John Kirkpatrick - That Great Christmas Pud
I mean to say, the time-honoured name of Birkenhead- my home- is not mentioned in this version of the song: but any man who knows his history will be well aware which yard Mr Laird founded and ran. Oh to be a shipbuilder for the Rebels...
only two comments? I am astonished, I am amaze that this doesn't have more engagement. But allow me to tell you this: this is a proud song for the good townsfolk of Birkenhead.
Great stuff
"God of our fathers, known of old, Lord of our far-flung battle line, Beneath whose awful hand we hold Dominion over palm and pine - Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet, Lest we forget-lest we forget! The tumult and the shouting dies; The Captains and the Kings depart: Still stands Thine ancient sacrifice, An humble and a contrite heart. Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet, Lest we forget-lest we forget! Far-called, our navies melt away; On dune and headland sinks the fire: Lo, all our pomp of yesterday Is one with Nineveh and Tyre! Judge of the Nations, spare us yet, Lest we forget-lest we forget! If, drunk with sight of power, we loose Wild tongues that have not Thee in awe, Such boastings as the Gentiles use, Or lesser breeds without the Law- Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet, Lest we forget-lest we forget! For heathen heart that puts her trust In reeking tube and iron shard, All valiant dust that builds on dust, And, guarding, calls not Thee to guard; For frantic boast and foolish word- Thy Mercy on Thy People, Lord!"
this is drill music for the 18th century 😅❤️
I can't thank you enough for putting this on TH-cam, it's the only way I can easily share some of English folk music's finest recordings. Cheers!
Words by Rudyard Kipling.

This song is actually supposed about Henry VIII. The Mary Rose was designed in 1509, just after Henry VII died. She was a pet project of young King Henry.
Give a listen to Mike Agranoff's version
I love the story this song tells
Gorgeous song! I wish it had more views!
Best version...

Where did you learn this song? I've been looking but can't find any history about it, ie region or any other recordings. Beautiful song!
Celebrated Working Man is originally from the Pennsylvania coalfields apparently , brought to the Durham coalfield around the early 1900's. Oakey Pit Evictions is one of Tommy Armstrong (the Pitman Poet) songs, also from Durham (England).
Funnily enough this same tune is used in a couple of American Civil War songs as well
Dont u give a f about these english people have u got a black heart
A VERY SAD SONG
So glad to have a way to sing these words. Kipling wrote so many many great lyrics, and this is a wonderful song to sing near hives abs flowers.
For some reason this has been stuck in my head for the last couple weeks
just think over 2500 years later people are still proclaiming Cyrus II of Persia's greatest victory
What a song!
A song truly inhabits you , when you find yourself singing it acapella from start to end.And should a few spoons be within your reach,...well...
Frankie Armstrong and Roy Bailey brought me here
Just brilliant ❤
Dot hear that accent no mre !
with Heather Wood harmony vocals his former bandmate in The Young Tradition
We had not been sailing but four frosty nights, But four frosty nights and five days; When there we espied a lofty tall ship, Come a-bearing down on us, brave boys. “Hallo and hallo, you lofty tall ship, What makes you to sail so nigh?” “I’m a rich merchant’s ship bound for London Town Won’t you please pull to and let me pass by.” “Oh no and oh no, you lofty tall ship, Such a thing well it never won’t be. For I am turned robber all on the salt sea For to maintain my two brothers and I.” “So it’s let out your courses and let go of your main sheets And bring your ship under my lee. And I will take from you your rich merchant’s good, merchant’s goods, And point your bow guns to the sea.” “I won’t let out my courses nor let go of my main sheets Nor bring my ship under your lee. And you shan’t tear from me my rich merchant’s good, merchant’s goods, Nor point my bow guns to the sea.” So it’s broadside and broadside these vessels did lay For fully two hours or more. Until Henry Martin gave him the death shot And she sank and she never rose more. Bad news I’ve to tell you, bad news I’ve to tell, Bad news I’m a-going to tell. Of a lofty tall ship and she’s passed away And the most of her mariners drowned.
Brilliant, lived at Bellman 33 years, knew John Peel came to Bellman hence the name name from when the pub [farmhouse in my days] was Hark to Bellman, researched the area since 1992 never came across this song until Bridget from Rydal just across the road from Bellman posted it...Brilliant.
Chills every time
This stayed in my head and my heart and soul for decades. So beautiful and honesr in love for Our Lord!
43:35 John Tams in an English Folk channel? Now that's soldiering!
phenominal
Ever since I first heard this song, I find myself singing on average once a week.
This is fantastic. Thank you for sharing.
We can add a new verse about the hoards from the Middle East; from Africa; from the Subcontinent. This song is more relevant today than it has been in a thousand years. This land remains ours!
This an old song. I have always loved it.
I came here because I cannot stop clicking on the church.
It’s FANNY Blair, not SUNNY … but it’s a great pleasure to hear this recording!
Supper fine folk song and sung

Rap ’er to bank, my canny lad! Wind ’er away, keep turnin! The back-shift men are comin’ hame, They’ll be back here in the mornin’. My father used to call the turn When the lang shift it was all over. And comin’ by, ye’d hear him cry; You know it’s after four? He cried: Rap ’er to bank, my canny lad! Wind ’er away, keep turnin! The back-shift men are comin’ hame, They’ll be back here in the mornin’. And when that awful day arrived, On the last shift for me father, A fall of stones and broken bones, But still above the clatter, he cried: Rap ’er to bank, my canny lad! Wind ’er right slow, that’s clever! This old lad he’s taken bad, He’ll be back here never '
I had this on The Young Tradition Sampler.
Nice to hear song about an old town a few miles from my Airmyn. But the nearest hill is more than ten mile from Howden.
I remember hearing Bernard Wrigley, Gary and Vera Aspey, and Wilf Darlington singing this song on Folk on Two (BBC Radio 2) several decades ago. Bernard took the lead part, croaking away in his famous "Bolton Bullfrog" voice, and managing to make my headphones throb as he hit the low note on that final phrase "on his way to his home down in HELL". A very memorable performance!
His rhythm is also brilliant and endlessly interesting. I feel like I’ve heard this singing for centuries
The fiddle in this song is absolutely intoxicating
