TRANSPLANTING PAPAVER SOMNIFERUM SEDLINGS
The seeds shown in this video are PURE POPPIES™ Afghan Blue Bush Poppy seeds which can bought here:
purepoppies.co.uk/product/afghan-blue-bush-poppy/
This is the second video in this short series on transplanting Papaver Somniferum or Opium poppies, and in this one I want to focus on transplanting very young seedlings within the first week or so of their growth.
The very young seedlings that you can see in this video are growing in jiffy 7 peat pellets which is what we start nearly all of our seeds in and they are doing really well, its just that the amount of seeds in each pellet varies quite a bit, most of them have a few too many seeds growing and some don’t have enough, in act you can see that some don’t have any at all.
At this stage of their growth it's an ideal time to transplant a few of the seedlings from pellets that have too many growing, and transfer them to pellets that have none growing or only one or two. The seedlings that you are moving are otherwise going to have to be pulled out anyway when thinning, so you’ve got nothing to lose by trying this.
In the video you can see that these peat pellets are quite moist, and its important that they have an adequate amount of water in them before doing this as it will make it much easier and increase the success rate of the transplants - if your pellets are quite dry then you'll need to water them and wait for five or ten minutes to allow both the pellets and the roots to absorb as much water as possible.
The first two tiny leaves that you can see her are what’s known as the cotyl-e-don, which are the two embryonic leaves that are always the first to come out, and the next two that will appear after these will be what are called the first true leaves.
Strictly speaking germination hasn’t officially been completed until the first -two -true leaves have developed, so this stage you can see here is sort of mid-germination, even though its probably more common to say that they’ve germinated as soon as you see some green emerging.
Thanks for watching, post any questions in the comments section and I'll try my best to answer them.

Papaver Somniferum Poppy Time Lapse - Germination Testing

We test all of our seeds for germination so we decided to film a typical test to show the different rates at which certain varieties grow. There are 20 strains of Papver Somniferum (Opium Poppy) shown here, 14 of our own PURE POPPIES™ seeds, plus seeds from 6 different eBay sellers for comparison. 2 types failed to gerninate at all, Number 01 and Number 20. Number 18 had only 1 seed fully germi...

      The 41mm ones, you can use bigger or smaller but they seem to be the best all round size. The extra deep ones allow more time before planting out which may be a consideration.

    • @PUREPOPPIES
      @PUREPOPPIES 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you mean a week after sowing then 1 inch of growth is incredibly quick! It depends massively on the temperature and light levels but growth is always much slower at the start, once you get the first “true leaves” then photosynthesis kicks in and it starts to speed up, for most varieties it will take 4-8 weeks to get to the “cabbage stage” of growth but may take longer than this if they are sown very early or late in the season. I hope this helps.

      @@PUREPOPPIES The only thing I think of off hand is how to protect them from a hot climate while still giving access to a lot of sunlight. My house is only so big 😅

    • @PUREPOPPIES
      @PUREPOPPIES 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a great question! When growing inside the house I try to get the pots as close as possible to south-facing windows, the key thing is to keep the windows open or ajar as often as possible- obviously this is not always possible for security reasons! It’s also a very good idea to have some sort of fan blowing on them if possible, this really helps with ventilation as well as temperature control. It can be a really low powered fan, a mini oscillating desk or floor fan is best but I have also used 12v PC fans which have the bonus of being virtually silent. In reality, all Somniferum poppies can actually cope with very high temperatures as they are native to the southern Mediterranean and the Middle East, therefore ventilation is actually more important than temperature control.

    • @cleoharper1842
      @cleoharper1842 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PUREPOPPIES WOW that's so helpful! Thank you so much. I would never have thought of using a fan! It also means I can put them on my south-facing porch, which I was really worried about before. One last question, I promise: where is it I'm aiming for with the fan when they get taller? Root level, leaves or heads? Sorry, I'm really very much a beginner.

    • @PUREPOPPIES
      @PUREPOPPIES 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s no problem honestly! You should look to prioritise the top of the plant (flowers/pods/leaves) as that is always the youngest part of the plant and therefore the most vulnerable to damage. By the time the stem has grown, the bottom leaves can withstand a lot of damage and not affect the health of the rest of the plant. The best way to prevent the soil and roots from getting too hot is to spread a thin layer of perlite over the top of the soil - the white perlite will reflect the radiant heat of the sun while also allowing the soil to breathe and absorb water.

      Basically, yes! I wouldn’t recommend buying seeds on eBay as nearly every seller is sending out trash seeds, almost all of them just copy and paste photos from google image search, and send out seeds they bought in a supermarket or grocery store. I know as I’ve tested dozens of them, plus over half of them are infected with mosaic virus.
