Are these traditional songs? Is there a "set list"? I'm American but I want to learn and understand some of this awesome music. You guys sound awesome btw
yes they are. they are in bania and you also have them in berber or mixed language
Yes they are traditional. The songs come from slavery days when Africans from West and Central Africa were taken to Morocco. They used their shackles to make music (the karkaba or metal castanets represent this) and the guembri (string instrument) represents the boats the slaves were transported with. The songs are sung in Darija (Moroccan Arabic) and a mix of Bambara (A mix of old African languages not be confused with the language of Bambara spoken in present day Mali) and some songs are sung entirely in Bambara. It’s much like blues music and is called Moroccan blues because it comes from a time of suffering and in the songs they sing to saints and prophets asking for freedom and help just like how black Americans would sing about their struggles. The songs also use a West African style of call and response singing. One last thing is that im actually the son of the man in orange playing what we call a guembri which is made from wood, camel skin and goat intestines. You can search Maalem Boujemaa Bouboul (My father) or Maalem Monssif Bouboul (My brother) and videos will show of more Gnawa (the name of the music)
