Harmonica Tongue Slap Practice Method
This exercise routine will help you develop muscle strength in your tongue. This will be an invaluable aid to your harmonica playing generally, no matter what style you play. This is a useful addition to your practice routine and it takes about 2 minutes to run through the exercise. Don't forget to speed up the metronome once you get comfortable at 90BPM.

During gigs with my Band - Ricky Cool and the In Crowd, I often play chord accompaniment by holding a number of different key/tuning harmonicas. I would really like to use a chord harmonica and maybe I should take the plunge with this song.

What do harmonica players mean when they talk about playing in 1st position, 2nd position or 3rd position etc. Hopefully, watching this video will help clear up the mystery.

When we do encore's with the Band, we usually end with our version of 'The Liquidator.' Key C - F Harmonica 2nd position. I only play a draw chord and blow chord throughout the whole number, just varying the rhythm at key moments. It's more difficult than it seems.

Great video! Whats the difference between minor pentatonic and minor blies scale? Thanks!
@@johnnymercer8766 Hi Johnny. There is one extra note in the minor blues scale. The flattened 5th. So starting from C, the minor pentatonic would be C, Eb, F, G, Bb, C and the minor blues scale would be C, Eb, F, Gb, G, Bb, C. I can go through this when we look at scales practice in our lesson next week. Best wishes, Ricky
@rickycool100 thanks and yes can't wait really looking forward to it thanks :)
Thanks! Just the kind of exercise I need to get started in the morning😊
Thanks, Mr. C. I appreciate your time and sharing.
How did it play out of the box? Did it need gapping?
@@chasingpsychos889 Hi. The demo is out of the box. I made no adjustments. 👍
@@rickycool100 Thanks Ricky. Does it bend well on holes 2 & 3?
@ Yes it does. The note bending is very similar to a regular diatonic.
@@rickycool100 Thanks again Ricky
Mine arrived today and I have to say it’s the best playing “out of the box” harp I’ve ever bought! No reed adjustments needed at all, and it really is a game changer! No more missed overblown/overdrawn notes for me! 😊
P.S do you teach in london at all? Thanks
Hey great video. I was wondering if you could do a video on the top 5 scales everyone needs, so for example minor blues in 3rd position, 2nd position blues etc. I am low intermediate and really want a daily practice routine based on scales followed by a backing track for each one. Im really enjoyong playing over BB king minor blues in 3rd position right now for example but I want to branch out and learn more scales and make sure i am playong these scales fully! Thanks
@@johnnymercer8766 Hi John. That’s a great idea for a video. I’ll see if I can put something suitable together. Re your lessons enquiry I’ve replied to your contact through my Band website. Best wishes, Ricky
I was wondering if you could do a definitive breakdown of the main acales every harmonica player should know? Say the top 5? I find it really difficult to know these the difference between say minor blue 3rd position and 3rd pentatonic.
Very cool. Thanks
So beautiful
Thanks!
Could you write down the tabs, how many blows on 6 before going to 4 if you understand my question :)
@@fabians3587 Hi there. Phrase 1 is: 6, 6, 6, -6, -6, 6, 6. Phrase 2: -6, -6, -4, -4, -4, -4, 5, -4, 4, 4. Hope that helps. You don’t have to be too precise. The main thing is to play the phrases with conviction and attitude as I say in the video. Best wishes, Ricky
Great explanation. I've been playing my interpretation of this song and felt like I was missing that 4th.
Sweet lick. Thank you.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Man, you do me justice with your sharing. I got this right off.
Thank you, Mr. C. (There's a signature riff that Lester Young performed. I've been trying to work on it. The riff is highlighted on a recording of Jazz At The Philharmonic with Charlie Parker. In the '80s, Verve issued its "Jazz 'Round Midnight" series. Great series. I believe I own every artist's issue and the featured instrumentals such as sax, trumpet, etc. The Charlie Parker album features "Embraceable You" with Flip Phillips and Lester Young on tenor sax. Check out that riff by "Prez". Ray Brown-bass Buddy Rich-drums Hank Jones-piano Tommy Turk-trombone Roy Eldridge-trumpet)
@@claydobbins9342 Hi Clay. Happy New Year. I will check this out. Thanks for the ‘heads up.’ Best wishes, Ricky

Great video Ricky thank you. What are you doing for the V chord ? Thanks Anthony
Good stuff!
This is superb instruction. Thank you for taking the time to make this.
very great explanation, so helpful!!
My husband is a professional harmonica player and says he loves your tid bits
Great job
Oh man, you need to do this with tabs and timings... your too professional for beginners lol
@@rickyfinn2763 Hi Ricky. If I get a chance I’ll try and sort that out. It would be useful. Thanks, Ricky
@@rickyfinn2763 Hi again Ricky. I’ve just checked the video and the TAB is in the description. A minus before a number means draw, number on its own is blow -3” = full step bend on 3 draw. In terms of timings there is no substitute for repeated listening to the recording and trying to copy the timing. When you think you’ve got it, record yourself and compare to the original. I hope this helps. Best wishes and good luck. Ricky
@rickycool100 oh man you legend thank you!!!! L9ve the fact you went on and actually helped, not just me but many others no doubt! Thanks again, I'll get this down soon. Champion!!!
Thank you for turning me on to Gene Ammons, will check him out asap, however either way , on sax or harp...THAT WAS SOME MELANCHOLIC TUNE that resolved or back to tonic...it was bonified groovy BLUES! I've never came across Mr Ammons name...1,000 thankies

Thank you. Gene Ammons was greatly underappreciated.
simply wonderful❤❤
Damn cool. Great help!

Thanks Ricky! I had been avoiding the 7 draw in 3rd position, but you show it can be used! Cool lick!

One of the sharpest dressed and one of my favorite TH-cam harmonica players! Keep it coming man !
@@lesliewest815 Thanks Leslie on both counts 😊
What a pleasant surprise that you are into zydeco as well, that harp is so versatile !!! just like an accordion, a very upbeat grove, I just heard an old scatman crothers song " keep that coffee hot" that would sound good on harp instead of sax, check out john brims original song ice cream man, not van halens, there's some nice harp on that. Cheers from blustery frozen NY!
@@greghagos Thanks Greg and for the tips. I will check them out. I used to do John Brim’s ‘Be Careful’ which was a great song. Best wishes, Ricky
Thank you for a peek into your performance, Mr. C., I really appreciate it.
I would like to ask , how much holes should chromatic harmonica have to play this melody?
@@Pount-r6w Hi. I’m just using a regular 12 hole chromatic like a Hohner 270. A 10 hole chromatic like a hohner 260 would also work. Best wishes, Ricky

Hi Ricky, that's the harp that I was referring to in the comments to your baggy trousers video. Another point worth making is that it's vaulveless making service and tuning easier. There are also other tunings available, but not so easy to buy as yet in this country.
@@richardhonour1522 Hi Richard. Yes, it’s your comment that spiked my interest and led me to buy one. I do like the harmonica and will probably get one in A as well at some point. Thanks, Ricky

Now that Mr Cool has shown us a slider he has now advanced in my mind to the status of being the DUANE ALLMAN of slide harmonica, it sounds great! NEVER SEEN ONE! Ata boy Sir Cool!
