I was at this race. I’ve been to every 500cc MotoGP race at Laguna. When I watched the first practice session from the turn 9 bridge I looked at my friend and said “Kosinski is gonna win this race!” I’ve never seen anybody ride the wheels off of a 500cc machine like Kocinski did that day. I’ve watched Schwantz and Rainey since the early 80’s, but nobody rode as hard as Kocinski did that weekend. He was leaving darkies in Turn 9 from BOTH TIRES every single lap, every single session, that entire weekend. Every corner was a crash waiting to happen, but he hung on. Doohan was still injured, he wasn’t able to maintain the pace for the entire race. Kocinski was riding harder than anybody I’ve ever seen, and after Doohan faded (crashed’) he rode away from the pack. It was honestly and literally the most amazing ride I’ve ever witnessed in the 500cc class. Kocinski couldn’t be stopped that weekend. Nobody has ever rode a 500 that hard for an entire race and come away with victory. It was amazing!
