Hi, great talk! Also, note that whenever it was cannonized, Ruth had already become the grandmother of David and the glorious united time of Isreal. However, Ruth was tested before Boaz married her. He acknowledged that she had spoken well about becoming an israelite. He helped her, but when he spoke about marriage he testified that he had witnessed her steadfast commitment when tested with hard labor of gleaning in fields, her fidelity in not chasing after young male workers, and her humble heart that accepted and worked hard in a low place in their society. She had professed and born fruit of true godliness. So, God did perseve holiness but was not a respecter or disrespecter of persons.

Loved the lecture! How I miss the Mpls community... Thank you for this. Btw, it has always seemed so disrespectful & dismissing to call the Jewish Bible the "OLD Testament". I started calling it the "Original Testament", to be respectful and to honor the foundation of Christianity and Islam.

There is no citation or scripture of the Hebrew bible before the 3rd Century BCE. Even when the Jews went to Babylon all the time they were in the diaspora they did not once mention Moses or Abraham or any books of the bible for that matter, strange isn't it? The Septuagint is a native Greek text. Hebrew didn't have a functional vocabulary at the time. The bible does not have enough dialectal variance to be 1000's of years old it was written by one group people.

Your post up gives evidence that you play by different rules than me, and so, I must limit my engagement with you. Example: You pretend to be both knowledgeable and ignorant of linguistics. I can't lick that. But, I will offer you this as a start: Your 3rd century limit on the Hebrew Language may be handily overcome by looking up the The 7th century Silver Ketef Hinnom Scrolls, and the countless bullae (1st Temple period) uncovered in the City of David. Esther risked her own life for the Greater good - that's her Jewish people! Her lament/fasting was her way to pray to the LORD for herself and her Jewish people for protection. Modern Christians in US can learn from Esther's action for greater good. When I looked back in the pandemic years, how many Christians were willing to wear masks for the greater good (for someone has weak immune system/any health issues making them more vulnerable to the virus)? Thank you Matt and Margaret for your teachings of this Old Testament course

I'm sorry, but I have one more comment, for what it's worth. First, I find these lectures INCREDIBLY valuable, informative, and useful! Thank you so much for publishing these! I have one tiny, niggling comment: I've heard several speakers refer to the "older testament," and I infer that you also speak of a "newer testament." I don't find any difference between these terms and the more traditional "Old Testament" and "New Testament." I presume that you are trying to be sensitive to those who find these latter terms condescending to Jews, and I must say that I am in that group. Why not just call them the Hebrew Bible (or the Jewish Bible [though grammatically incorrect] or preferably the Tanakh) and the Christian Bible, or if referring only to the first 39 books of the Christian Bible, then I suppose that there's no alternative than to call it the Old Testament, although I find that term grating. I'm sorry to nitpick when you do such wonderful work, but I feel like I'm hearing fingernails on a blackboard when I hear "Old (or Older) Testament.

I also have a question. Most translations say, "Let justice ROLL DOWN like water...," but a few say, "Let justice ROLL ON like water." The Hebrew Bibles say "Let justice WELL UP like water". I don't read or speak classical biblical Hebrew, but it seems to me that one of these translations must be correct and the other two incorrect. Any thoughts?

Thank you both for discussing the various ways people can seek out communities. Rev. Tyler's comment about "online" experiences being "real" is noteworthy. As people continue to worship online each Sunday and participate in small groups, the word "virtual" is not accurate. The reality is people are meeting one another, having thoughtful conversations, and developing authentic communities. Technology enables online participants to share, support, encourage, and pray for each other in a very real and meaningful way.
