How to calculate the shear strength here?
This one is pretty straight forward, you can just use the ultimate shear strength from your machine reading. And the sample is usually 1x1”. So it’s an easy calculation to get shear strength per square inch.
How much is the difference between tensile strength for specimen with holes and without holes?
Depends on the size of the hole but somewhere around 15-25% reduction in tensile strength.

What type of material?
This one was a low-medium strength steel. For higher strength and hardened steels, we would recommend a different, more robust wedge grip.

I don't think that could be thought a good test. The break occurred at the stress concentration at the lower grip - there must be a better specimen design. The plot we saw on the monitor has very little to do with the material properties - more on the behaviour of the grips as they compress the specimen.

Sure like to see a video but geeze what the hell. your music is too darn loud, ease up on the db<. no reason to be that high it is not info. To test a material and not affected by holding procedure make a much bigger piece and make a central diamenter perhaps only 1x1 vs a piece with two ends 2x2 so that the clamp or attachment does not weaken the test material
Can we add any light censor or metal censor instead of foot swich
Yes, its possible to add this on your own. The grips are normally open (there is a spring to expel out the air when there is no pressure.) You can add any type of control mechanism or sensor/switch on your own. When the grip gets the air pressure, it closes. We don't sell these but you can make it on your own, its not difficult.

I believe the starting grip length distance on this test is 4 inches of distance/separation. You can refer to the ASTM method to double check.

Hi Rumah, yes its based on the thickness of the sample. I think these are the correct files for thickness 1mm sample. If your sample is thicker, everything else must be scaled up. Please check the ASTM document for more info. We can customize the fixture according to your specific needs.

what are the specifications for tensile testing of steel hollow tubes?
The material is usually tested as a bar. For type testing you can put steel mandrel in the end like a cork for a wine bottle. This makes it easier to pull. Tubes are not standard samples, only flat and round tensile bars according to the ASTM. Tubes can be different diameter and wall thickness so there is no standard tube size

HOW TO MEASURE ROUND HOLLOW PIPE ??
Its best to put metal mandrels, or stoppers, or plugs into the ends of the pipe. This way, the pipe will not be crushed by the grips when you tighten them. This will allow you to do an accurate tensile test.
what is the test speed?
This one is at 100mm a minute. You can look at the mm travel on the screen and time it by the time in the video.
