Still Wakes the Deep Review
Still Wakes the Deep is a return to the first-person narrative horror genre for The Chinese Room, creator of critically acclaimed games such as Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, and Dear Esther. You are an offshore oil rig worker, fighting for your life through a vicious storm, perilous surroundings, and the dark, freezing North Sea waters. All lines of communication have been severed. All exits are gone. All that remains is to face the unknowable horror that’s come aboard.

I think the reason why it doesnt feel as grand as Dishonored 1 is because both Arkane Lyon and Austin developed D1 but for dishonored 2, it was soley developed by arkane Lyon while Arkane austin was developing prey

"Should you give it a try? No." "The reality is that the game is just not that good" This is just a bad review. These opinions come out of nowhere and are completely based on whether or not it delivered in very specific areas you apparently deem more important than others. If I had to guess, you aren't a fan of platformers, as I don't think you even referred to it as a platformer once, which is almost impressive. Like the game feels incredibly tight, the levels are super dense, the writing and art direction are charming, the music is great. Where is this lacking other than the quantity? Because in terms of quality, I can't think of any n64 esque platformers on the market that are this solid. The amount of care given to the bounciness of the animations, the deliberate framerate lock, and the variety and complexity of the secret hunting is nothing short of inspired. Also no void screws mentioned which is pretty telling. Either you found none, which means you only scratched the surface, or you thought it wasn't worth mentioning, which reflects poorly on the writing of the review. I would have never seen your channel if it weren't for this review, and it feels like that's a mistake. All the stealth game videos on your channel make it pretty clear where your passion is, so maybe stick with games like Dishonored that you're willing to play through multiple times for your script, instead of a game like this that you don't even enjoy playing apparently. If you wanted to stack this review up alongside a bunch of other indie platformers, then at least the audience could form an understanding of what types of platformers you like, but it's really looking like you just reviewed platformers as a whole and said they weren't engaging enough for you.

“But if you like what you’ve seen go for it.” Conveniently left out that tidbit huh? I’m pretty sure I covered every possible category and if missing one let me know. All areas are important, when some falter, others can make up for it. i.e. ambience vs music or gameplay vs story. There’s a balance that CAN be maintained when looking at story vs gameplay (Minecraft vs To The Moon come to mind). I’ve played many other platformers. Little Big Planet (personal favorite), Yooka-Laylee, all of the Mario’s, all of the Banjo-Kazooies, and god knows how many other titles that fit into the category. I did reference Mario 64 in there but I could have done a better job and elaborated more on why a few games from 20+ years ago outdid this modern title. “Levels are super dense”. I would say the levels are appropriately dense. Thank god the dev didn’t cram enemies everywhere he absolutely could. The writing is meh at best. It’s a story in a dream world, that’s an automatic tell that it’s going to be mediocre at best. “Where is it lacking other than the quantity?” The quality. Mind you, I went into this game with solid expectations with the best of intentions of playing, and reviewing a game that may or may not deserve the attention. I found all of the void screws on my own time, they’re not worth mentioning because by the time a player has finished the game (if they even make it to the end), they’re ready to put it down. Speaking of making it to the end, I found out after I had posted the review that the game had more positive Steam reviews than people who finished the tutorial. I replayed the Dishonored games to see if choices really mattered, (they mainly affect the ending and dialogue) which overall they didn’t. I also replayed to test play styles to ensure that it could be done without killing a single NPC and vice versa. I like platformers that are well executed and fun. This is neither. It’s doubly worse because of the fact that other platformers exist that this could’ve taken ideas/inspiration from but simply didn’t. If you don’t like this review, or any of my others, remember that it’s subjective, as all reviews are. I would ask that you go watch Jim Sterling’s review on Final Fantasy 13 because that should give you a lesson in objectivity vs subjectivity.

@@CarmelOP-official If you really think just saying “But if you like what you’ve seen go for it.” undoes the review, then idk what your goal is on this channel even. The point of a review is to hear what you have to say. And you're telling me that this is a bad unfun game, yet are now responding telling me you got 100% completion by choice? This doesn't add up lmao. You completed your review, in which you told your audience the game was bad and unfun, and then went back and explored every last corner of the game? Huh? This is just weird, and no I'm not gonna do this weird deflection thing where you somehow try to redirect this to Jim Sterling lmao. Just reflect on this and try not to steer people away from great games because of misplaced priorities. LittleBigPlanet is a horrible platforming experience that is carried by it's personality, so now you've given perfect context for what you apparently value in platformers.

LBP is one of my personal favorites and you keep deflecting the fact that I’ve played a ton. Again, me not liking this game seems more and more like a you problem than anything. What I value in platformers is fun, which this is not.

Was going to say this - no in-game save, only 'save and quit'. It's a skill issue - I'm a casual. I'd like to be able to save when I've cleared an area, and move on. If I get killed, and cursed, then I could go back to the save in other games, but not Blood West. Re-spawing enemies are no fun either - you clear an area, lose some health doing it, but if you want to re-gain heath, the enemies are back and you have to do it all over again. (You can guess I don't play From Software games! I like to watch others playing them instead.) I've tried for a few hours, but gave up from frustration. It's made for more hard-core gamers than an old fart like me! Having said that, I may try your tip and get back into it!

Also whenever you cleared a camp, or like half of it, just "quit and save" then go back, if you made a mistake like dying, just alt-f4, then go back, the loading in this game is very quick. I finished the game without getting even one curse flaw. one last tip, buy the revolver "orb of night", it will carry you till the end of the game.

@@soulbro55 Fantastic advice, Soulbro! I loved the vibe around this game, so I got it in a recent sale, but it seems designed for gamers who play for a long time at a stretch - that's not the way I enjoy games. I do want to continue, because it's all cool stuff - I will try your exploit and gameplay advice. But I've recently started playing Red Dead 2 - so it may take a while! ;-) I'm not actually 'playing' RDR2 really - I'm playing an RPG with Arthur as the hero - got my honour up way high! Actively dislike the story missions, so I only touch them when I've run out of options. Bloody Micah, shooting up a town when I'd freed him without harming a soul! What a dick! Cheers, mate.

Typically I just play the game first. Most games know what genre they’re trying to emulate so that’s a good starting point for my own subjective reasonings as to why some aspects work with what the devs may be aiming for. Other than that I just look at Steam forums and Wiki’s.

For Dishonored, it took roughly about 35 hours; 9 hours for the first playthrough, 6 for the second playthrough, 1 hour for the first rough draft and another for the second and final drafts, 1+ hours of recording voice, two 8 hour days of editing, and less than an hour for putting it up on TH-cam and making the Quick Review Short. I'm still fairly new to this and with dogs who want constant attention, things take longer than they probably should.

It took 2 10+ hour days. I'm going to do the sequels, I just have to decide who gets what playthrough. I don't know if I want to do a no-kill run as Corvo or Emily and use the one I don't play as my kill run character. Thank you for the correction on the chaos system.

One of my favorites. Not necessarily what I play if I'm itching for "pure stealth" like Thief, Styx, Splinter Cell etc; but as an RPG in it's own right; this game will always be a classic. I'm curious for your thoughts on the sequel, can't wait for that review.

10:16 stealth is the main way to go in the first area, 2nd and 3rd guns are more advisable since you have a lot of good gear at that point and enemies also use weapons, so you can refill your ammo stealth is mostly for the small sized enemies, bigger enemies have too much HP and deal too much damage to kill with melee
