Cozy Graphic Novel Reading Vlog 🌈 bugs, animal crossing, succulents
I read Childhood’s End in September and just recently watched the TV mini series. It didn’t quite work for me as a novel but I was interested in the ideas presented. I didn’t think that much of Brooklyn when I read it 2-3 years ago but a lot of detail and feeling from that book has stayed with me. There is a sequel that was recently published but I haven’t had much interest in picking it up. The Thing with Feathers sounds like something I would like!
@@katsbooks2631 I really don't know anything about Childhood's End and now you're making me curious!
It’s an interesting book for sure. I’m glad I read it even if I didn’t think it was well-crafted.
The wild robot sequels were good too. I found myself reading them around the same time as Becky Chambers and it felt like a comforting pairing. Thanks for another book list with a lot of variety!
@@debtomaselli4586 oooh, I should check out those sequels! 😊🧡 thanks
Happy birthday!
@@geraldinegranger9186 thank you 😊 💛
World Made By Hand has been on my want to read list for so many years I forgot it’s a novel. I was thinking it was nonfiction. I need to read it!
@@katsbooks2631 it sounds really cool!
❤
@@claudianunez8983 😊
The LFL looks good! What did you not like about the Avi Steinberg book? It seems interesting.
@@katsbooks2631 it had too much dehumanizing language for me. There was a description of three women prisoners that made me upset.
I should mention, since recording I've read Glowrushes as well and its plot summary is NOT what chat gpt supplied. It's about the relationship between a sickly boy and an artist hired to paint a mural in the boy's room. Super recommend it. Made me sob.
Nice list of witch books. You may like a book about THE Wicked Witch - "Margaret Hamilton From Cleveland Ohio to the Land of Oz " detailing her journey from kindergarten teacher to becoming the Wicked Witch. She was a kindergarten teacher before becoming an actress.
@@donbillie1883 wow, sounds like an interesting life!
@JennyFernBooks Indeed!
I'm usually a short book girl too, but right now I'm reading Les Miserables. I have Travels With Charley on audio - I'm enjoying it. I've heard Jennifer Ackerman is great, but I've not tried any yet. Happy reading!
@@debtomaselli4586 thank you! 😊 Is Les Miserables going well for you?
@JennyFernBooks yeah, I'm going easy on myself with it - 10 pages a day. I'm 500 pages into it now. I'm learning lots of cool things!
Why would anyone say no to free lemons? I always have lemons in the house. They’re very multipurpose. I hate deckled edges for that very reason! I also dislike French flaps; they are unnecessary.
@@katsbooks2631 it's funny how my book preferences have changed. I used to be like French flaps and deckled edges = fancy. But now I know my real book preference is a soild mass market paperback (as long as the book isn't super long)
I can’t stand mass market paperbacks either! They only work if a book is shorter. I prefer a floppy trade paperback one that will stay open to the page on its own. None of the fancy stuff for me!
yayyy netgalley is so much fun!! it can get overwhelming with how much is available but it’s such a great resource to stay up to date with new releases
I'll just have to keep my head and not try to read every single thing that sounds cool!
Happy belated birthday (can’t remember if I already said that on another video)! I love reading plays, but I haven’t read any this year and I’m not sure why. I read Travels with Charley more than a decade ago so I can’t remember it now but I think I really liked it back then. What is this selling books by the inch? I don’t understand the reasoning behind that.
@@katsbooks2631 I'm really not sure why they sell by the inch, tbh, but they had a lot of used books and were trying to raise some money. What are some of your play recommendations?
A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen
Both of Claire Keegan's books are short and just wonderful. "Small Things Like These" is perfect for a winter day. I read it in just two sittings on a divine snowy Sunday earlier this year ❤
@@flickerfan13 I've never read her work before, but that sounds lovely ❤️ thanks for the recommendation!!

I love this! I have been slowly reading through lengthy tomes all year and it will be nice to add a few quality quicker hits to my 2024 reading list. I just picked up Rental Person from my library. I would recommend Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. It’s a short novel that I read earlier this year and has really stuck with me.
@@geraldinegranger9186 omg yes! I love Cannery Row.
TH-cam randomly recommended this video, and I must say, I'm delighted to have found your channel! Hi from a fellow booktuber.

I loved Several People are Typing! Such a weird book. Several of these sound interesting to me-Open Throat, Lemon, Einstein’s Dreams.
@@katsbooks2631 and even if you don't end up liking them, it's such a small time commitment.
Joyful reading vibes. Thanks!
@@Jimi6was9 thanks!
I also wasn’t thrilled with Heretics Anonymous. I liked it, but it also ended up being a teenage love story. I have a hard time enjoying that YA stuff since I’m out of that age range. I’m curious to know your thoughts on The Soul of an Octopus. I haven’t read it. The one book I have read by Sy Montgomery, The Curious Naturalist, I found a boring slog and almost didn’t finish it. But her books are always praised everywhere in the book world.
I'll try to scounge up the video where I rant about The Soul of an Octopus, but in short it was just not my type of book. Too much about random people and not enough about the octopus.

I really like the pig painting! And yay for a Pebble sighting! I’m partial to black cats. 😊
@@katsbooks2631 thank you 😊 Pebble is so cute and sweet but she's also such a shut-in in our bedroom! She really values alone time hahaha
I loved reading aloud 'The Great Good Thing' to my kids several years ago, and Dave Goulson's books are excellent - hard-hitting, but inspiring. ❤ Thanks for sharing these titles! Lots of interesting stuff here. 😊 ~ Kim

i think clare keegan would be my choice for when i'm feeling down and need to be comforted by fiction. ive been rereading her Small Things Like These and Foster a lot especially cuz they are so short. hugely recommend her books. loved the vlog <3

Thank you so much for this video and the recommendations! How did you find these kinds of books?
@@debtomaselli4586 hard to say for all of them, but a combo of picking up various books at thrift stores, and keeping an eye open for things I might be interested in.

Ooooo I read Odessa! A strange little book but I second your recommendation!! 🙌🏻
@@ValerieGeary Oh, glad to hear someone else liked it!
Your description of the difference between the first book being that it's two old men made me laugh. Technically Link is an old man too! Just, not physically or mentally hahahah If you're this interested in zelda stories and really want more, have you ever considered looking for fanfiction? I got into it recently as an adult, and while a fair bit of it is not very good, there are some excellent stories out there. It certainly scratched that itch that had me dying for more botw and totk content hahah If you do decide to look that up, I recommend using Archives of our own. There's a tag for botw/totk and you can sort by "most kudos" that is to say, the works that got the most likes. There tends to be better stuff there (though there are some less good ones that were simply popular and there are some very good works that don't have any traction either, especially when they're published later when most of the fans have moved on). As for actual books, I have a few recommendations of my own! For dragons and various nature vibes and small towns and settlements, I highly recommend the series "The Memoirs of Lady Trent" by Marie Brennan. It is very good. The main female character gives me botw Zelda vibes, as she's very smart, curious and headstrong. Unlike Zelda, Isabella's head is very much full of dragons though rather than technology. I think this series fits what you want perfectly! The first book happens largely in the cold northern mountains of a nearby country. The second book is in the jungles, which reminds me of the Faron woods (and there is a place that reminds me a little of Gerudo town when I think about it). The third book is on the ocean with many coastal cities reminiscent of Lurelin village amongst other features. The fourth book is in the desert, and is the closest to Gerudo town, as both are inspired by Middle eastern roots (though the book is much closer to reality than the highly stylized and fantasy gerudo). The fifth book is in their equivalent of the Himalayas, with some towns that feel a little like Rito village. There is also a common thread through all the books surrounding ancient dragon-worshipers, which also brings back to the Zonai ruins in a way, though they aren't all that similar. There is also a singular follow-up book set a long time after, following Isabella's granddaughter. I wouldn't look it up until you're finished however, as even the blurb contains heavy spoilers for the entire series. Next book I'd recommend is Redwall by Brian Jacques! It's also a series. We follow tiny mice and other various species of cute characters who live in an Abbey and have a quest to follow. The main character reminds me a little of Link. But other aspects you might enjoy are the setting (which explores the vast outdoors, to various degrees from book to book) and the different species that work together or against each other. There are large and small creatures and the Abbey reminds me a little of Tarrey Town, in the idea of all those species coming together and interacting. Minus the whole... huge industry around building things. The food descriptions are as mouth watering as the images of what Link cooks in his wok at the very least hahah And last series recommendation is The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara by Terry Brooks. I have the heavy brick edition that combines all three books, but I don't think it's all that easy to find. I got it at the library book sale a few years back. The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara has a few elements I think you might like! It's got flying ships (though not as insane as the constructs we make in totk hahah), magic, lush and dangerous environments, dangerous robotic(?) ruins that act as tests for the characters to try themselves against to reach their goal. If you liked the weird labyrinths scattered across Hyrule we get a far worse version of that too, mixed with pieces that are reminiscent of Hyrule Castle. It's very bloody, with scary creatures that somehow managed to give me jumpscares through a _book_ of all mediums. But if you're looking for the same feeling Guardians gave all of us when their music started playing, well there's that going on there too! I'd also like to mention that since you read manga, you can actually read the official manga version of all the previous zelda games! I have the book that has the Minish Cap and the Hourglass games' stories. I got mine at a large book store, so they're still selling right now. Not sure if they're working on a botw version or if there ever will be one, seeing as it's open world, but maybe some day! Thank you for the recommendations btw! I'll be checking out Psalm for the Wild-Born. It sounds interesting. Hopefully something in what I shared sounds interesting to you too!
@@ViridianForests oh my goodness, this is THE MOST thoughtful comment 🥰 Thank you so much for the time you put into these recommendations, I truly appreciate it! I can sense a reading vlog based only on this comment coming in the future 😀 & it is A Psalm for the Wild-Built. (Sorry if I said it wrong or mumbled). @@JennyFernBooks Whoops! No, no, sorry I'm the one who messed up the name. Looking forward to seeing that if you do it! You can tell I'm also obsessed with botw/totk hahah. I can't get enough of fantasy that feels grounded in nature Have a nice day!

I loved Eva Ibbotson's books as a kid, specifically Which Witch? and The Secret of Platform 13. The Rope Trick by Lloyd Alexander also has some fab witchy representation! If you like Philip Pullman, I highly recommend Clockwork. One of my all-time faves and it's a great winter read. No explicit witches, but it does have magic!! The Three Dark Crowns series by Kendare Blake was a a fun witchy series (it's not like AMAZING, but I still had FUN). However, the ultimate crowing jewel of witchy books for me is Slewfoot by Brom. Highly highly highly recommend!! Love this video idea! (ᴗ ͜ ᴗ✿)
The Secret of Platform 13!!! Omg that was something from my childhood that has been at the fringes of my memory for years. I must get a copy and read it again. Love the recommendations. I just recently read The Foundling by Lloyd Alexander and I enjoyed it so I really should check out some of his other work.

I unhauled my copy of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance years ago without reading it because I’ve never been able to get a good handle on what that book is actually about. But I’m still interested in it. It sounds like I need to read Ducks because the bits you shared hit close to home. The Ursula K. LeGuin book also sounds interesting. I enjoyed this week of videos!
I told a few people that I'd started reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and one reaction was "that book has absolutely nothing to do with motorcycle maintenance" which has made me even more curious to see what the rest of it is. & thanks 😊
Yay, thanks for trying my recommendations! I’m glad you liked what you read of them. I made my book club read Ducks and they didn’t like it so I’m glad you enjoyed the first bit at least.

Three Cups of Tea has shown up in most of the little free libraries and thrift stores near me. Good choice for a good riddance on that one. I’m going to miss your daily videos! It’s been a work break treat for me to watch this week. 😊
Oh thank you 😊 Yes, I have been having fun with them as well but it's not sustainable long term. I might try some more frequent posting though.
I would also get rid of the Augusten Burroughs book but maybe that’s just me. I agree with another commenter who said The Secret Life of Bees is so easy to find that if you do want to read it later it won’t be difficult to get a copy. I forgot about the Three Cups of Tea story being fabricated! I’m glad I haven’t read it.
I'm so bad at unhauling. I'm like, "well maybe I could just sit down and read this and then I'd know if it was bad"

You're right, I could pick it up again any time! I've tried to read it like 3 times and never got more than a couple pages deep
