XL comes up just below the knee (I am about 187cm). Better fit than the large, but some friction with quad when raising leg for checking, etc. Ordered the SP9 in XL, arriving next week. Will try it out and see how it feels versus the XL SP8.

@@turbo2656 Sure thing. When it comes to protection of the shin, leg, and side knee, I think the SP8 is the most comprehensive. It wraps around the calf more, and the double padding part at the shin region is wider, but not by much. Also with the SP8, the side knee coverage extends higher than what the SP9 offers. That said, I found the side coverage was rubbing against my quad muscle when raising my leg for checking kicks due to its height. It's not that bad, but a bit of an annoyance. As for foot coverage, the reviewer is correct that the SP9 provides full toe coverage, whereas the SP8 is more traditional and extends about halfway across my big toe. At first, I was concerned given that you usually do not want full toe coverage as it can interfere with mobility. I am pleased to say that the SP9 does not do that. I think they designed it so the extended toe coverage part does not slope downward and serve as a tripping hazard. I can run and stand on my tip toes in SP9 with no issues. Overall, I think that the SP9 is indeed the more refined model, because it strikes a perfect balance of coverage and stays contoured to the leg. The SP8 is still the best if coverage is all that matters, but they feel bulkier and are wider. I hope this helps.
