Kenya Kiondo Project

In a rural area of Kenya women who are part of an adult literacy group have committed to an alternate rite of passage for their daughters so that they will not suffer through FGM (Female Genital Mutilation). In turn they have the opportunity to learn to make kiondos, a crocheted type of basket that is bringing acclaim to the makers and much needed income to their communities.
Ecuador Intag Sisal

In the cloud forest of the Intag Valley a group of nearly 40 women crochet, knit and weave, sisal that they have processed and dyed with the jungle's multitude of natural dyes. Their efforts are providing their families with much needed income as an alternative to mining, preventing multinational corporations who want to mine the valley for copper. These products are 100% natural and sustainable.
Mexico Lacemakers of Presa de Barajas

In the small community of Presa de Barajas in Jalisco women create tatted (a kind of lace making) jewelry. In just a short time they have become respected designer artisans in the state and have gained financial independence thanks to their hard work and ingenuity.

Living in the village of La Calara in Ecuador, the women of Sumak Muyo create sustainable jewelry made from the tagua palm nut. The income they generate supports a number of causes that benefit families in this indigenous community. An added benefit is that members of the group have found that coming together to create, provides a safe place to share concerns, hopes and dreams.
Tharu Basketmakers of Nepal

The Tharu people live in what is known as the Terai in southern Nepal very near the world famous Chitwan National Park where it is still possible to see wild rhinos. Tharu women are famous for there baskets made of elephant grass. Learn about the Tharu people and basket makers.
Mordanting Silk & Wool

Set your sewing machine at the longest/widest basting stitch if you want to give this a try. Be sure to have a seam ripper for when it's time to take out the stitches.

Do you think this kind of technique would work on a thicker medium like a shammy? (The PVA cloth divers use to dry themselves). Thanks!
I think it would work because people do use this technique on hand woven wool fabrics but I think there will be less detail upon thicker fabrics.

We need not wash out alum, under runny water or mild soap or so.. after a night soak?? And just dry?
Great video. I’ve found that my scrunching is much easier if I scrunch as I wrap. I’ll wrap a few inches, then scrunch, then wrap some more.

Turned out beautifully. Still not sure what the tiny bits of cloth are for…
I think it’s to reinforce the knot at the end when you pull the thread to gather it so it doesn’t shatter? One side has the thread and the other doesn’t from what I can see. And then 2 of her lines break.. so even with the reinforcement, it could be difficult. It has to be really really tight for shibori, so the dye does not penetrate those areas.

Can it be machine stitched?
I haven't tried it but it would be worth experimenting. You would need a long basting stitch.
