One-Row Buttonholes WITHOUT Turning Your Work!

In this video, I show you how to make buttonholes in one row without turning your work, as described in Elizabeth Zimmermann’s book, Knitter’s Almanac. This method of making buttonholes is easy, neat, and efficient. It’s also a great alternative to traditional one-row buttonholes. If you want to use this technique in a project, be sure to check out the buttonhole placement worksheet I developed...

Thank you for a great video !!! I am so glad I came upon your channel. It is the perfect technique to complete my cardigan 🧶😄
Awww, thank YOU! So happy to hear this video was helpful! ❤️
Talk about basic...
An absolutely wonderful tutorial 👏. Thank you so much for making everything so clear & precise 🤗. Also when joining in the round your management of the extra stitch is remarkable, as like you said it makes the joining in the round, completely invisible. You certainly get 5⭐️s from me!!! Thank you for taking the time to make this very helpful tutorial. Cheers 😍👏🤗💕❤️
So excited for that colorwork sweater! I might be already tossing the stash for sport weight yarns….. Also wanted to say I knit my sleeves for Meant to Vee on dpns and had no issues. I just put the cable panel on one needle and it worked fine 😊 I can’t wait for the cold weather so I can wear my sweater!
Really clear, deliberate tutorial. I appreciate your foregrounding some of the features of this CO, and pointing out the visual cues that help one 'read' one's knitting as one casts on. You are a great teacher -- just the right amount of information, no interjections off topic, and focused. Love this cast on, and you made learning it quick and memorable.
I love love love your kestra hat! 😍 Definitely need to make (at least) one of those. And your color work sweater is lovely. It looks like so much fun to knit, too! I can't wait to see the finished design. I'd also love to hear more about the nydia cardigan & pullover. I've been itching to make one, but need to clear some needles first. 😉
I absolutely need to make more Kestra hats! And what a pretty and clever detail to have inverted cables. Thank you for answering my question. Can't wait to meet you in person! 😉
Yesssss, totally! I love your blue and orange Kestra so much!! Looking forward to hearing how you decide to tackle the sleeves--and even more to meeting you in person! 🥰
It’s mind boggling the amount of detail and customization in this design. Great job Vanessa!
Aww, thank you Trisha! I was so excited to see how knitting the sweater bottom up made all of those options possible! 🤗
Yay!! So great to see you in another episode! 🤗 I absolutely loved our test knit group! I am so proud of each one of us and of course YOU! This is such a gorgeous knit with professional touches & finishes that make it a standout piece! Every time I wear it, people compliment it! 🥰 If you do another pattern discussion, I’d love to hear about the Nydia (cardigan and pulllover). 🤗 🏝️
😭🥹 You're so sweet to say these things, Siobhan; thank you. And you deserve all the compliments because YOU did a phenomenal job on it! I would love to talk about the Nydia tops! 🤗🏝🐾
Love the colors of your Kestra hat! 💜🤍
I knew you would!! #purpleloversunite 😁💜
I 💘 your color work sweater. Can't wait for the pattern. I will be purchasing several of your designs. Beautiful work.
Thank you so much, Julia! I really appreciate your kind words and support! 🤗
🙋🏻♀️. I can’t wait to get the Meant to Vee on the needles. I’m swatching to find the fabric I have in my mind. I love the Stars Hollow hat. The bling of the beads brighten the wintery days. It was fabulous to watch the podcast with a little beverage this evening ✨🧶🍷
👋🏼 Yay! What color are you trying so far? I agree--beads give such a nice little pop of joy during a gloomy day! Thank you for watching, Natalie! Sounds like a lovely evening 🥰
I love your colorwork sweater. I can’t wait to see the pattern. I’m interested in seeing your pattern modifications for shaping. 😊🧶
Thank you! 🤗 Isn't it awesome that we can make garments to fit our own unique shapes?!
@@VanessaSmithDesigns Yes! When you knit your garment can be exactly what you want it to be!
💯
Drop a 🏝here in the comments if you're familiar with the game I'm talking about, and let me know if I'll see you at Sacred Sheep in Portland, Oregon, on Saturday, November 2!
So you would you do this technique on all sleeves. thanks
Yes, typically! Especially if my sleeves feature a lace or cable stitch pattern with a row repeat, which mine often do. However, if you have a plain stockinette sleeve with only decrease or increase rounds, you may prefer the helical knitting method of alternating skeins. ☺️
Is there " yo "?
Nope, this method only uses bound off and cast on stitches. ☺
What needle size r u using and r u using the same size for the whole sweater??
In this video, I used the same needle size as for my ribbing, where I usually use .5 mm smaller needle than for the rest of the sweater. For this particular vest, I used size US 4 (3.5 mm) for the cast on and ribbing and US 6 (4.0 mm) for the body, but of course you should use whatever needle sizes work best for your yarn and pattern! Hope this helps! ☺️
I'm currently knitting a tee and will definitely be using this tutorial. Thanks sis! 💜
Yay, you're so welcome! I love that our timing always seems to work out perfectly! 🥰
Love the vest!
Thank you so much! 🥰
😍
🤗
Ohh nooo
Right?! 😭
I'm so excited to see you started a podcast! It's great to see you. I'm sad that I lost steam on the sweater and didn't get to test this, but I will absolutely be making the Bestie Vestie at some point! XOXO - J
Awww, no worries! Life happens and I hope all is well. 💕 I'll look forward to seeing your Bestie Vestie whenever you get a chance to make it! Thank you for tuning in!! 🥰
Awesome Work
Thank you! ☺️
I haven't had a chance yet to knit most of your patterns but a few years ago I fell in love with Sevrine and during a low time in my life that sweater made me feel beautiful. I've been favoriting your patterns ever since.
This means the world to hear, Alicia; thank you for sharing. 🥹💕
Thank you! I have always hated to swatch in the round because the swatch becomes totally useless when it’s cut.
You're very welcome! No more wasted yarn! 🥳🤗
Hello from Bonnie Scotland. I found you this morning on TikTok and said I would come right over to TH-cam. I marked it and that’s me now sitting down with my knitting in hand listening and enjoying your podcast. I’m loving it 😊❤

Do you ever add a flat simple button on the back of the button?
Nope, I've never done that! Would you use that button with the buttonholes instead, and then have the button on the front be more decorative?
