20:32 You get used to it. :-)
Way to flip the narrative when the situation changes. Fun video to watch.
Great job! I have a 2022 Bolt EUV and I have taken it on some long distance trips including a couple that were 1800 miles round trip. I like to say for me at least that it is both a pain in the butt but also kind of awesome. I really enjoy the challenge and the planning especially along the way. I think it is because it gives me something to do to stay busy. Now that SuperChargers are available to us, there are lots of options along my route. I typically don't drive more than 500 miles a day with hotel stops with overnight charging so each day only requires 2-3 charging stops. We own a gas vehicle that could make the trip but as long as there is time, I normally choose the Bolt. Mine has supercruise and I like the sound system so it is very comfortable.
It looks like you smashed in your bumper at the first charging stop.
Luckily that did not happen, but we did scrape the bottom a little bit!
Hello fellow Ohioian. We have a Bolt and Tesla. As a test we decided to take our Bolt, which is my wife's daily driver, from Akron to Cleveland over Christmas for a dinner. We hit Ashland as well and planned our dinner at a restaurant where we could L2 charge during dinner before heading home. That L2 made a big difference. We only had to make a short stop in Ashland again. Despite the weather in the low 20's we still eeked out 3 mi/kWh. My understanding is this software won't work with the 2017-19 Bolts as it needs TACC.
You were lucky to get basically full charging speeds on the first go. I wish there was a way trick the Bolt into pre-conditioning the battery in cold weather. I did ~500 miles in one day in our Bolt EUV going from Ithaca, New York to Central Ohio. It wasn’t terrible, but we spent a bit more time waiting on the car than I would have liked.
Interesting, I didn’t know there was Tesla charging station behind the Sheetz near me in Columbus.
I have an Ariya, it's a known thing that it will lock the port when you plug in. You just need to lock and unlock the vehicle a few times and it will override unlock the port. It's designed to auto unlock once you stop charging, but if you can't get charging started to begin with you can get stuck with it locked.
You are a true superhero for going out in the cold weather like his.
Thanks! There was definitely some shivering involved, haha.
Nice video. Great job on 8k miles on your car already 😄
Thanks! I just crossed 10k yesterday haha!
Cool to see these site visits! I noticed you use the term station and charger interchangeably when talking about the individual units and also call the whole site a station. So you end up saying something like you've driven to a station, plugged into a station, but the station is broken so you've switched stations and now the station is working so now let's drive to see the stations at another station.
Yup, gotta work on that 😅
Good video. However, one critique (and/or advice): you can't not film a site just because someone else is charging on it. Just film your side without filming them. Others do it all the time. Otherwise, it's not much better than you sitting at home describing your experiences. That's not going to get you a whole lot of views. If you want to increase your viewship, you have to film and show what you're doing and the place you're at, regardless of whether someone is there or not. As long as you don't film them, there should be no objections.
Thanks for the advice! I probably could have filmed and will try to do so in future, I'm just hyper-aware of how annoying it can be to have someone talking loudly to a camera right next to you with your windows down haha!
Thanks! I like getting sneak peaks of the charging sites being built.
Love the video! I’m in the Cindy area? What part are you from?
😂 smh
Just because you have a lot of something doesn’t mean it’s better
Your car can’t handle high voltage 😂❤😂 nor can Tesla support cars with high voltage. I don’t plan to sit at a Tesla charger all day
Dude, both Ionna stations in Ohio have been open since Friday and you still have posted anything on them. I’ve already been to the Springfield chargery twice.
I know, it's driving me crazy! Unfortunately, I had prior arrangements over these last few weeks, but will get back to my coverage of chargers in the Midwest, and Ohio in particular, as soon as I'm able!
Since this is an older video, I’m guessing you didn’t have Autocharge setup on EVGo yet
Correct. I tried off-camera, but for some reason, I still can't get the car to enroll in AutoCharge. I'll probably give it another try this week, since it really is quite convenient when the AutoCharge does work.
Was that sheets on east or west side of Springfield? I didn’t know they look like they are almost ready.
@bobkoch3513 I believe it's to the northeast
So did the IONNA in Ohio opened today, Dec 27th?
According to IONNA, it did! Unfortunately, I was not able to make it due to prior engagements, but I plan on making a video in the coming weeks where we visit every IONNA open and under construction in Ohio.
@MidwestCharge Thanks. Looking forward to them. A few videos have come out on that and the PA site and it is indeed open.
Thanks! I'm hoping to become a semi-regular at the Springfield Ionna site, so it's nice to see a tour of it!
Crazy fun event. Great to cross paths with you too. I am thinking this memory will be long lasting as iONNA becomes a fixture in the coming years. Kinda like eating the first hamburger at the first McDonalds. Happy Holidays & thanks for the video.
Great vid and it was nice meeting you!
7:36 Your history is missing some details. Technically, J1772 was available all the way back to the late 1990s (my 1998 and 1999 Ford Ranger EVs both came standard with Avcon J1772), but it wasn't formally established as a standard until 2001. The current Yazaki plug format that is standard today was officially adopted in 2007. Also, in regards to the history for DC fast charging standards, Tesla was actually the third, though they started deploying sites about 6 months before CCS1. The CCS standard, though, was finalized a year before the Superchargers were built, and the first functioning 100 kW CCS1 prototypes were unveiled 6 months before the first Supercharger sites opened. Also, the West Coast Electric Highway predated the Superchargers by a year, and the first CHAdeMO DCFC were installed along the I-5 travel corridor starting in 2011. Tesla did provide a couple of novel approaches with their V1 Superchargers that included power sharing, which effectively doubled the stall count cabinet, and they daisy chained onboard chargers, which improved reliability, reduced handshake times, reduced costs, and allowed them to scale production very rapidly. The V2 used the same underlying design, but Tesla scaled up from 12 (IIRC) onboard chargers per cabinet to 14 onboard chargers per cabinet.
Thanks for the extremely comprehensive correction! Mine was but a layman's view of charger history, but I love learning the details from people who know their stuff!
@@MidwestCharge You're welcome. There's been a bit of revisionist history that was pushed for a while in an attempt to invalidate CCS. At this point, it's mostly academic. Tesla's plug format won out (smaller and moves most of the easy to break components to the car), and the CCS communications and protocols won out. Now it's just a chapter in the history of charging. Looking forward to more of your coverage!
Though mostly true, not everything is acurate. The CCS standard was NOT finalized before the first Superchargers. The proposals had been made, but the discussions were still going back and forth with no end in site. In fact, it had been barely demonstrated and nothing more by that time. It wasn't until Tesla was well into it's first deployments of superchargers when they finally came to a final agreement on the CCS standard. Tesla was not willing, nor could afford to wait any longer, and established its own standard and went ahead with it.
@@junehanzawa5165 The CCS standard was proposed in Oct 2011 and officially signed off on and endorsed in May 2012. The first Superchargers were deployed in September 2012 after Tesla had sat on the CCS development panels. CCS was literally and figuratively established first, but Tesla did implement their standard first. Tesla rarely innovates, but they do act on new ideas sooner/first. DCFC standards are no exception.
@newscoulomb3705 The CCS standard was tested in 2012, but was not finalized until 2013 when the CharIN initiative came into the picture. And even then, in 2013, BMW was the only one to install a single CCS 50kW small station in Germany for its upcoming i3 which was to be released in 2014. It was adopted by the EU in 2014 using the CCS2 standard there. It wasn't until 2016 when VW and BMW completed a small CCS1 network in America consisting mostly of 50kW chargers that were far and few in between. Especially outside of California. And it wasn't until 2018 when EA installed it's first 150kW CCS1 charger in America. The first fully electric vehicle to be able to be driven across America with any reasonable time somewhat comparable to an ICE vehicle was the Model S in 2013 due to its network.
Shout out to The Nework Architect Channel, EVchargerReviews, and Tech Motoring! It was great to meet so many new and familiar faces!
Interesting trip to ride along with, thanks Antonio. Do you typically hang out in the car during charging or was it just that the timing here meant nothing was open?
I usually find somewhere to hang out for a few minutes, but I thought (incorrectly) that the Starbucks was closed at the first stop in Tifton, and I actually did go into the convenience store in Ashburn, but after all the troubles with getting charge started, I wanted to keep a close eye on the charging haha!
@MidwestCharge I hear that! Thanks again for the useful travel info.
Nice to see that there is room to the right of the rightmost post in Hilliard.
Great to see Jeffersonville working and reasonably priced. Looks like it went offline again shortly after this but shouldn't be long. Thanks for the look around this and other Ohio sites.
Junk
Can you reverse the image so that it doesn't look like you're driving a right-handed car? I enjoyed the video thanks. Best wishes on your channel.
To be honest, I'm not sure, but I'll see what I can do with some of the future videos!
Lake City, Florida; the home of Fu King Chinese! My father lived there for a spell, so I always enjoy seeing someone from the area either online or in person! :)
Great videos! What do you think of the stalkless model 3? I dunno if I can get used to it. I have a 2022 model 3 long range
Thanks! It was an adjustment but I don't like the set up any less than a more traditional turn signal/shifter set up. Once I realized the turn signal button location is similar to a motorcycle, it clicked for me. Nice, got the goldilocks M3LR! Big batt, Ryzen infotainment, USS option, heat pump, etc. Edit: I just realized I know you from your PlugShare check-ins!
@@MidwestCharge no way! Which station have we used together? 😂 I always make sure to leave a review to help other drivers .
@shansadventures1 Basically every DCFC in the Dayton area, especially the ChargePoints. Always glad to see your reviews!
@ I only go to the free chargers 😂 😂 😂
Haha! Losing the free Cadillac DCFC in Centerville was a bit of a bummer, but at least they're open to EVs and the stations work 24/7
Damn, some teslas look like prototype cars
And some look like a child's triangle drawing!
@MidwestCharge haha, true
Do you have the LR RWD? That's great efficiency on your trip. Something is wrong with charging on your car. Very unlikely all the stalls were the issue. Have Tesla pull your logs while they are available.
Yes, I do have the LR RWD. Yeah, I'm pretty convinced it's my car but I need it happen again (not that I want it to!) so I can have them check the logs.
@@MidwestCharge Any other issues with your car? Been tempted to upgrade from my 2019 LR RWD to the 25 LR RWD. Test drove two Highlands and both cars had issues. One was a simple door rattle. The other car had a creak on acceleration, deceleration and hard turns. Searching suggested it was a body seam issue. Tesla build quality is luck of the draw unfortunately. Spent a lot of time correcting my car's issues and don't want to go through that again! But my battery, motor and electronics have been great. Good luck with the issue. Regards from another Buckeye.
Not really. I've been getting some bad condensation inside the headlights but that's unfortunately common, and fortunately, an easy fix, and the occasional creak from the plastic V in the steering wheel. My previous vehicle was a 2023 Model Y LR AWD and that car had issues galore with wind getting through every seal despite multiple corrections by Tesla Service, and lots of creaks and rattles, but this M3LR RWD has been pretty much problem-free, aside from the handshake problem I can't seem to duplicate, the headlight condensation, and that steering wheel creak that only happens below freezing. Overall it was a fantastic upgrade, but yeah, YMMV.
I wonder if GE would eventually buy out EVGO
We lived in Broward (FtLaud) for about a decade. Never got to freezing. Only north of WPB. Bummer bout the glitch. Makes for nervous road tripping till isolated, I guess. Hope it works out. That CirK TesSC at the end looked like a pretty sweet stop (panic mode besides). Thanks for the video. I enjoyed watching.
There were also Tesla supercharger version 1.5, there are still some in operation today. basically version 1 sites that were revised a bit to use more modern version 2 equipment.
J1772 is a very old standard was available in 2001 with the avcon connector max 6kw, even before the current modern connector (2009) you see today and revised in 2011 to support up to 19kw.
Thanks for the correction! I knew about J1773 with Magne Charge, but didn't realize J1772 had a life with Avcon before the current connector standard. The more you know!
Supposedly Ionna wants to go live on December 27th. I think the Willoughby, OH and Apex, NC should be online that day, but don't know about Springfield
I heard about that. Unfortunately, I won't be able to check on the chargers that day, but keep an eye out because there will be some exclusive coverage before the official launch coming soon!
Great video! thank you.
Hey there! We're uploading this extra video today in celebration of crossing 10 subscribers. We appreciate your support here at Midwest Charge, and look forward to giving you guys more of our best content as we evolve, bring this year to a close, and head into 2025! Hope you enjoy! 🎉
I love a good road trip vid. The GOM on Tesla is pretty fickle. Cold will make it go cross eyed. The Knox TesSC I’ve been to several times. There is a good pizza place in the strip mall behind it. Never been in a Buc-ee’s that was out. Quite a feat, that was. Your M3 is a beast. Great road tripping car. Thx 4 the video. I enjoyed watching
Thanks for the encouraging words! I was profoundly astonished to witness the shortage of brisket haha
@@MidwestCharge BTW, I called out your IONNA #2 vid on my latest update. You may see some additional foot traffic as a result. Wanted to let u know likely src is from over here.
Much appreciated, good sir
Super cool video. Love the accent lighting strip inside your Tesla. Really looks sharp. Nice pricing in Jeffersonville. For the Springfield one, word on the street is they will be adding a canopy too to that one, so probably next time you go through, it will be covered and open. Thx for the video. I enjoyed watching. Also subscribed to the channel.
Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for further updates to the Springfield site
Sorry about the audio from about 8:00 -15:00, no idea what happened to the mic!
The dumpster is new since I went to the Ionna site a while back. Hopefully a sign of progress
Indeed. I don't think it made the cut, but I spoke to the Sheetz employees, and they said it's supposed to be fully complete before spring. I'm not sure how accurate that is, though.
@MidwestCharge oh I should have clarified, I meant the one in Reynoldsburg 🙂
I like the Waffle House next door.
Your pronounciation of Ionna is really.... different. Thiink of the Ioniq 5, or someone named Ayanna.
Yeah, I realized afterward it didn't make much sense, thanks!
At the start of the video, your camera setup makes you look like you are driving in England. Otherwise this is a great video. Ionna is not pronounced like Iona college. It is pronounced like Ions. I had a girlfriend named Ayanna, so now every time I charge at an ionna location, I will remember her. At 19:49 you get to a place that should have been the Ionna station but was actually EVGO.
That makes sense, thanks for the pointer on pronunciation!
None of the Meijer Shell Recharge stations around Columbus work very well. They have bad UI that requires the user to not just activate through the app and plug in, but also press the start button on the dispenser. Add to that poor reliability and presumably a lack of spare parts, and you have a pretty mediocre experience. I was happy to see recently that Meijer signed a deal with EVGo to bring DCFC to many of their midwestern stores. Wouldn't be surprised if some of that old Tritium hardware gets ripped out and replaced, especially since the grid connection is such a big part of the initial cost.
I'd love to see these sites be converted to something like Out of Spec's XCharge unit or other battery-buffered DCFC, but I feel the sheer complexity of a FreeWire style solution would yield the same mediocre experience as these older installations. I'm sure the fact that Tritium appears to be out of business doesn't help matters either for these locations.
Shouldn't it be that when you have to use a screen at a charger, it has already failed muster for user accessibility? I have a tesla and am spoiled with charging easiness, but really the new chargers that are coming online are in clouds already and screen is painfully redundant and generally fraught with issues. Ideally, one should just be able to scan a qr code and pay with app with one click at at worst case or automatically do it Tesla does based on vin or something.
