this game already a Legend they dont really need Marketing and Tynan is always vanish for 1-2years then new expansion pop up out of nowhere hahaha
18:30 As someone who owns all Rimworld expansions and Star Citizen: the constant creation of in engine promo material that simply can’t be achieved in game is a big part of why I stopped supporting SC.
Very interesting and useful talk. I appreciate you sharing.
My only reason to love sandbox game as long it includes some war crime in it. And rimworld hitting all the checkmark for me, such as butchering human and creating human leather cowboy hat. It was fun but you are punished with mood debuff. That until ideology dlc come to play where you set your colonist belief, meaning you can build a colony without limited by inhumane act such as slavery, skull spike, robbing other camp and converting people to your belief.
I hate how to sees the art i love as a cash cow. She doesn’t know what makes it good. If it didn’t sell well she wouldn’t think rimworld is good. She feels evil.
This is the second time this account posted the same comment, word for word, to the same video. Is this an actual person or is this a bot? It feels like a bot.
I hate how to sees the art i love as a cash cow. She doesn’t know what makes it good. If it didn’t sell well she wouldn’t think rimworld is good. She feels evil.
I don't see what's wrong with getting compensation from people willing to give it for making the art. Continuing a success is how they fund more ventures. And yeah if it doesn't sell well then clearly people don't want it. You can't expect artists and developers to just cater to niche audiences and visions with little support.
The art you love is made by artists who need to eat, have places to live, go on vacations, pursue hobbies, and all the things that make lives worthwhile. Marketing itself isn’t good or evil-the artists do need to earn a living. It’s all down to the strategies they use. They emphasize being honest in their advertising and building organic support by delivering what their players want. Imo, that’s ideal.
Im surprised she didn't talk about mods much at all. considering that's the sole reason the game was kept alive for so long.
For real, Oskar is the best employee they have
They don’t sell or market mods, so I think that would be pretty out of place.
Mood: +10 "Watched an informative presentation about Rimworld's marketing.
of course ambigiousamphibian is there! I started playing the game a while ago because of him
Very interesting
A man built this game alone. The marketing came after success. Why is she talking about this game? We want Tylan!
It’s a presentation on marketing? He hired her to do marketing, so she’s the one doing the marketing presentation. This is such a weird question
Very good video! 😊 I remember Tia's first post in reddit and I found it very interesting. All the weekly updates for the last expansion that she did were very good and keep the community engaged! As an argentinian, I saw very close the situation with the regional prices.. It was very sad that a lot of people with vpns were taking advantage of that. As Tia said, this was a problem for a lot of games. After some time, Steam implemented a way of checking the credit cards, so to buy in Argentina now you need to have a credit card from there. Also, the prices are not in local currency anymore, now are in USD, so you avoid the problem of having the prices of the expansion higher than the base game. But I hope developers keep taking into consideration Steam's regional prices, because it is true that a game costing 25 usd can be 10% of a salary. And now, it is not so broken as in their beginnings. Congrats for all the work done, to Tia and Ludeon!
It was fascinating getting a peek behind the scenes. Excellent presentation!
Go Tia, go love it
Thanks for being so informative 🙂
Really good video, I wish it was slightly longer
Whoa it's the guy!

Join us in person December 11th for the final VGDS event of the year! We'll be having Q&A's with Clara Sia from Devolver Digital and Noel Berry from EXOK! Tickets available at bit.ly/vgdsdec2024
It sounds like a young team with a young product, so where does the confidence in "Future-Proof" come from? The points mentioned focus explicitly on the opposite: Getting stuff done in the short term. Don't get me wrong, though, it's a great talk!
Great talk! Is Isadora's other talk about OOP available somewhere? She mentioned it at 30:20
That talk was organized by our friends over at Full Indie. The talk was recorded but still needs to be edited, so it should go up on their channel in the coming weeks!
I am just starting out in game dev. This really helps me understand more of the process rather than just laying out code.
Amazing talk! Thank you so much for sharing all these awesome content, cheers from South America!
Basically you just described Unreal Engine 3 through this entire video. Unreal Engine 3 stood the trial of time. It supports widest range of API from DirectX 9.0c DirectX 10 DirectX 11 DirectX 12 and all versions of Vulkan within the same time period. It also went through 32 bit only support to 64 bit throughout its entire lifecycle. Unreal engine 3 also the first game engine that supports early 2000s screen resolution up to 4K resolution. Unreal Engine 3 have the best optimization when compared to Unreal Engine 4 & 5. It is proven by countless successful games under Unreal Engine 3.
While owning your own technical stack is something that everyone should prioritize specially beginners and the overall message here is nice, I found it very sad that most programmers preach ECS and OOP like the way to do things
What... what's the alternative to OOP and ECS? Functional programming?
@@sain11 the alternative is just writing the simplest code possible without thinking of making abstractions before you even have solved any issue at all
@@javierecf It depend on the scale of your project imho. If you are shipping regularly small games yeah maybe investing a lot of time in a robust, time proof, tools may be not that relevant as in a long term game development where taking the time to maybe what so said "over engineering" tools make more sense.
@@javierecf That's kind of a vague reply. I think you need to expand on what you're specifically talking about. I would guess you're talking about procedural programming with pure C, or something along those lines?
@@TheLivingShred No at all, I specifically avoided specifying any kind of "programming paradigm" or language precisely because is unnecessary, you should not be thinking on solving hard problems by preemptively thinking of abstract concepts in your code, you should be thinking about manipulating your data in the most efficient, simplest and performant way possible, if that solution requires abstractions sure use them, if they require functions use them, you do as much as is needed to solve a hard problem not a bit more, otherwise your are adding complexity to your problem before even the problem is solved. Also I would also like to refer to point #9 of the presentation, even this comment right here may not be useful to you, don't take my word or anybodies, try it yourself and you will understand what I'm trying to convey on your own.
Great talk! I think a lot of devs underestimate the value of this process. This is exactly the same method I teach to my students when I train them from zero game dev. Actually I go a little bit further, I prefer they clone well known games, they can relax the design side of things and focus on the actual programming. Understanding how the decouple the code is crucial to develop their future career journey.

I got to see this in person. glad to see they have the archive up, its a really great talk!
Celeste is one of my favorites platformers of all time - bought it for switch, PS4 and steam lol. I was as indie developer really inspired by the game and saints11 tutorials helping a lot. Its really im impressive that you now have direct aseprite support inside the engine. 26:03 interesting point regarding the sizes - i realize very late that if you have a 16x16 character in a 16x16 world it might looks bad. Celeste has a 8x8 tileset and the character is around the double height so that is important to know i think. After i changed this style it looked much better.
Hope pony island 2 pops off after he got Geoff’s number
Wow TH-cam recommended me something I view as a gold mine. This is awesome!
The Geoff comment is so funny now that the announcement has been made and after the arg happened. I am so excited to see what is next! I fell in love with Inscryption after seeing a favorite twitch streamer try it for a 24 hour stream. I stopped watching because i had to play it. After completion i fell in love with the hidden lore and arg, i was one of those second hand people who woulf watch video after video about how the community solved things with Inscryption and then eventually with Pony Island and The Hex. And recently i got to witness the community solve the arg that lead to the reveal video. Again, very excited to see anything he has cooking, love his work and all the work around his games he puts into it
😻 *promo sm*
