Hey Dr. would like an update today on how things are going?
Hello, I am still surprised and thankful and how well I’m doing. I really have not had any complications and continue to have very good range of motion without pain allowing me to do whatever I choose to do. My advice to you is to consider your options, and do not let a surgeon automatically do cervical fusion because it is what they are most trained to do.
@@dannymcclure1932 I got a Mobi-C done almost two weeks ago. 34 Y/O and have lifted weights, wrestled, and hiked often for the last 20 years. So needless to say, sitting still is tough. But I am trying to reach out to as many people as possible to keep a positive light.

What restaurant did you eat at by black rock beach? Looks like it was by the Sheraton 🤔 also what did you think about the cruise?
Thanks for asking. First, the Trilogy cruise was GREAT! Honestly, my wife and I both talk about it more than any other one thing we did on our trip to Maui. The dinners we had on this video were from the cruise and a dinner we ate there at the Sheraton. (You are correct!) So funny you messaged...at this moment I am searching for a trip back to Maui. Seriously, looking at flights right now! 🙂
@@dannymcclure1932 that’s awesome! Second time going back to Maui for us and we booked a dinner for mama’s fish house and Merriman’s. Will definitely check out trilogy for sunset cruise
Hello, my good friend. Have you ever traveled to Isfahan? Isfahan is known as half of the world. You must see Isfahan.
Sir why did you choose mobi c not the prodisc c ?
Good question. The answer, for me, is rather simple. The prodisc-C was not available at the time of my surgery. I hear it is a great device.
Thank you docteur .
I am very glad for you and your beautiful family.the moment am writing i have terrible pain that you described.
Thank you kindly. I am really hopeful you can find relief from your pain. Please keep me updated on your progress.
Awesome to hear you’ve had fantastic long term results
Thank you for making the videos Dan I m going for a disc replacement between C5-C6 I've had a bulging disc for 27 years the last year my right hand index finger has been aching and sometimes a warm feeling in my forearm also the last few weeks my right hand index finger is aching. I'm having the procedure done at the hospital for special surgery in Manhattan by Dr Iyer, he is putting in the nuinvasive simplify disc , titanium mounting plates above and below with a ceramic disc in the middle , from what I understand their is a 15 to 20 year study on the nuinvasive disk showing no breakdown of the components, what I would like to ask is where do think the pain in your back and neck is from ? Do you think it's from the position your put in during sx or from the chisleing of the vertebrate that is now pain radiating outward ?
This is a great question, and thank you for sharing your history. I am hopeful you will find symptom relief, and I expect you will. I believe the other symptoms in my back and neck are originating from other bulging discs and osteophytes in other segments of my neck. My surgeon and I have not thought the pain to be severe enough to warrant disc replacement. But, for sure, the resolved pain from the area corrected for me has seemed to diminish the pain I was experiencing in other areas from the other diseased cervical spine segments. Pain seems to worsen other pain, and less pain in one area also seems to diminish the experience of pain in other areas. I have not known about the Nuvasive Simplify Disc. I just now did a little review of it. It looks very good. I am glad the disc replacement technology continues to advance. This will hopefully become a treatment option for more people in need. Please keep me posted on your progress. Wishing you all the best and a speedy recovery.
Hey there! How is the mobi c holding up? I’m debating even having the surgery, so any info would be wonderful. Thank you.
Hello, Thanks for asking. I’m still doing really well.
Dr McClure, Thanks for your video. I'm glad you've found relief in your surgery. How are you doing at the 4+ year mark? Its been recommended I have ADR. Surgeon recommended c5-c6 (disc bulge & nerve impingement right) . But there is foraminal narrowing at c4-c5 left (no disc bulge). C6-c7 have foraminal narrow ing on left with minimal disc bulge. Surgeon may also want to replace c4-c5. Surgeon and I are going to discuss c4-c5 vs C6-c7. I'm sold on ADR but extremely nervous. I don't want another surgery later on or a fusion. I'd rather resolve all issues only once. Did your Dr recommend other aerobic exercises other than walking. Maybe exercise bike? I have morton's neuroma in both feet making walking difficult (more surgery). Also you said you jet ski? Any problems there? Hopefully some day I can ride motorcycle again. Any thoughts?
Hello, I’m glad you found the video helpful. It sounds like you have several different cervical spine levels with different pathologies. My strongest recommendation is for you to simply discuss with your doctor the possibility of disc replacement instead of fusion. Surgeons are trained to do fusion and are less trained to do disc replacement. Again, I think you just need to tell your doctor that you might prefer disc replacement and have a healthy discussion about it. It will be five years this coming July since my surgery. I’m happy to say I am still doing very well. After one week my doctor basically told me to do whatever exercise I could tolerate. I promise you that I can JetSki, ride a bike, play tennis, run, do yardwork, and any other things that I want to do. Honestly, my neck never limits me, but it certainly did before my surgery. Let me know how you do. All the best.
@@dannymcclure1932 I'm already sold on disc replacement. I don't like it but better than the alternative. I can't seem to pin the orthopedic surgeon down on which levels need to be done. I have no argument about c5-c6. He is leaning towards c4-c5 as a second level. To me my symptoms seem to point to c6-c7 as supported by MRI showing minimal disc bulge. We both agree to do as little as possible but I don't want to have to go through this again in 6 months to a year.

Hi Dr. Can you sleep any position you want after surgery??
Hi Julio, thanks for asking. Yes, in general, I can sleep in any position that I want. It’s been 4 1/2 years now since my surgery. There are some brief moments during my waking hours that I lay on my left side and have my head tilted in an unusual and extreme manner that I feel a little pain and very slight radiation into my right arm; however, it is very mild. I do not think I have ever awakened at night from sleep with any pain at all in my neck. I continue to be very surprised and thankful for the response I’m having. Wishing you the best on your decisions with your condition. Merry Christmas.

Is disc replacement same as fusion ?
No, disc replacement is definitely different from disc fusion. Disc fusion “fuses” two (or more) vertebrae together. This allows for the bulging disc to be removed, but the vertebrae of the spine are “fused” together making one functionally large bone. This limits the range of motion of the spine and puts more strain on the discs that are above and below the fused vertebrae. Replacement discs literally replaces the ruptured discs. This allows for normal range of motion and does not place extra strain on any discs of the spine. Does this make sense?
Hello my friend, I underwent the surgery 20 days ago, there is pain in the arm and numbness. I cannot carry anything. What is the reason for how long until the symptoms of muscle pain go away Thank you my friend
I am sorry to hear that you are continuing to have pain and weakness. Did your surgeon have success with the surgery? Was he/she able to accomplish the procedure well? It can take a nerve up to six months to recover from the pinching or other injury that occurred. It sometimes just simply takes more time. Are you going to be doing any physical therapy? Often times physical therapy helps the healing process. Please keep me informed of your progress.
@@dannymcclure1932 An excellent surgeon with experience, but I was in advanced stages of the disease, which led to myelopathy, which also led to another cartilage, because of my negligence. Belgium
Hi Dan! Thanks for sharing. Have a question for you. Why did you have symptoms in both of your arms? Was your cord being pinched?
Great question. My symptoms were worse on the right side. The bulging disc was bulging on the right and left. :-( Still doing well now almost 4 years after surgery.
I want to ask you my friend, is it correct that he puts a substance between the cartilages and it is fixed between the cartilages. I am tired of thinking fear to the extent that I have become obsessed.
Good question. It depends on which exact surgical procedure you are having performed. In the case of disc replacement, there is a piece of metal and plastic that is placed between two of the vertebrae (bones) of the spine. This device allows for the bones to move independently (as they do ordinarily) and to provide space between the vertebra that allows for nerves to exit the spinal cord and not be pinched. So yes, there is a substance placed in your spine, and this is exactly what is needed to fix the problem. Does this make sense? :-)
Hello, I want to ask you a question, is there an unbearable pain after surgery? I have the same problem
Thank you for asking. The pain was not excruciating after surgery, but I was definitely in pain. Consider watching this video. th-cam.com/video/Ix4XsMU0phw/w-d-xo.html It is a video I did the day of my surgery. Let me know how you are doing.

Hi Dr McClure - Thank you video, encouraging to me. I have issues with C5-C6 and C6-C7. Also have bone spurs and posterior osteophytes. I have been taking two medications for almost a year and half. Tramadol and Lyrica. I don't want to increase the dosage. I have also had radio frequency ablation to rule out facet syndrome. and also had ESI at c6-c7 levels. ESI at c6-c7 helped, but only for temporarily. Additionally, discomfort never went away. Now I am considering C5-C6/C6-C7 two levels mobi-c disc replacement. My questions are: 1) Were you on these types of medications for this chronic pain? If so, how long after the surgery you stopped taking? 2) Since I work from home and don't need to drive, my doctor thinks I can get back to work in a week - still advises to do surgery on Thursday or Friday and take the next week off, so I can rest for two weekends. Is this enough? I work for clients, I need to be firm. 3) I am physically fine, no weakness, no muscle loss, no imbalance, great grip test, It's just constant pain and discomfort keeps nagging me. It's been going on for almost 4 years. In your opinion, should I put off for little longer? 4) My doctor says bone spurs and osteophytes will be cleaned out during the disc replacement. Did have these issues as well?
Hi Amal, I’m very sorry to hear about your difficulties. I actually had very similar findings on my MRI. I actually was only taking over-the-counter pain medicines, not Lyrica or tramadol. I, like you, did not have really any significant muscle weaknesses or other problems. For me, it was pain and, in hindsight, very poor posture has this minimized my pain… I just simply didn’t stand erect. In hindsight, I wish I had had my surgery earlier. After all that you’ve been through and the medications you are currently taking, it sounds like a very reasonable consideration to have this surgery. I was back to work in one week. I drove to work and back. I don’t do heavy labor, so I made it OK. If I did heavy Labor, then I am sure I would not have gone back to work within one week. I expect you would be fine returning to work in one week. Wishing you the very best.
@@dannymcclure1932 Thank you very much.
you dont have pain anymore?
Hi Ken, honestly, my neck is not perfectly free of pain. I have a few other discs that are bulging, and these cause me some pain. I have a little bit of arthritis, and this also causes me some pain. The disc that was replaced caused a very intense and burning pain. It felt like someone was stabbing me in my neck and upper back, and this radiated intensely down my arm. THIS type pain is gone. Also, the range of motion of my neck and my posture are soooo much better. If my overall pain before surgery = 100, then my pain now = 15. 😊
@@dannymcclure1932 thanks for your reply. well I haver cervical reverse lordosis. I got herniated disc mainly c4-6. I am considering surgery later on as I am only 40 yrs and will most probably need surgery. I get lots of pain in my shoulder blade/upper back also at neck and some head tension. Im from Mauritius and will need to travel to uk for surgery. However with covid, i dont even know when the plane will fly. But with the reverse curve of my neck will most probably do ACDF. But I would have so much prefer to do ADR.

Thank you! I was just told by a pain management doctor that disc replacements are a thing of the past. No one gets disc replacements. I’m so upset. I can’t believe pain management doctors could tell me that. Can you please lmk how I can avoid ignorance? I’m in so much pain.
I’m sorry that you have not been given thorough information Michelle. Our healthcare system owes you education and a good explanation of the pros & cons of all of your treatment options. Honestly, I think you owe yourself a second opinion from another pain management physician as well as an orthopedic surgeon. My surgery was more than 2.5 years ago, and treatments certainly can change over this period of time. To my knowledge, disc replacement continues to be a rather innovative and advanced approach to treating most disc pathologies and is not “a thing of the past.” Please keep me up to date on your process. Wishing you safety and health at this time.
@@dannymcclure1932 sir I was diagnosed with herniated cervical disc just like you c5 c6 and there is weakness in the forearms + scapular winging and some dysfunction in the surrounding muscles I wanna replace my discs but probably we don’t have artificial discs here they still stick to the fusion here in Saudi even that not possible yet I really wonder what’s the point of postponement! once a disc herniate even if the annulus healed on its own most like will reherniate! isn't it? one last question sir , is that prolonged inflammation of the nerves could lead to chronic problems to the nerves or something? thank you so much for reading my message and I’m so happy that you doing well with the new discs :)

Danny McClure thanks for responding I truly appreciate it. Also was the surgery expensive or did you have a deductible from insurance if you don't mind me asking?
@@jarviusgregory5433 My surgery was actually covered by a workers' compensation as my initiating accident was work-related. The surgeons's office staff should be able to tell you your out-of-pocket expenses, but that may only be for just the surgeon. If you have the time to answer I'll give you my situation. After having arm pain and upper chest pain an mri revealed I had a herniated disc at c5c6. I have done 2 months of physical therapy and I am scheduled for an epidural steroid injection. After reading up on the injection and seeing all the risks and possible side effects I really don't want to go through with it. My pain has decreased to the point now of more discomfort than real pain. My neurosurgeon had me do x rays to see if I'm a candidate for the mobi c procedure and I'll see him next week to discuss it. My question is what are your thoughts on the injection, and since my pain has decreased could I avoid the surgery as well? I worry that doing the surgery would open pandoras box to more future surgery in my neck. I also have other issues like you in my neck like arthritis and osteophytes
Hi Mr. Henry, I’m sorry to hear about your situation. Thanks for checking in with me. I do believe the injections could be helpful for you. It’s encouraging that your symptoms have diminished. I think this is a good sign that you will have a good recovery, hopefully fully and without symptoms. Feel free to contact me if I can help in anyway further. All the very best!

@@amalshrestha5819 Sorry to hear about your situation. I ultimately still haven't had surgery. My pain levels have decreased significantly with time and conservative treatments. What has made the biggest changes for me was the physical therapy, acupuncture, and a complete revamp of my diet. The acupuncture was very effective and decreasing pain and the stress that comes with the pain. As far as diet I've eliminated a few foods and added a ton of foods that are naturally anti inflammatory. I am not taking any medications for the my neck. Just stretching and eating well at this point. I still have a bad day here and there but they are getting a little further apart. I am a year and a half in on this journey. Is this for every one !! Or doctors will recommend which one best for the situation 🤔🤔thanks n I hope you feel better been going through this pain for 15 months n I can just imagine how you felt
Moe Moe, hello, you ask a very good question. I would think this is definitely a consideration for all patients until there’s a proven reason to do another option like the fusion surgery. As a doctor, honestly, we fall into a tendency of doing what we are most familiar with and most comfortable with. The disc replacement is newer than the fusion surgery. Some doctors simply do what they are most comfortable doing instead of what might be a better option for their patient. For me, I really pushed my doctor to consider the disc replacement surgery. Ultimately, he was comfortable in doing this surgery for me, and it all worked out incredibly well. Certainly, your doctor needs to agree. You cannot force your doctor to do something he/she cannot do or does not think is the right thing for you. I am very thankful I had the disc replacement surgery. I’m doing incredibly well now almost 3 years after my surgery.
Danny McClure glad you’re doing good n thanks you for replying my doctor sent me for CT after my MRI n he said it will show more n based on the found of the CT will figure out what’s best for me the problem is I have 4 discs that herniated so I am not really sure what will happen so another couple of days n we will find out ... thanks again my friend be safe
Moe Moe , Now that I hear more of your situation, one thing that the science and medical literature is not as confident in is doing multiple disc replacements in the same area. If you have four discs that are herniated, then fusion could be a better option. I would definitely ask your surgeon what he thinks about disc replacement. Please keep me posted on things. Wishing you the very best! God bless you.
Danny McClure I will I will find out in a few days but I do remember my doctor mentioned fusion
Moe Moe Fusion is definitely the most common procedure after removing a herniated disc. I recommend simply asking your doctor if you might be a good candidate for disc replacement instead of fusion. Have a conversation about it. See what he thinks.
I am starting physical therapy that was prescribed by a spinal surgeon for c5-6 herniation and also the c7 mildly herniated. He wants me to do physical tgerapy and then re-evaluate for possible surgery. I was told of the mobi c by an acquaintance who has had it done. How long are these good for and are the surgery risks worth it? Thank you for any information you're willing to provide. I am 38 and this is all very concerning to me.
Hi Robert, it sounds like your surgeon is recommending the right things with physical therapy. In my understanding and experience, a disc replacement like the Mobi-C lasts a very long time with less complications and risks than the traditional surgical correction of fusion (where two independent vertebrae and locked together via a metal plate). Ultimately, you want to try to avoid surgery, but if physical therapy and other more conservative approaches are not working for you, then disc replacement is, for most people, a very viable option! For me in my circumstances, the risks were VERY much worth it. It has been almost 3 years since my surgery. I'm playing tennis with my son tonight, and that's actually not something I was able to tolerate before my surgery. Wishing you the very best!
@@dannymcclure1932 Thank you for the information sir. I am trying to avoid the surgery at all costs if possible. Sounds like if I have to though the mobi c is the direction I would want to lean. Thank you again

Doctor, I would like to ask you a question, that disc movic when you undergo surgery does not leave your vertebrae, you can lead a normal life.
Hi Yanaisa, you are correct. The replacement disc is attached the to bones of the neck. After a few weeks of healing, it does not move and remains where the surgeon intends for it to be. Wishing you the best for your surgery.
