songwriting chops were on a higher level and they definitely deserved more recognition. I have heard more people mention them in the last couple of years but still not enough in my opinion, which is why I wanted to highlight them! Glad their albums have finally been reissued, I will need to pick those up soon. Thanks very much for watching! Cheers 🤘🤘
Great pick ups camel is a great band 😀🐸
Absolutely! I haven't listened to their entire catalog yet but I've enjoyed almost everything I have heard, those first 4 albums especially are amazing. Thanks for watching!
@@psychicvacuum555 I subscribed to your channel and will check out your other videos
Lots of great pick ups. Camel and ELP very good albums. Take Care!
Thanks for watching! First album I've got from each, hoping to get more from both bands soon.
Do you think the Doors were influential on prog bands of the 70s? I could see it.
With the big presence of keyboards as well as the way they incorporated bits of jazz, classical and other experimental stuff into their music I'd definitely say they had a big influence. As with a lot of genres, it's a blurry line between psych and prog, at least to my ears. I think you can hear the foundation being laid in their stuff, along with bands like The Moody Blues, Procol Harum, Hendrix and The Beatles. Thanks for watching! I need to catch up on some of your stuff. Been watching a lot of movies myself lately too.
Awesome update! Nice to see Incantation, Faith No More, Bathory, Alice Cooper, Dismember and Nine Inch Nails.
Yeah, definitely glad to have all of those, even the ones I haven't heard yet. Thanks for watching! 🤘🤘
Nice shirt dude, good to see you back ...got some good stuff there bro !!!
Haha thanks!
Damaged Inc said you Stole his idea.....why are you Stealing from Special Needs channels?
When/where did he say that? Ryan is a great guy, I would never intentionally take an idea from him (or anyone else for that matter) without giving credit where it's due. At the same time, I can't keep up with everything that everyone has posted. As I said in the video, the first one I saw on this topic was Devon (Maze of Torment). I tried to find one on Ryan's channel just now but couldn't. My bad if he did one and I missed it.
Possessed Beyond The Gates was their best.
Hey, I can't argue with that. It's still a great album and massively underrated/overlooked!
master of puppets is easily the best metallica record, but no way can you rank kill em all higher
To me hell awaits was disappointing compared to show no mercy. I think show no mercy was slayers best album after that reign in blood.
I can understand that. I love both of those first 2 but they're definitely very different. I think I'd also take Show No Mercy over Hell Awaits.
I agree that Master of Puppets is the better album, but I still really like AJFA because I think it's more fun to play along with.
Cool, yeah there are still some absolutely amazing parts for sure. What instrument do you play?
@@psychicvacuum555 guitar
@@nmperdue4637 Nice. Yeah, there are some killer riffs on that album for sure!
Equilibrium lX was my first Emperor album that I purchased back in 1999. I always enjoyed it. I agree about Number Of The Beast. The first 2 Di Anno albums are my favorite. Actually I think Damnation was the first without Death Metal Vocals I think. I still prefer the death metal style of Opeth. I would agree about Beyond The Gates it's still a great album but definitely not as good as Seven Churches. I still really like Divine Intervention and played it alot back in 94 when it wasn't cool to listen to thrash. Great video Eric.
Thanks man! IX Equilibrium wasn't the first Emperor I heard but first one I bought. Good point about Damnation, I've always really liked that album but it was probably a disappointment for some people when it came out. I'm going to give Divine Intervention another spin in the next few days, it's still a good one for sure! Thanks for watching, I'll have to go check out some more of your videos that I've missed.
Number of the Beast in my opinion was always overrated. It's got a lot of great songs but to me it's a transition album and Piece of Mind is much better and the last classic IM release. After that the themes took over and while they were also awesome, I do prefer the first two and Piece over the rest. Sorry but Justice is Metallica's best release. It's not perfect but the vocals, the guitars, guitar harmonies and the drums sound awesome, but I am biased I been listening to it since it was released. And Dyers Eve is the fastest, heaviest song they EVER did. A worse follow up is the black album, it should have been brown. TURD. Slayers run starting with RIB, SOH and SITA would be hard to match. But I love Divine because it was a move away from the satanic imagery and music. The Satan schtick has been beat over and over by so many bands. It was nice that Slayer took a different direction on that release. But then they headed right back into it afterwards and all good but still a little stale.
I do like Justice but I can't see it ever rivalling Master for me. That said, I would have picked the black album instead if I owned it...
I bought IX equilibrium when I was 15 or 16. I could not make a lot outta it. It is experimental in a sense. I was not what I was expecting.
Has your opinion on it changed at all since then?
@@psychicvacuum555 Yeah totally. The guys from Emperor were trying to push the boundaries of the genre and that is commendable. They are creative guys who want to make the music they want. I love black metal and have since I was a kid, but the genre can be a bit dogmatic. A lot of people hated Stormkeep's Tales of Othertime because it sounded different. For me is a standout from the rest. I love that record.
@@franciscofeest6691 Awesome. Yeah I agree, personally I almost always enjoy when bands experiment with new elements and sounds; hence why Enslaved is one of my favourite black metal bands (not really black metal anymore but I'm sure you get my point). There are of course failed experiments now and then but I sometimes even enjoy those just for their uniqueness or strange charm. I should go back to that Stormkeep album, I really enjoyed it but it's been a while since I gave it a listen. Thanks for reminding me! Cheers 🤘🤘
#1 And Justice for All... Master of Puppets was their high-water mark. After Cliff's tragic and untimely death, that band was never the same.
...AJFA is the last one I care about at all besides a few decent songs on the black album.
Emperor - dont care IM - no! and killers is one of maiden's worst Kyuss - fourth album is their best Lamb of god - dont care, not metal Mastodon - not metal again Metallica - hmm. maybe, still better than the next one Opeth - dont care Manilla - you kidding me?! this is one of their best! Possessed - yes, I agree Slayer - yes, absolutely, but you went easy path here as DI is one of their worst
Thanks for sharing your opinions, that's all I'm doing anyway!
Cool idea for a video! Agree on Manilla Road for sure. I still dig Out of the Abyss, but ya it is a definite step down from the few albums that came right before it. I love the band, so hard for me to say too much negative about the album haha, but ya its not on the same level as the masterpieces that preceded it. Anyways, cheers dude!
Once I started filming this I realized most of these aren't really all that disappointing LOL! Just not as great as what came directly before. I really don't own a lot of stuff I actually dislike, which made it a bit harder. Thanks so much for checking out my channel man! Maybe you remember me from when you were starting out, I was using my personal account then (Erik Berg). Haven't had as much time to watch TH-cam stuff over the last while but I checked out a few of your recent videos. Glad to see you're having a good amount of success with the channel, you definitely deserve it! Gonna try to keep up a bit more in future, starting with your "Coast to Coast" series, that looks very cool! Also, check out Maze Of Torment if you haven't, he's where I snagged this idea from. His channel is great too (definitely better than mine 😂)! Cheers 🇨🇦🤘🤘💀
@@psychicvacuum555 Cheers man, thanks. Ya I remember you for sure! We used to chat on here quite often. I am the same way, I don't really own too many albums that I don't at least somewhat like. I am not familiar with Maze of Torment channel, but will check it out!
And justice for all is a great album your 🤪 lol. Now the black album is where they fell off.
No, it's a "good" album...I guess. At least compared to all the crap albums that followed, anyway. Master of Puppets was a GREAT album( and their last.)
I would say it's pretty good but doesn't quite reach "great" level for me. I don't own the black album, if I did I would have picked it instead!
You look like Lyanna Mormont from Game Of Thrones!🤔🤘

Yo dude you're slamming the content out finally bro 🤣😂Of all the people to respond to though.. Devon, for fucks sakes ?!?!??🤣🤣🤣 Welcome back (for now) dude !
Hey, well I ain't exactly gonna do a response vid to a 3 hour interview am I? 😂
Ayy Erik’s back! Good to see you man 🍻. Let’s see, the picks that I agree with are Mastodon and Opeth especially. I bought both of those albums the same day when they came out in 2011 and I tried really hard to like both of them. The Hunter is my least favorite Mastodon and truthfully I haven’t revisited Heritage in forever. The picks that I disagree with are your Iron Maiden and Metallica choices. I’m a huge Dickinson fan and though I acknowledge Number of the Beast is inconsistent and overplayed the high points make it a worthwhile record and probably a top 5 Maiden album. And Justice is Metallica at their heaviest imo, I also like how progressive it is. It’s my favorite Metallica album. Great video man, hope to see more!
Thanks man! Yeah I can totally agree with you that Number is absolutely worthwhile as the high points are damn high but it wouldn't make my top 5 😂 I'm actually going to revisit AJFA, it's been a little while since I played it and I do like it (I honestly still like all of these albums). Just not up to par with Master for me, which is hard as that was one of the first metal albums I ever heard! Thanks for tuning in, there will definitely be more vids coming up in the next few weeks. 3 at the very least! Cheers 🤘🤘
Right there with you with Number of the Beasts, and have been for decades. I think it just might be one of the top overated metal album, ever. It's a weak follow up to the amazing Killers, and a weak album compared to what Bruce would do with them after. That said, it's still very good.
Yup, I agree with every point you made! Thanks for watching 🤘🤘
Thx for the response dude. In fairness to emperor anything would be a disappointment to Anthems. Number is my 2nd least favorite of the 80s Bruce records but that’s not saying much. I havnt cared about lamb of god for over a decade but when I did Sacrament was the only record I listened to back to front (except descending that song’s horrible) when I was in the mood for them. I could be a smart ass and say master was a letdown after RTL. There’s a couple songs on master I don’t like. A modern one I almost Inclued was the last Gojira. I loved magma and fortitude is their first album I think kind of sucks.
Fair enough! Tbh it's been a while since I listened to any Lamb of God or Metallica as I've just had so much else to listen to, maybe I should have given some of their albums another spin 😂. I still think Master would hold up for me, but like I said part of it is definitely nostalgia. The 2nd and 3rd LoG albums were still great last time I spun them, As the Palaces Burn is definitely worth checking out IMO. Probably not gonna be anything mind blowing after already hearing a bunch of old school melodic death metal and whatnot but you might dig it... For whatever reason I only own a couple Gojira CDs even though I love them, so I couldn't have shown Fortitude anyway. Totally agree though, Magma was a bit of a letdown when it came out but it was a grower...I honestly only listened to Fortitude once but it basically did nothing for me, I'll give it another try one of these days but I thought it was boring AF so had no reason to revisit it until now. Thanks for watching man!
Ok, so there's still a lot of groove on that LoG album. I guess I still don't mind groove metal as long as it's done well. It can definitely get pretty lame sometimes but I think those 2 albums are some of the better ones in the style. Really it's a mix of thrash, groove, melodeath and metalcore I guess. I typically can't stand metalcore but they stayed away from the shitty whined choruses 😂
@@psychicvacuum555 yah anything resembling metalcore I hate. Unless it’s the early 90s “metalcore” like integrity or all out war.
@@mazeoftorment805 I've never even heard any of that stuff. Will have to check it out some day, I've heard good things. I'm guessing it's actually like what the name implies, metal mixed with hardcore...which is not what it's become in the last couple decades lol
@@psychicvacuum555 yah it’s not the emos stealing at the gates riffs like it was a decade later haha.
Just judging by the thumbnail now, you’ll have some different selection from Devon so it should be good.
What I like to most about your list, with the exception of the older stuff. A lot of your list is part of a period where I was listening to more hard-core punk. And I can draw the line in the metal journey-trajectory in a sense.
Cool! Punk in general is something I have yet to get very deep into but I know it'll happen some day. Some bands I do know are Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Bad Brains, Minor Threat and Fear but that's about the extent of my knowledge so far. Any recommendations for what to check out next?
@@psychicvacuum555 I’d have to give some thought. Maybe check out a few more of your other vids. But overall this was cool video. Great job 👍🏽 🤘🏽
@@jamesgwarrior1981 Thanks, really appreciate it! Stoked that you checked out my channel 🤘🤘
I like a ton of different stuff and I know there's a lot of punk I'd enjoy, just hasn't risen to the top of my list yet.
Just dropping this news... For those who would like to get these albums, they are being re-issued on CD in a few weeks by Awakening Records! 😉 And yes, the new album is indeed about to be recorded... The band is currently working on the final tweeking of the songs in pre-prod!
That's awesome to hear, I'll be looking into that right away! Thanks for watching and huge thanks for the update 🤘🤘
Great update Erik. Lots of good stuff from multiple genres. There is no shame on not having some classics in the collection. You pick them when you find them. I personally wait until I find them at at right price
Yeah, that makes total sense to me. Unfortunately it's rare to ever come across anything where I am which changes things! I'll generally do a bit of searching online to find the best deal I can if I really want something. Thanks for tuning in!
I just discover this channel by chance.I feel an unusual open mind on rock music . I agree. I come from another generation but I notice a lot of bands I also like. Voivod, K Crimson etc...I began with the Beatles, punk bands, the metal scene. From Rory Gallagher to Napalm Death I saw them live. Now I'm 65 and the story continues... Don't change anything, Good luck for your channel !
Wow, very cool! Living in a remote area I unfortunately haven't had the opportunity to see very many bands live yet. I like to think I'm pretty open minded, my favourite genres will probably always be metal and prog rock but overall I'm just a huge fan of music! Of course there are things I don't like much but I don't like to waste my time listening to them or discussing them. Thanks so much for checking out the video and taking the time to leave a comment with some kind words. Cheers 🤘🤘
Lot of good stuff you showed. Cool the 3 BOLT THROWER, BUDGIE, FAITH NO MORE, cool Motorhead editions with bonus tracks, Metallica etc.. So many.
Thanks! Yeah, kinda crazy to think I never had any Motörhead or Metallica but growing up in the middle of nowhere I've had to play catch-up. I'll check out some more of your videos soon, watched a few but don't think I got around to leaving a comment. Cheers 🤘🤘
@@psychicvacuum555 Cool. Thanks. Greatings from Spain.
That’s a hell of an update my friend… you’re back with a bang I’d say, lol! A really nice varied selection of styles on show as well! Good to see you Erik!🤘🏻
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! I'll definitely be trying to keep the length down in the future 😂. I need to play a bit of catch up with your channel, haven't had a ton of time to watch lately either. Cheers 🤘🤘
Lots of great death metal in this lot most of which I need to revisit as I probably only played them once or twice as I'm more a cd junkie collector than anything else. I need to start picking up some more 70s and 80s stuff as I do like my prog rock and heavy metal but I have to usually listen to the band/albums before I buy as there's so much I don't care for. The Earache reissue cds are definitely made cheap as chips but like you said it's about owning the music. Crazy that your local record store is the garage 😅 but fair play they get stuff worth buying. Supuration is a band I've heard about but don't own/never listened to. I also need to find time to start watching some of my dvds but as I haven't really watched any vc videos for the past few months I doubt I'll watch them anytime soon. Only just started getting Blut Aus Nord albums myself and I did recently get a Blue Oyster Cult album but I gave it to my uncle. I should revisit At the Heart of Winter as I thought it wasn't anything special but my music tastes have expanded a lot over the last 4 years. Manila Road is a band I've intended to check out. Most of the stuff outside of the death metal I've never listened to but a lot of it sounds like I'd probably enjoy. 🍻🤘🏻
Awesome! Yeah, the nearest city with a coupoe of actual record stores is a 2 hour drive one way so don't get up there much! Therefore I mostly order stuff online and generally pick up stuff I already know I like, so basically all of this is stuff I recommend checking out. As I mentioned I haven't gotten to a lot of the DVDs yet; it's more difficult putting time aside for those as you have to be both listening and watching whereas I can listen to music while I get other stuff done. Thanks for watching and commenting! Hope you find something you like if you decide to check any of this stuff out. Cheers 🤘 🤘
Good to see you Erik. A massive update, and a lot of killer albums. Of course, not so much into the prog stuff as you, so don't know all of these. Always nice to see Enslaved, and Mardraum is a heavy one for sure. And Bolt Thrower, about time yes, haha. 😂😂Immolation will always be my number one Death Metal act, so awesome to see a couple of their releases. Cheers. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thanks! Yeah, next time I do one I won't try to go through such a big stack in one go, it was a bit much haha. Immolation is absolutely a top 5 Death Metal band for me as well, some days #1. Definitely a lot more Enslaved I still need to grab, they have a lot of albums but every single one is worth owning in my opinion. Cheers and thanks for watching, now it's my turn to do a but of catch up on your channel!
They are not rumors anymore, their stuff is now available on Spotify and being re-leased on vinyl and cd. A new album is also on the way... Fun fact for the gear geeks: according to Pierre Rémillard (who also produced all Obliveon's albums), they drove from Montréal to Boston especially to buy a Mesa Boogie triaxis programmable preamp with a Mesa stereo tube power amp to record Nemesis. Pierre is a renowned sound engineer in Québec who produced countless metal and non-metal albums.
Yeah, I actually emailed the band a few months ago to ask about chipping in to help with the new album as the funding campaign had ended before I knew about it and received an update from Martin Gangé about the new album and re-releases which was very cool. Thanks for confirming that and for the interesting trivia, I love the guitar tone on Nemesis! Cheers 🤘🤘

Brilliant band man. No More White Horses, that song alone shouldve made them superstars! There was a comp came out in the mid 90s of Peter Duntons band Please, recordings from the late 60s. It has an earlier version of No More White Horses on it. Loved hearing your thoughts on this great band Eric. Cheers!
I agree, such a memorable song and easily could have been a big hit. I’ll have to check out the Please stuff one of these days! Cheers 🤘🤘

Yeah, they had such a cool and unique logo too! Thanks so much for subscribing! Cheers 🤘🤘
Cool video and pics. Do you have Darwin! from Banco?
Fantastic album (and band of course) but I don’t own it yet. I definitely will some day though! Their first 3 albums are all amazing. Thanks for watching!
Been listening to Obliveon since day one, still am. Technocarnivore is also amazing, seen them many times and killer shows. Even opened for Slayer in MOntreal, what a show. Even i am related from afar with Alain Demers the drummer through Christian Malette, killer guitar player too.
Awesome! Yeah I need to check out the last 2 albums one of these days. They’re working on a new one too, can’t remember if I mentioned that in the video. Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers 🤘🤘
@@psychicvacuum555 you didn't listen to Cybervoid? Man, go do it now!!!!!! Listen to the production on that one, amazing. Killer album.
@@framuscobra Will do. Is Trchnocarnivore a different band?
@@psychicvacuum555 no it is the last album that did. Technocarnivore Mother mouth.
My bad, I did actually listen to Cybervoid a while ago but only once. I don’t think I was in the right mood for it at the time. I’ll have to go back and spin it again, along with Carnivore Mothermouth!
Great picks! I love seeing some outliers among the classics. Frances the Mute is incredible, I don't think The Mars Volta ever topped it. The title track was cut from the album due to length and it is worth tracking down if you haven't heard it. Hot Rats! I agree, Lumpy Gravy is sort of an interesting oddity but not that enjoyable to listen to. Cheers Erik!
Yeah, Frances the Mute (the song) is fantastic too! Hard to believe it was left off but it would have been a damn long album with the extra 14 or so minutes. I should probably go back and give Lumpy Gravy another listen one of these days, honestly don’t have a very vivid memory of it. Thanks for watching! Cheers 🤘🤘
