Fostering a Growth Mindset in your students the right way: An SEL Masterclass
Many teachers acknowledge the power of teaching their students to have a growth mindset, but they don't know where to start. They also make the mistake of just saying, "just try harder" when kiddos get stuck, making the problem worse. In this video we'll dispel common teacher mistakes when teaching the growth mindset and give you a powerful framework of the 5 principles for teaching a growth mindset!
How to use this video: Show this video to all educators and leaders so they can develop a common language for discussing growth mindset. Educators join PLC-like groups (department or subject area) and decide which of the 5 principles they will apply first and try those strategies in their class so they can debrief how they went later. Teachers continue refining their practice with student and peer teacher feedback.
This video is part of a professional development series. For more information about our Mindset Mastery SEL Curriculum, teacher and adult SEL professional development, and other SEL services and programs, check us out at www.legacymasteryacademy.org

Classroom Management Tip #2: REFRAME MISBEHAVIOR: Don't get triggered by misbehavior EVER AGAIN!
มุมมอง 200ปีที่แล้ว
I always get asked by teachers, how do you not get triggered by misbehavior and remain so calm, patient, and kind with the toughest students? In our trainings teachers learn that it's not what your students do that gets you upset, but the meaning you assign to their behavior. Two teachers can experience the same behavior, and one takes it personally, gets stressed or angry but another will be c...

มุมมอง 70ปีที่แล้ว
One of the fastest ways to change student behavior is to transform a child’s identity. This method is actually more powerful than positive reinforcement. We know labels can be destructive, but what if they were used in a way that radically changes how a student sees themselves, others, and the world? Welcome to identity seeds, a powerful student behavior change catalyst. This channel provides p...

This video is amazing as it provides strategies on how to have success in the classroom as an educator. There are a lot of golden nuggets in this video, and my biggest takeaway is to learn how to reframe situations/events. As educators we are faced with challenges that most of the time have nothing to do with us; however, we have to be mediators and diffuse the issues that arise. Reframing allows you to be compassionate, and curious, and make better decisions when dealing with challenging situations.

I love the video, and I think you are absolutely amazing for making it. Thank you for making it! I am trying to be 90% the curious and compassionate teacher. I would say 10% I overreact and then refocus and apologize sincerely and ask for forgiveness. My problem is, a lot of students who misbehave tell me "my mom left me" or "my dad left me" or "I live with my aunt." Or "My dad is dead, and my mom works 2 jobs and doesn't even live with me" or "my mom hates me and her boyfriend told me to shut up. I often feel like punching him in the face". How do I guide or help these children? I understand why they misbehave. I understand the struggles they are going through. I cannot control their home lives. But I do have control over the classroom. Perhaps I can try a behavior chart and reward at the end of the week for each of the children. It still pains me to hear their experiences. What would you recommend I do?

Hi @MalwinaASL, I agree with you, this video is awesome! From my experience as an educator, being compassionate curious is a very powerful tool to have. One of the things that I like to do at the beginning of the school year is to establish meaningful relationships with my students and parents. That has always helped, although it can be challenging at times connecting with the parents. I am not sure if you have seen this video, Classroom Management Tip #1: Identity Seeds th-cam.com/video/2z7IbDJkpN8/w-d-xo.html. This video can also provide you with insight on how to support your students and help you as well.

Thanks 🙏 so much. I’m grateful for your response. It lets me know that the message is having an impact. I don’t have a perfect answer, but you’re already doing it. #1. You are perceiving their behaviors with compassionate curiosity, not judgment and defensiveness. #2. You are attempting to help them through positive reinforcement, which is powerful, and you won’t stop finding what works for your kiddos because each is different. I’ll just add, in addition, build relationships as Jose mentioned, inject identity seeds (see video) increase your one on one time where you build rapport (notice their effort, give constructive feedback, support and show them you care), and work with each student to help them experience success, because progress (growth) is the biggest human motivator.
