    Greetings from Mindanao. This old, retired American Soldier lives down here with his lovely Filipina and our daughter. I took my first flight in any kind of aircraft in a UH-1H at Fort Jackson, SC on 25 JUL 1987. I'll never forget it. I qualified as an expert with the M-16 and got to fly back to the barracks with the other experts from my BCT company. 🇺🇸🇵🇭

    Such a coincidence - I'm currently building a scale model of that same exact plane behind you lol. So sad we couldn't squeeze out more airframe hours out of those jets. By the time these were retired in 2005 they were already well-worn. The Toyota Corolla of fighter jets.

      @airdog916 Thanks. I have contacted my Congressman office and their attitude is essentially, 'well that's how the system works. It takes a long time and it appears to be working just fine. ' Crazy. In what universe would this process be considered 'fine?' Also, there's the distinct possibility we could get a decision, after waiting 2 years, that goes something like this, 'rejected, declined, denounced, you ain't getting in.' Then they'll add the famous last word, 'sorry.'

  • @kenlandgren4701
    @kenlandgren4701 ปีที่แล้ว

    I grew up in the PI and here is my story: BAMBOO BOWL When the night appeared, the bright lights were turned on and there was magic in the air. We were gridiron gladiators. The passion of my life in the PI was playing football. In retrospect I can’t fathom how we tolerated practicing in the summer heat. It reached 100 degrees in summer and the humidity was unbearable. I started playing football when I was 10. I was not good; I was average at best. However, I went through a transformation and eventually became a decent football player. I had so much fun playing football and have so many fond memories. My first and only puppy love was with Chrissy. She was a cheerleader for my team. She was a blonde and cute as a button, and I was smitten with her. Chrissy was 9 and I was 10. She said something to me that had wisdom much beyond her years when she said it is OK not to be the best football player on the field because it was obvious that I was not a good football player. It is kind of funny she loved ABBA and sang their songs, so I loved them as well. I was so smitten with Chrissy. I wonder how her life turned out? When I entered my teen years I went through a transformation as a player because I had really good endurance. I unknowingly built up my tremendous endurance by running while my friends rode bikes in the hot sun. It was crazy I chose to run, and I even ran wearing flip flops. I was always the first to finish laps at football practice. I was competitive and wanted to be the best. My endurance helped me in football games because I was never tired. At one practice after a game the coach gave us an ass chewing and told us we played like shit in our last game. He angrily said everyone played like shit except for Ken as he pointed at me. At that time, I was the youngest and smallest player on the team. I really had no clue that I had played well in the game. I was just doing my best. The other players appeared pissy and angry as they looked at me. That same season our practices were held near the MAC terminal and there were no bus stops nearby. Every day after practice I walked from the terminal to the front gate. It was unfair but I accepted my fate because I thought it was normal. It was a price I was willing to pay to play. What allowed me to evolve as a player was my propensity to play touch football during recess. I honed in on my skills to avoid being touched. That is how I played tackle football, if they can’t touch me, they can’t tackle me. I was short and when I took the handoff I was crouched, and the defense did not know where I was. I did have some jackass moments like I took the kickoff and was going to run it in for a for a touchdown and decided to hurdle a player who was on the ground instead of running around him. Well, that bastard tripped me up. One game on the first play, I got pitch to the right and ran past the defense except for one opposing player. I ran straight at him to show that he could not tackle me on my 70-yard TD run. Yes I was a jackass. I followed a ritual on game day. I was excited all day long and my mind was in the clouds. After school I checked my uniform for all the pads and inspected my helmet to include my mouthpiece. My mother fixed me a bowl of ramen. Upon arrival to the stadium, we stretched out and did calisthenics. It was much cooler at night and the bright lights were turned on. I always had a strong feeling of butterflies in my stomach until kickoff, then my butterflies disappeared. The brightly lit field became our stage. It was game on!

    In summer of either '63-'64 a message was posted on the side wall of Kelly Theater that all medical personnel report IMMEDIATELY to their station(s). A plane with passengers had crashed. It apparently caught a downdraft while approaching the runway, hit a taxi cab and careened across the highway leading to the main gate. I helped by retrieving personal belongings but the stench was so strong I gave up. A truly horrific time.
