You are clearly doing something completely wrong as I have the same CPU cooler attached to Phenom II X6 3.0 O.C. to 3.5 idle at 30 degrees and max at 45 while running benchmarks. But I did use thermal paste and didn't restrict air-flow.

I would install the clip properly and unless like me im using a Zalman 9300 clip using long screws and lots of washes ;D for the over the top method not so much Tim and use the push pull approach then try plus it sounds like day time where your at you are best to do it at night first then when you happy with the temps run a test on the hottest day of the year

i guess you don't put thermal compound paste on the cpu

I am cooling my i7 3770 non K with www.alternate.de/Enermax/ETS-T40-TB-CPU-K%C3%BChler/html/product/919884? I´ve overclocked my CPU to 4,2 GHZ and it goes to max 66 Celsius. I am very disappointed when water cooling bring your temp close to 100 Celsius.....

I bought a Zalman Reserator 3 max with 1 radiator and I was surprised that in the bios the pump was not showing any sign , at RPM was saying N/A , when I touched the pump, it was very hot , so I returned it and remounted my old air cooler back , I won't buy water cooling anymore .
