I just finished watching Killer Joe, an •excellent• pitch-black comedy that centres around two very different, yet exceptionally *Quiet* Women within a particular dysfunctional urban-poor Dallas, Tx. family and The Father and Son loser duo who just talk constant s**t to one another, non-stop, and just do NOT know when to just shut the f**k up for their own good - in many ways, it’s a complete inversion of the conventional classic gender stereotypes, and yet it also manages to make a brilliant analogy between mindless superficial chattering and sleepwalking - whilst also hammering home the point that people who constantly talk too much (and thus cannot actually Think properly) •always• seem to make the same mistake of assuming that friends and family members who are quiet and unassuming are naive, unsophisticated, innocent or even slow-witted - in a word, “Dumb”.

I cant read in silence anymore. I have a very hard time with suicidal thoughts, and unfortunately im so terrified of my own mind now that reading in silence is a long forgotten dream; now, if i have a book, there is always something on in the background. Sorry Dave :(

He wasn't just my favorite teacher but "This Is Water" was my favorite DFW experience. At the time, just how close he was to essentially laying out the foundations of "Truth is like Water and needs vessels to carry it" (an expression not attributed to DFW) didn't occur to me until much later in life. RIP

They don't want things to be quiet anymore because that would mean they wouldn't be able to brainwash you anymore.

I ironically find I feel way more dread in loud public settings now the older I get than in quiet peaceful solitude.

I don't know if he knows it or not, but he's talking about emergence, and what he's describing is brilliant. This is an approach that needs to have wider adoption.

I recommend Karl Popper and studying scientific theory. We still don’t have any modern philosophers who have created a bridge between Aristotle’s induction and modern scientific theory. I’m including a chapter in my book on it, but changing scientific theory will change the world. Some other philosophies are more niche. The enlightenment was arguably born out of the relationship between reason, induction, and experimentation.

There are no facts that support love. Love is wise, but it isn't in facts or truth, we don't have the slightest idea what it is, and that is as it should be.

I appreciate someone calling that out about public spaces playing loud obnoxious music... it's only worse than when this was recorded. People shouldn't have to put up with having to tune out the most inflammatory & obnoxious ear pollution that makes up top40 sameness at too many places it should never be... Why not something in the background instrumental or ambient, so its left up to interpretation, instead of having someone's overly gratuitous lyrics or self indulgent singing, that's not even suited for public consumption, let alone a "guilty pleasure"...

People are conditioned by the environment they live in. This avoidance of quiet he talks about is caused by the consequences of an overstimulating sensory environment. People who enjoy quiet are also likely to be readers. Technology is a threat to quiet because it bombards people with external noise stimulation. ADHD and many of the mental illnesses people are suffering from, comes out of this overstimulation. Particularly if television was the babysitter in childhood.

i used to also share this sentiment i was wrong you need connection you need people, being alone with your own thoughts, actively alienating yourself for too long leads to bad things. It's hard to notice the negative effects at first because its so enjoyable, you shrug off the pain of isolation because of the benefits, but madness creeps masking as intellectual epiphanies or what seem like fringe perspective breakthroughs, before you know it you're a covert nut. Depending on how smart you are you can stave off the madness seemingly well until eventually your mind is tricked into believing the logic of illogic.

I was lucky, then I was blessed. I understand what he was saying. But my rebellion against a tyrannical world has been to lean to cherish my alone time. I have reached a point where I triage my battles, depending on my then present state. But I am still willing to risk another relationship but only with a woman who knows both her value and her values, and I will come alive. Great framing & production. -Dan

I truly think that this man would have so much to contribute to the world today if he was still alive. Most of what he is says could be applied to our reality today. But he was the only one who knew the pain he felt inside so I dont judge him at all. But I wish he knew that on the other side of the dark nights of the souls is usually where the treasure is at. RIP DFW
