Where did you get in? Looks like you are below St Paris Pike
It’s actually a little bit further north on 55.
What size rooster tails do you throw?
I like to throw a 1/8th oz. 1/16th works but I like the distance I can get out of a 1/8th
Snook will pop 40 lb leader
Is it their gill plate that cuts it?
Do you think I should use a leader on 6 lb mono as mainline, going their this weekend gonna try my luck
I think you’ll be fine without a leader. I only use one because I prefer to run braid as my main line and it’s green so it sticks out like a sore thumb in clear water.
Looks like you wound up with a different reel. Sorry you couldn’t figure out the other one.
I actually still haven’t tried to fix the other one yet. I’ve been meaning to but if I’m being completely honest I’ve been dealing with a little bit of winter laziness lol
I have caught many giant browns winter fishing in mad
I haven’t caught any giants but I’ve had a few days where I’ve put a ton of small ones in the net. I’m holding out hope for a 20+ one day.
Where on the GMR is this? Not looking for exact location obviously but Dayton area? North Dayton? South? Would love to get a pike!
@Mikey12383 this was in the Vandalia area. I’ve looked on the Fishbrain app and there are a lot more pike reported north of Dayton.
So cool. One of these years I need to make a winter trip down to FL
Thanks man. I highly recommend it!
Any advice for good access points for a new trout angler in and around the Springfield area? Mostly concerned about parking. Like the video!
@@8bitfrenzy376 yeah there are several great spots around Springfield. The Eagle City road access point is a good one. If you walk downstream about a quarter mile, there’s a bend that usually holds a few fish. Also on route 55 just north of Springfield, there’s a gravel parking area where you can get in. If you walk upstream and around the bend, there’s a deep hole where I’ve caught a few.
@@MidwestAnglingAdventures Much Appreciated, I'll try and get out there time and weather permitting.
@ good luck! I hope you catch some.
Good stuff man! My PB smallie is on that exact bone whopper plopper. 💪🏻
@@NickFishOhio614 thanks! The whopper plopper has caught me more big ones than any lure I’ve ever used. How big was your PB?
@ 2lbs 12oz and it was my first day ever going for smallies haha. I got another identical size one last year so I have 2 that are tied for my PB
@@NickFishOhio614 that’s awesome! If you ever get the chance, you should do some smallmouth fishing up in Lake Erie. There are some giants in there
@ it’s on my list for sure!
welcome to florida! looks like you had a good day and had fun!
@@RedfishRob I definitely did! Me and my grandpa come down for two weeks every year. The surf fishing was pretty slow but we went inland one day and managed to catch a few snook. Those were a blast to catch!
@@MidwestAnglingAdventures always a blast to catch fish with family and make memories!
What type of line and test are you using?
6 lb spiderwire braid with a 6 lb seaguar fluorocarbon leader
@@MidwestAnglingAdventures I met a guy on the river today using 2lb test haha! He was drifting salmon eggs in the current.
@ that’s super light. I’d be a nervous wreck if I hooked a big one lol
Find a nice inlet spring or creek that flows into that river you won't regret it
Those are definitely areas that I would usually target when it comes to trout and smallmouth bass fishing but for whatever reason, I never have much luck in areas like that on this river.
@MidwestAnglingAdventures use a topographical map to find tributaries Corp of engineers or DNR should have them for navigational purposes
Moraine looks like is closest
I hit a spot one time off Albany Illinois Mississippi we caught roughly 1500 fish all varieties in 2 days
When it gets warmer spring
As I mentioned in the other video, We haven't had a lot of water, so the winter stockings haven't had a chance to move around, and they kind of get stuck.. but now after last week, this is no longer the issue haha
I'd like to add this is shortly after stocking, and we've had very little water so this was prime conditions before they had a chance to spread out haha.. this is not typical. Second.. Would love to have you join us at Trout Unlimited Mad River, I'm relatively new to the group and I am very shocked how much work they put in to keep the river amazing and the access good for everyone.
Okay that makes sense. I’ve had an unusually productive season so far. I’ve caught at least 15 trout every time I’ve been out. And is there a website or Facebook group I can join to look into that?
@@MidwestAnglingAdventures I'm so glad you had a great experience, those are a new strain of trout, so you've really got a rare treat! I'm happy for you!
That was insane!
Awesome video and nice trout man! Cool channel too, I’ll definitely subscribe
@@Michigananglingadventures thank you! I’ll check yours out as well
Sometimes when you keep dropping fish its because they arent fully committed and short strike it and dont get the hook. Try switching to a smaller profile bait on those days or even a trailer hook.
I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks for the tip!
New sub!!! Great vid!
Awesome thank you!
@ where are you from?
@@MattsFishinMission the Dayton area of Ohio
Haha that was sweet
Love Mad River for trout fishing! Just got 7 of them the day after Christmas.
@@NickFishOhio614 nice! They’re a blast. Do you fish the Urbana area or down by Springfield?
@ I’m in Columbus so I’ve only been out there 3 times. Just north of Springfield. I want to try a little further north though.
@ gotcha this video was just north of Springfield. I’ve tried just outside of Urbana and got about 20. The rivers pretty in that area too
@ probably the same bridge I was just at. But I won’t say on here to keep our spot hush hush 😂
The mad river was dredged to a straight line many years ago. Mother nature has returned several bends in river. I have caught giants in these bends. One is south of county line road.
@@garylance4670 I’ll have to keep that in mind. Why was it dredged in a straight line?
@ to drain and create farmland
The way trout strike lures underwater must be slightly different then fish that swallow lures whole. I’ve yet to fish for trout with rooster tails because of the treble hooks and the fact that it can be swallowed. Absolutely hate catching fish that can’t be released because of them darn trebles on a lure the size of my thumb nail get swallowed whole upon strike lol
@@KodyTheOhioan yeah I completely get that. I use a 1/8th oz rooster tail and it’s just big enough to where it very rarely gets swallowed. All of last year, I only had to dispatch one trout due to swallowing the hooks. He was right at the legal limit of 12” so I just brought him home and cooked him up.
I have been fishing the Great Miami as well as the Little Miami and many SW Ohio creeks for more than 50 years. Smallmouth. I just found your channel and am looking forward viewing your past posts. Too old to get out there now, but had some tremendous times wading those waters. A 3lb. smallmouth from that river is an excellent catch. Nice Fish. Thank you for the posts.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it. I’ve been going to the Mad River lately and wading for trout but I’ll be taking my kayak out for more smallmouth in March.
6 pound test,i never went above 4 lb. I live in Florida now but from Ohio and fished the Mad for nearly 4 decades. You want bigger fish? Go in May , water temps in 50s, higher water and very aggresive fish especially as the water is falling and clearing after a heavy rain..
@@davidross5630 I’ll keep that in mind! I usually only fish trout from November-March but I’ll have to try May because I’ve been wanting to catch a big one. As far as the line goes, 6 pound is probably a little bit excessive but I like to use the heaviest line I can get away with because I’m paranoid about breaking off lol
That’s a gigantic reel for that rod
Yeah I usually use a smaller one with it but I like to use a bigger reel when trout fishing in fast moving water.
What length rod are you using? Looks rather short.
@@Bleda412 it’s a 5’ ultra lite. Definitely my favorite rod for panfish and trout!
What reel is that… looks like a Penn?
It’s a toadfish reel
@ ahhh it’s probably got a internal defect.. pretty sure the anti reverse on those run off a gear. If it does you need to open it up. If it runs off an anti reverse clutch I wouldn’t mess with it and get a new reel. Take the spool off and spin the rotor nut off and remove rotor.. if it has a round cylinder with 3 to 6 screws it’s a clutch pack.. if not it’s a gear. Either way it’s going to need to be fixed because it won’t get better only worse.
I will recommend that if you do go the new reel route check out the Diawa Fuego LT. they make them down to a 1000 size reel. I own several of them and can say they way outperform what they cost. I’m surprised to see trout in the mad river… must be further north by Springfield because I’ve fished a lot of it around Dayton and never seen a trout 1.
@@SW_OhioFinesseBandit gotcha thanks for the response! I might call fisherman’s HQ in Dayton and see if they would work on it for me. And I’ve tried fishing for trout near Dayton too cause that’s closer to me. They tend to stay up north near Urbana
@ if they won’t I am just south of Eaton Ohio and I work on/fix/mod all my own reels. I’d be happy to crack it open for you and at the least let you know exactly what’s failed and see about sourcing parts to fix it. First thing I would do is contact toadfish and see if they will warranty it.
Great day! From TN but visiting some fam in west Dayton. Saw Urbana wasn’t too far from them and would love tp fly fish the mad. What put in is this called? Can’t find any good public places to put in
@@loganu249 this spot is actually halfway between Urbana and Springfield but it’s really shallow and the fish have mostly moved out as of this week. There’s a good access point on Eagle City Rd that’ll give you access to some deeper water
Great action. Wow every cast almost. I have the opposite prob here in my fav spot in pa...low numbers but bigger fish.....i will take either lookin forward yo ya gettin that high teens fish....they must of been spawning so grouped up like that..awesome
@@rustbeltwilds837 yeah I’ve never seen them as aggressive as they’ve been this year. I just went again yesterday and got over 20 with one of them being 14-15”. I’ll be posting the video in the next few days!
Nice Video Keep Growing,,,,
Thank you!
Good work out there man. Nice video.
@@MK_Outdoorsx thanks!
where abouts are you? how far north??
This was in the Urbana area. Do you fish the Mad?
Congrats on catching your first northern pike! Subbed to your channel.
@@Amf4493 thank you! They’re rare in this area so I was pretty excited. I just looked at your channel and it looks like you’ve caught some nice ones!
@ biggest I caught was 14lbs….this past season was 10 lbs. Watch out for those teeth and the ones on the gill plate!
@@Amf4493 that’s awesome! Yeah those gill plates will tear you up. I’ve caught a few Muskie and every time I end up all cut up.
Man, when they're super aggressive and really biting, you can't scare em away. Great content 🎣👍🎣
Thanks!
the under the knees with the net is impressive
@@bidenhasdementia8657 thanks!
where did you put in at?
@@justintT42 North Dayton
Are you able to launch & exit at the same spot, river flow doesn't seem to bad?
@@bobmoore5712 yes, the river has been extremely low this year because of the drought that we went through.
@@MidwestAnglingAdventures thank you
good morning to you too, I hope you had fun that day.
@@Demonkingx5 thank you! I sure did
Everyone throws that stupid popper plopper.... While the buzz rules
@@markhamblin8195 buzzbaits are great but I prefer the whopper plopper because it’s more versatile in my opinion.
North of Tipp City ?
@@Tom-bl6yq just north of Dayton actually
i will never get catch n release, looks tasty
@@aarona5839 I really only keep walleye and crappie. I just bass fish for fun. To each their own though!
@@MidwestAnglingAdventures bass taste amazing. you are missing out
@@aarona5839 I’ve tried largemouth before and really liked it. I’ll have to try a smallmouth sometime
The test is not cooking it, the test is catching it.
That's sexy fish
I just wanna know how that bait changed from a buzz bait to a crank bait during the fight….😵
@@scottjohnson8576 it’s a whopper plopper! Basically just a topwater crankbait with a propeller on it
Well my friend that is how smallies eat
Never seen a feral bass before😂 What a catch! Congratulations!
@@thedude-nf1uf thank you!
Wow, very nice smallmouth. I love smallmouth fishing. Love how they jump and fight. Biggest I've ever caught is a 22 inch 6.5 pounds. Best of luck to you.
@@311steelester3 thanks! Mine is 21.5 inch 6.25 pounds. I got it when I was 13 and I’ve been chasing that high ever since lol
Easy to see how he got that big
@@mikhail2400 yeah he was a vicious one!
I caught the biggest bass of my life in a pond there was a little pipe sticking up out of the water so I decided to throw a worm in hopes of getting a nice blue gill but nope I caught a 26” 7.2lb bass sucker was thick and chunky and caught on very light line as I was fishing for blue gill my previous record bass catch was 1” in size and weight was maybe a few grams I’ve never been a bass fisherman always go for trout and pan fish cause I like to eat what I catch and I hate the taste of bass 🤮
@@TheShmeebitdog that’s awesome! I’ve only eaten a few bass and I didn’t think it was too bad. I will agree that it isn’t nearly as good as bluegill and trout though
Forget the fish anyone else see his net
Ya just rip it away from it twice. Pure luck.
