Perception Kayaks Outlaw 11.5 - recorded at Twin Lakes Park in Columbia, Missouri

This is a review of my first fishing kayak. I hope this helps with researching a kayak if your interested in purchasing one. A couple reasons I chose this kayak: wide enough to stand on, lots of room, apparently comfortable seat, rod holders, track mounts. Some things I'm impressed with: COMFORTABLE SEAT!, side and under-seat storage, cargo space in front and back, Made in the USA, good trackin...

SHAD 3P and SH23 Installation on CBR650f
มุมมอง 18K5 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I show how to install the SHAD 3P System and the SHAD SH23 hard bags on my 2014 Honda CBR650f. All items were purchased through RevZilla. I received no compensation for the opinions expressed or products shown in this video.
Like the transom mount, did you glue it or bolt it down??
Got a full length video of how you set up the trolling motor and fish finder?
Where did you get ammo boxes at? Nice idea??
Could you please let me know what max speed you are reaching. Thank you
I would love to see what you came up with for the swivel seat as I had the same idea. I borrowed the idea from the pelican catch pwr 100 and even bought the same ergo 360 seat and swivel base and fabricated a base out of aluminum rods.
Thanks for great informative video ! I have a question : Overall are you happy with outlaw for fishing ? How do you transport that ? ( on top of the car ) Many thanks in advance .
Do they fit a 15 to 17 inch laptop(bag)?
Peaceful
How much is the motor ? Around 400$
😂try less than 1/3 that.
Thanks man. I'm learning more about engineering from kayak mods than from college.
I hope you still have your perception rear not cracked. I did not see where you put extra support under the Trac on the inside to help spread the stress when you have your motor mounted to it to keep the Bolts or whatever you used to mount the Trac with from having a lot of stress on the Track Mounting bolts on the inside. That is the main purpose of installing a rear hatch cover so you can get to the inside.
He added the backing plates.
Robert. , I really enjoyed your presentation and upgrade😅. Wondering if you could do another telling what size battery you use and how long does it last, also could you show how far your reach is to your speed handle from your seat and other reaches.
You could probably use rod building thread epoxy to seal any area where water is getting in around those trolley mounts.
*Great little trolling motor **enjoyable.fishing** recommend had it hooked up to my 15 foot old town canoe and it pushed it pretty good with me and my son (220 pounds each).*
Just picked one up today let me know what other tips you got
Ammo can is a great idea. cannot believe they want almost $70 for a saddle bag
You can paddle faster if you put your feet on the foot pegs plus you need at least a paddle that is around $150 and up to make a huge difference. The paddle is almost if not more important then the yak
I read other reviews that these flex really bad and if it's windy it will blow you everywhere.
Nice idea with the motor mount but I would paint it black so it don't look so ghetto.
You mean redneck.
You should remove all your screws and add silicon to them. No more leaks
Can you plz tell me what exactly is the conduit hanger called that you used and what size it is???
Could you steer with the extension or is it too far out of reach
I have, but I had to turn in my seat while doing it, and that got uncomfortable.
Check this: shad.co.uk/collections/pannier-fitting-kits/products/honda-cbr650-f-shad-3p-pannier-fitting-kit-h0cf64if It says "Incompatible with the SHAD SH23 panniers." but it seems its wrong considering you have already used them. I am really confused if SH23 side bags are combatible with CB650R's SHAD 3P Pannier Fitting Kit or not? (it mentions exactly the same for my model)
Does anyone know if the SHAD 3P System for CB650R (19-20) is combatible with SHAD SH23 side bags?
No. The shad 23 fits on the 3p system and on the bike cb650r. But then you can’t close the top lid. Tried it today on my cb650r -20 today. You need the sh 35 or 36 pannier. I ordered the sh35.
@@damgrenful Ok thnx a lot man. I have to do the same I guess...
@@francothebat yes.. unfortunately I had to buy the larger ones with aluminium. The sh23 are more sleek. But the sh35 are also nice. The thing is that the larger ones open on the side. It would be possible to weld and reconstruct the bracket :). On the other hand I will fit more luggage. The older bikes are not so wide were the passenger seat is.
@@damgrenful I'm afraid that the SH35s will be too big for our compact CB650R, I am not sure if it will look nice with so large bags on it...
@@francothebat Yes.. I know that could be a problem. But i will only use them on really long rides when i need lots of luggage. then i can take them off. I was also thinking of modify the bracket to get them out maybe 2 inches. That could be a solution. First i was going for the SW- motech blaze. But they are small and not waterproof. They are expandable but looks odd hanging. Not easy too choose the right ones :).
I have been on that river near Mack's creek can't wait to get back
I'm planning on installing a trolling motor on mine. Have you ever hated reaching behind your head to change speeds? I was in rough water today and thinking it might be a pain.
Yeah, it does get kind of annoying. I was trying to go up river in a fast current, and reaching behind was a minor issue, but annoying nonetheless.
@@Robert-bz5yn thanks for the reply . I like the idea better then paddling but i think i might keep thinking.
I thought I was watching Winston Moy 😂😂
Love the mount. Just bought one of these probably going to copy ur mount. Just don’t want to cut that back hatch for the washers
Yeah, I was nervous when I did it, but happy with it once completed. Haven't had an issue with it since.
I used the harmony 5" hatch with cat bag by my feet on my outlaw I keep my keys, wallet, and cigarettes and lighter everything stays dry
Just installed it this week.

Hey Robert! thanks for the vid. I contacted Shad and they say sh23 are not compaitbale with 3p period, there is even a discalimer on the site saying 3p is for sh35 and sh36 only. My question is when you bought this system at the time was this disclaimer still in place or at the time was sh23 listed as "compatible"? im trying to figure out its its some arbitrary H&S issue which is why they are currently listed as incompatible.
They were compatible when I bought it. They came with some pieces that had to be switched out.
It looks like it's bike specific. www.shadusa.com/products/d0b23100
@@Robert-bz5yn That is strange uk and euro sites saying sh23 not compaitible with 3p
@@googleuser5954 not true..
Do you know the dimensions of the transducer "compartment"?
You couldn’t make a run to the local hardware store for longer screws? A little foam sheet gasket maker will seal those trolley mounts, located next isle over from the fasteners at that store. Grab a scrap piece of 4” angle iron, prime it, drill it, mount it for your tm mount. You’re overthinking the wheel here man. I could have done all this in a day, not months like you said. Get that thing down off the horses and get on the water!
I'm pretty happy with the way I did it. You do you, man.
I'm looking to see if you've upgraded this
Not since I made this video. The only upgrade I currently have planned is another hatch with bag just in front of the seat. Thank you for your interest.
How are you enjoying your Outlaw? I just picked mine up
@@CurryRussell it's my current favorite toy. I fished more last summer than I ever had before, spending eight hour+ days on the water.
@@Robert-bz5yn I've fished more this year than in my entire life
Do you think it would be beneficial to get the backing plates for the gear tracks? And what do you think about the top load vs traditional tracks?
I have the backing plates installed, just didn't do a good job of explaining. I don't know that there is much of a difference between wide track and narrow track.
Looks great! How much weight would you say your battery and motor add to it?
Sixty lbs or so. I was worried about the weight, but the Outlaw handles it great.
@@Robert-bz5yn Hi. Love the design. Could you post what exact battery you're using. I could use the help.
Hey man I’m not sure if you’re aware or not, but I’ve recently found out about getting some ceramic coating (auto parts store or Walmart or Lowe’s etc) and spraying it on the paddles and the water just beads up and slides right off. Also you can use surf board wax.
I'll have to try this! Thanks!
@@Robert-bz5yn No problem!
Great video, you have a lovely, easy going style about you. I'm surprised you haven't done more videos/vlogs. You're a natural. You never did an update on the luggage on your CBR650F. Is this something you'd consider doing? 🤞 I have the 2017 CBR650F and am thinking about luggage. This is my first bike, I only passed my test last year (a late starter) and I am considering, in a year or so, once I'm more experienced, getting something like a VFR800 with luggage. This is because, I heard that if you put luggage on a bike like ours, the wind hits it as the front of the bike doesn't protect the luggage from the wind and the bike loses control. Is this true? How do you find it at speed? How does it handle? Many thanks.
Thank you for the compliment. I do wish I would have done an update before selling the bike and luggage. I never had an issue with the 21L luggage catching wind or destabilizing the motorcycle, even at 100 mph (160 kph). I don't think the 35L option would have trouble either. The VFR seems to be a great motorcycle and good step up from the CBR650.
Have you done a speed test yet? Just curious I'm leaning towards the 62lb thrust trolling motor for my outlaw. Thanks for the video some great info. I'd like to remove the power head and mount near the seat
My max was 4.1 all out... Not sure how long that would last though. From what I understand, lb of thrust doesn't matter much in top speed, but I don't know for sure. 40lbs gets me up some swift current rivers though.
@@Robert-bz5yn cool maybe I won't need the 62 after all either a 40 or 55 plus I'd be able to use a smaller battery is think with the smaller motor. All the extra weight is kindve a concern I've got a scupper cart but I think I'll just build a cradle type cart out of PVC would work better the scupper one slides around if not facing the right way. I guess another question I have is how long have you been able to run the motor on a charge? I LL be using mostly freshwater ohio lakes plus lake Erie and ohio river. I don't want to have to paddle while out there LOL
David i use watersnake 24 pound thrust trolling motors on my kayak builds they only weigh about 5 pounds and work extremely well with a low current draw compared to others.I run a 35 ah agm battery and get hours of run time with this setup
I use well nuts for everything I mount on my outlaw
How do you deploy the trolling motor once you are on the water? I'm looking for an easy way to do this without falling off the yak lol
In warm weather, I do it before hopping in. In cool weather, I turn around and push the release with the handle of my fish net. It's not too hard, once you get the hang of it. One guy on TH-cam has the release zip tied so all he has to do is pull on the trolling motor and use a bungie to keep it up.
@@Robert-bz5yn the bungee is a good idea. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing your build. I have the same kayak, and I’m installing a manual power pole where you have the trolling motor. I am curious if you added backing plates to the gear tracs. Thanks!
I did use backing plates. I went with YakAttack Fullback backing plates instead of DIY. I was worried the tracks would rip through the plastic from the torque.
Thanks for the video. I want to buy these and found that the mounting is to be bought separately. (shad.co.uk/products/honda-cbr650-f-shad-3p-pannier-fitting-kit-h0cf64if) this is the mounting link - do you think it's both or just one and if just one then is it left or right side
It was both sides when I purchased it. Looking at the price of the UK site and USA site (and exchange rate), I believe the UK site is selling both as a package.
@@Robert-bz5yn thanks mate
Great video on the shad hs23 model panniers. I'm curious how they compare to fit & quality of the GIVI that look similar. Did you happen to do any research on the givi before you made your decision? What was it that sold you on the shad? How have they performed and are you still happy with them today?
I did look at Givi, but I preferred the Shad mount, iirc. It's less conspicuous if the bags aren't mounted. I always got compliments on the bags looking like they were factory. I sold the bike with the bags, but I wouldn't have another bike without them. They were just too damn handy.
@@Robert-bz5yn Thank you my brother. I agree with they are handy and the look good too. I went with the givi 47 top and 35 sides. Givi has my tricolor cb650f as their model bike with that setup and I just feel in love with it... plus there's ac reputable givi showroom and service never here in Bangkok so it was seamless. Now in just need to figure out which gopro to get, mount it and I'll hit the road on Thursday
I would like to see the swivel seat prototype the boat is certainly stable enough it just needs to be carefully engineered
All in you're still way less expensive than buying a torqueeto trolling motor for a kayak. I like your setup. I saw on a different video where a guy cut the motor pole shorter put a 90°elbow there and mounted the power head where your ammo can is. That gave him speed control and on off control right at his seat instead of using the extension. I'm thinking of combining his ideas and yours to try to make the ultimate trolling motor mount for the perception outlaw. I just love mine. But it's not that easy for me to paddle it.( I'm a small almost 60 year old fisherman with heart and low back problems). The better fishing lakes near me are not very easy to paddle especially with an outlaw. I've been waiting to find that perfect setup and now that I've added your steering setup and I might use your mounting idea also combined with some ideas from other trolling motor hack videos I think I've come up with the perfect mount. At least perfect for me that is. One more item I need to work out for steering while standing up I'm on my feet usually 85% while fishing. I follow up with all the people I've gotten these ideas from and update you on my progress over this winter. Thanks again for some great information
Glad you like my setup. I will probably cut the shaft once the motor is out of warranty. My steering could probably work while standing, but I'm not balanced enough to steer under power. I look forward to seeing your setup.
Thanks for this video. I'm still trying to figure out how I want to install my trolling motor on my outlaw. The steering has been my main question you answered it for me thanks again
awesome job,
The anchor trolley line is upside down... having the bottom line from the pulleys running through the pad-eyes with the top line out of the pulleys tied into the anchor ring (triangle) makes for a stronger set-up with less slack and fewer misalignment issues through the pulleys...
I have to say, I put a harmony hatch in the front and love it! I put my keys and gopro extras in it. You should install it 😉
Finally installed it this last weekend. 😆
