Bisti Badlands - Light Painting Location Check 013
It's been on my list for F..ing ever and now I finally made it to the Bisti / De-Na-Zin Wilderness Area in New Mexico as part of my most recent photography trip.
In the past years, I have been photography with friends in the US when meteor showers hit the strongest. So I was traveling to the US again in the summer of 2022 and decided to also pay a visit to the Bisti Badlands. As you will see it was absolutely worth the 8-hour detour.
Walking into the area I have seen multiple fabulous photo opportunities just the first ten minutes into the hike. Specifically for light painting, photographers tend to appreciate not too big formations, because one can easily light them up. This is perfect here at Bisti.
Because of a thunderstorm coming into the very region I was in I only got to shoot one of the three spots that I had planned to spend some time with. The good news is that I will have to go there again and feature the remaining parts. Stay tuned.
Here you will see some highlights of the scenic route I took, you'll see some impressions of the area, and some drone footage to enjoy. Through this, I hope you get an idea of what to expect when you plan your visit.

What's in my Bag(s) - What a LightPainter packs in its bag.
Good friend and epic LightPainter Sven Gerard from Lichtkunstfoto.de shared what's in his bag and ask me what's in mine. That got me thinking. A lot of thinking. A lot of questions went through my head (very effective procrastination technique not to get the post done by tomorrow). The first question was like: What bags, which bag? Define bag? A bag means you want to carry something somewhere. ...

Use Reflection in your Photos

Interesting video but why the inane music spoiling the content?
This would have been very helpful if there was a list of the names of each flashlight. It's impossible to identify most of them but this quick video.
Hello! An amazing tutorial, I'm already looking into getting a brush myself and trying this out! One question I have - with what settings does the image show up like that on the computer? Like in the middle of the process? I would love to know!
Hello! Amazing technique! Please, is it possible to have that live view with canon cameras?
Okay so how do you do it with no flashlight…
Omg love it there so much❤
Since when are you allowed to fly a drone here. Its illegal
Hi can you add links to the different flashlights you use or but down the model names ect Thanks
That’s a great idea for focusing, never thought about zooming while in live mode… thank you for that great suggestion!!
nice video
please make more videos and explain to more details how you got finly pics
Arid areas full of surprises, much life everywhere, art in rock formations superb!
Hello! I have to do a little job with lightpainting but I can't unlock this issue, help hahaha!! In this video, I see how hand in hand that you paint the effect appears on the monitor, how do you set the camera? I have the Nikon 810, I tried to put it in live view but when I press the shutter it goes all black and you can only see the result when you close it again... finished photo...
Some exquisite photography here.
Glad you like it. Your support is super welcome!
I could spend days just photographing the rock structures! The desert definitely has its own beauty.
For my next trip to the area, I will explore more of this and hopefully get more cool shots.

At the best, you can illuminate 💡🔦🕯️🔋🪫🔌 the whole building overnight, that you get night views from. A beautiful idea, using the LED rope light 👍. You can run and operate inside the building radio station, restaurant, and hotel 😴😴😴😴😴🤓

Great gear stuff ! Good selection. Do you have a special case for the torchlights ?‘
Thanks for watching. I used to have a little Peli case perfect cut outs for each light, but then it started changing what I actually take on a Light Painting trip. So nowadays I normally use a small bag with a zipper and pack 5-10 different lights depending on where I go. When I come home all my lights are dumped in my backpack anyhow. Thats because if I want to leave its usually fast ;-)
@@gunnarheilmann7135 I see similarities there. towards the end it always goes back quickly and the backpack looks completely messed up. 😂 lol painter fail
thankyou thankyou~ ^^
You are very welcome! Hope you find your lights.
"don't go slow" I could definitely confirm that. 😉
With a little luck I get to go this year again .. may be Moab this year ..
Sehr coole Lokation! Tolle Bilder!
So cool. Freu mit wenn jemand das erkennen kann ;-)
Gunnnar-thank you.interesting !have a good day!
Glad you like it.
Schön geworden 👍
Jaaaa ...
Where can I find these conectors?
Super easy: lightpaintingbrushes.com/ You find lots of stuff there. There are two major shopes depending on where you are located. If you are in europe you can also look at lightpaintingparadise.com/ different tools.
Excellent work and fantastic results. I have had help from fire performers. Can you explain the sword you used ? Kevlar rope set on fire ? I like your consistent flame effect. I am having diffiiculty keeping a consistent flame. Do you have any suggestions ? appreciated .
Hey David, glad you found the video. I apologize I did not see the comment so quickly. Anyhow yes, Zack used a Kevlar rope tide around an aluminum stick. He ordered it online somewhere. I did the same and use it until this day. You can see that on my website in the Fire Light Painting section. gunnarheilmann.com/portfolio/light-painting-with-fire/
My question is if you have any lenses your tired of will you let me have them lol 😂
That's just awesome I wish I could afford the equipment I only make like $800 a month and can't find any place with payments low enough to afford all I have is a Canon rebel T7 with a micro lens like 55mm I think and a Telephoto zoom lens 75-300mm I think idk not digging it out right now to look lol got it on the QVC website with payments no credit check but with the monthly payments that was don't one I could get wish I can get lenses and equipment like you have
You can do most of the stuff easy with standard equipment. I aquired so much gear over many more years, since this is my passion for sooo many years. When you know you stick with it and have the time and space to do so its worth it.
Oh I'm Melissa BTW 😁
Thank you for stopping by Melissa - Glad you like my work.
That's great I found you :) be sure add your Viewbug on here too
What is the big open book on the table at the end of the hall?

Nice work Guys.....Love seeing Zach's and Julie's work..........just subscribed
I think i have to put out more videos on a regular basis. Thank you for your interest! Sorry I missed that ;-)
Hi Gunnar, I hope you're doing well. I would really like to watch your video, but sadly we can't hear your voice. ;) Greeting from Quebec, Canada.
Looks like concrete. not real stone.
Yes thats right. Its a man made structure and not natural granite rocks erected by man
Nice!
Hee, ist ja richtig Cool!
Freut mich wenns gefällt - kann man mal nebenbei laufen lassen ;-)
still good to see you continue lightpainting man :)
Not so much lately - I go a lot through my archive and finally get around to sort all of it and show what's never been out. I am looking forward to getting myself a new camera and after this COVID Madness, I really hope to get out and shoot again much more. Cant be long anymore ;-)
This is great fun Gunnar! I would like to try it someday...
It was super cool. We are planning a few more session in the tunnel. Lets see what we can come up with. I will then update my blog post on my website if more cool stuff comes out of the next shootings.
How do you rotate the camera? I`ve been looking around. Great picture.
You need to get yourself a Camera Rotation device - or build one yourself. I have a picture on my blog. gunnarheilmann.com/camera-rotation-light-painting/

Thank you so much - Makes me proud to see that you all find it interesting. Thank you for the comment it's supper helpful.
@@gunnarheilmann7135 I know how it feels when getting no feedback (even when it's bad) ;) !
Amazing tutorial, so detailed . Thank you!
Thank you Ofir - Glad you liked it. Would love to see what you come up with - tag me or send me a mail with your results. Greetings from Berlin!
Tipps??
Ich habe nur das Canon Teil ausprobiert und da muss man an der Kamera nix machen - was du im Video siehst ist was ich gemacht habe. Nix weiter.
what software did you use sir?
I just connected the Olympus to the screen. What you see is a built-in function of the camera. super cool to teach and learn. Normally I don't use that when I actually take photos.
Too much talking ... Just a lot of gibberish.. waste of time
Thanks for the feedback - you can turn off the sound if you don't need that - I do that too and I won't take t personally. No worries.
It's looking perfect. I will also try next time
Thank you so much. Your compliments are very much appreciated and super welcome and motivating. Keeps me going.
Challenge accepted 😬 super cool exercise that you can implement later in location. helpful tips also for advanced users.
I am super curious about what comes of it. Please keep me updated.
