It's not uncommon to see old carriages built into restaurants here in the USA. Typically, joined along side of a building with tables (booths) on the inside for customers. Also, I've seen at least one old dining car (stand alone). Not to be confused with American diners which typically have not railroad hardware associated with them.
I think the Isle of Wight bus service has to be one of best in World, and seeing the Island by bus is best way to see it . Those vintage buses, are in fantastic condition & immaculate. Agree totally they are probably more comfortable than some of today’s buses!
@@iainburns423 absolutely agree Iain! The bus drivers especially are first class and do a superb job, and the bus museum are incredible too 🙂👍
Another super video Jack, never got to explore Sandown & Shanklin in more detail back in May this year. Also never got a trip on the Island line either . Definitely next time I’am on Isle of Wight. It’s such a stunning Island.I’ll be back!
@@iainburns423 thank you Iain! Absolutely, fingers crossed for some nice weather when you come down 🙂👍
I'm sure I saw one of the disused embankments in the 1980's when on holiday. Also as well as normal transport I would thin lines other then the IOW Steam Railway if still running would encourage more visitors or encourage them to stay longer.
@@brianfretwell3886 yes I'm sure you probably did. Maybe the one on the way into Whitwell which is still quite noticable from the roadside. It certainly is a right shame not more railways were kept, God knows we need them more than ever now 👐 Thank you for watching 🙂
I'm sure the upkeep of the tunnel was one of the reasons BR wanted to close that part of the line. Silly when the water supply needed it! Just a pity the station isn't at a lower part of town. Ventnor West reinstatement would be impossible though.
That's great to watch Jack and would have been interesting if it had happened. Wasn't there also some sort of plan for a link from Ventnor down to the sea, or am I imagining that?
@@tonycook603 thank you Tony. No you are not imagining it, It was a proposed funicular railway. Will be doing a video on it in the coming months 😊 all the best 👍
Great video!! I moved to Niton in 2018 but my exploring slowed down when I needed to take more care of my elderly mother, who lives down the road from me now. I intend to hit the ground running in the new year and start exploring again, mainly in my MG TF or my Royal Enfield Classic 500 motorcycle, to get to places where I can do loads of walking and taking in the sights. Thank you for your channel and I love all things railway too 🙂
@@richardyardley5127 thank you Richard! Very kind of you to say. Love Enfields, one of my favourite bikes ... wish to have one one day. All the best & hope you manage to get out exploring soon.👍
Very interesting...the suggested pier seems interesting, given the naval presence in the area, providing a possible railway link to any anchorage. Another possible option for the station could be v shaped station trailing down to the pier line....
@@tonym7366 thank you! Yes could well be. I'm not aware of any intent to link Sandown to the mainland via ferry but that may have been something the company was briefly planning with the branchline ... still its fun to wonder sometimes 👍
An interesting video, thanks for posting. Seeing the map of the whole line reminds me how much of a loss the closure of Shanklin to Ventnor has been; especially in view of the number of landslides in the area. Your previous video put the case very well.
@@sueweston502 absolutely Sue. We'll have to hope that this rain and wind doesn't cause any further issues this winter with land movement. I will be heading out there again in late January to do a '1 year later' follow up video to the Why Ventnor Needs A Railway one I did earlier this year. As you know it's still a very pressing issue. All the best Sue and thank you as always for watching 😊
Read 'The Great Isle of Wight Train Robbery' by R.E.Burroughs years ago, about how the closure of lines was implemented on purpose, using fictitious or manipulated passenger data and collusion with the Bus Companies. If you can get hold of a copy, worth a look. Skulduggery was alive and kicking even in the 50's.
Thanks for the suggestion ... I'm always interested in any new reading material. Cheers for watching 🙂👍
Interesting and very well made.
@@northernblue1093 Thank you, very kind of you to say 😊
The original OS route would have been just one massive cutting, although it was interesting the terminus would have been on the site of my old home in Avenue Road. the Maycock and Silsbury route makes more sense from a civil engineering point of view, but not an operational one.
@@T8Hants totally agree, there would have been a vast amount of engineering works involved which just wasn't feasible for such a short line. The irony is that in this day and age Sandown would benefit massively from a station closer to the town center but hey ho. Thanks for your comment and cheers for watching 🙂👍
Excellent viewing. Thanks Jack!
@@Boyce1964 thank you mate. Glad you enjoyed it 😊👍
Another interesting video Jack, thanks for sharing. The station where I used to live is a fair walk up hill to the village but I don’t think they were originally going to have one but a local landowner would only allow the railway to go through his land if they built a station together with a private entrance near his house. 💙🧶🌈🍓
Thank you as always Jenny. That sounds interesting, do you live on the island or the mainland? The only station on the island I'm aware of that was built on bargaining for land was Watchingwell out west wight. All the best Jenny and hope you're keeping warm 👍
@ I now live on the island but I used to live in East Sussex and it was the station in a small market town called Wadhurst that I was referring to. I expect in the history of the railways, there was a lot of land negotiations that went on. 💙🧶🌈🍓
@@jennyturner6399 I'll have to look it up Jenny. East Sussex is lovely but I bet you love it over here 😊 though a bit stormy at the moment ☂️
Good evening Jack, you make an interesting comment about station's being some distance from a town or village. Micheldever station is about 5 kilometre's from the village its self. A long walk on a wet night, I hope my conversion is correct. Regarded. Andrew.
@@andrewrawlance6651 blooming heck that's a long way! I've always been amazed by stations that are nowhere near their namesake especially those that are still open somehow. Hope your having a good evening Andrew and thank you for watching as always 🤗
Fascinating, the first I've ever heard about this line.
@@michaelbattman2971Thank you Michael! I only heard about it myself a year or so ago, it was a subscriber of mine who actually came up with a lot of the information on the line so I have them to thank 😊
Nice one Jack, how about a video on the proposed Shanklin and Chale Railway? My model layout is inspired by this.
You can read my mind Nathan I was literally just thinking that. Mind if I message you sometime on FB and have a chat about info and stuff? 🙂
@WightWanderer no problem mate.
Excellent film ! We’ve just moved here and our house literally backs on to Golden Hill Country Park! by a stroke of serendipity your first walk was almost in our back garden! Agreed you get some great views from the fort. Another great video Jack, every time we visited the island a trip to the model railway at Fort Victoria was treat for me and the children. If I remember correctly there was also a model railway in Cowes.
@@Oldbeachdonkey great memories I'm sure! Yes it is such a shame Fort Victoria railway closed 😞. You are right, here was one in Cowes too a lot small though. Think it was somewhere down by the esplanade? Thank you for the kind words as always 👍

@@WightWanderer Cheers - you too
Newtown creek was so well regarded for its Oysters that Queen Victoria would only eat oysters which came from Newtown. The village economy was ran on oysters beds which are still visible limited at high tide but more so at low tide. In the late 70s a barn appeared in Bluebell woods and who traded on this Victoria link, however consumers soon got this gist and the company faltered. Not quite Newtown, but in Shalfleet creek there is a Messerschmitt which crashed after taking Ack Ack from Lepe beach. As children we dug out the pilots boots. No bones though. Thank you crabs.
Hi Jack, beautiful walk, stayed at Norton Grange. Warner Hotel, back in August, did walk part of that path. Never got to Fort Victoria though! Views over the Solent are breathtaking!

Looking forward to December - and yes please, a vid on the tram would be fab! how many tramways were there on the Island, do you know? i only know of the Ryde Pier one (which sadly I'm so old I remember riding on - just!)
@@sueweston502 thank you for watching as always Sue. I will do a short video on it soon then 🙂. There were a few, the Ryde Pier Tram & Hamstead tramway I've already done videos on. There was one at Fort Victoria but there was apparently a temporary one built along Military Road whilst it was being constructes, though can find little to no information on that one at all. All the best Sue 👍

What a great video! I really enjoyed watching you travel on as many buses as possible. As a somewhat older guy, I would have chosen to go for as many older vehicles as I could. (That's not meant as a criticism by the way!) My favourites were always the Lodekkas, like the Bristol FS (the FLF has a front entrance) you rode on back from Brading at one moment. It reminded me of being a kid at my grandparents in Totland and traveling on the front seat facing backward, generally kneeling on the seat in order to peer at what the driver was doing.
Hi Brian. Great memories I'm sure! Yes I think the Bristols were my favourite of the day too, great sounding machines. We are very lucky on the island to have the bus museum which run vintage buses rather often. Thank you for watching and the kind words about the video 😊👍
