Catching GIANT RAINBOW TROUT! - Is this the New Big Trout Lake of Colorado?
Josie and I target walleye and smallmouth bass at Chatfield Reservoir, but instead we find some giant rainbow trout! The trout in Chatfield keep getting bigger and bigger, this is definitely going to be an amazing fishery in a short while.

Fly Fishing in CHEESMAN CANYON on a Snowy Winter Day

I haven't made videos in a while, so I decided I'd start making some again. The fishing wasn't spectacular, but we caught our fair share of fish. Hope you enjoy! Also, I'm hosting a trip to Naknek River Camp in August 2025 and have a few spots available. If y...

Some nice chunkers for Chatfield man🤘🏻 also, good to see you going to the "Naknek" in AK I guided at sportsman's lodge a few years on the Kvichak river which is pretty darn close to the Nak. I wanna see some footage next August or so when you get back and hope you get into them well man,. Tight lines 🤘🏻
During a western governors conference the question was asked of all the governors… What is your favorite sporting goods store ? Many said ..Cabelas .. some said Bass Pro …. Others said Scheels Governor Polis said he and his husband loved Dick’s 😂😂😂😂
Excuse me but as a California Polis supporter ….. Shouldn’t it be Cheese person ?
It’s pretty fk secret bch
There are much better places 60-90 minutes from Denver.
I definitely agree on that statement!! This might be a hot take, but I’d say clear creek is a better fishery 😬 but that’s my opinion, thanks for watching!!
plastic eggs and fishing the reds....hell of a fisherman
@@andywiggens1069 thanks but I don’t fish redds. Like I mentioned in the video I fish deep, slow water during this time of year which is the opposite place of where redds are. I appreciate the concern though and it’s unfortunate that many anglers do so, thanks for watching!
The Haydays of the great Blue River fishing days is past history, thanks to CDPW. Was fortunate enough to be fishing it hardcore in the 80s and 90s.
I’ve heard awesome stories from back in the day, wish I was able to experience myself! Same goes for the frying pan, taylor, and cheesman. Thanks for watching!
@xaviergonfishin Yeah, I feel bad for you, younger guys, but hopefully you can all work to return what once was. DOW in all their wisdom took out premier boulders just below the old wood Bridge decades ago. Those Boulders housed double-digit bows, and you got there before sunlight to beat other guys to those prime Boulder runs. They took em out and made that ridiculous channel. Then arctic char in Dillon to diminish the Mysis shrimp. Got nothing good to say about CDPW.
Just do a simple Dave Portnoy rating. I’d give the blue a 4.2. And that’s because chipotle is right there.
🤣🤣 I should definitely do that for a video!
@@xaviergonfishin one fish, everybody knows the rules.
But it's still fun..
@@dankochanek8056 couldn’t agree more! I love the blue, thanks as always Dan 😎
I have caught lake trout and brook trout the laker came out of the tunnels and that run off behind that chipotle has wild brook trout in it 🔥
I’ve certainly seen them caught out of the blue before, but I’ve never had the opportunity to tangle with them. I’m glad you were able to get both, definitely don’t hear that too often! Thanks for watching 😎🤘
when you say the words---- that will about rap it up, IMMEDIATELY hold up the flies you just used. You have no idea how much it helps the viewers!
@@headlinerish I tried my best in this video to show the flies I was using. I believe I showed 4 of them, either on the rig or in the fish’s mouth. But I appreciate the constructive criticism, I always am aiming to make videos that viewers WANT to watch and not getting tricked into watching. Thanks for watching!!
I just subscibed to your channel. PLEASE slow down for a second and explain what you tied on and why! it would helpall of us who are new to colorado. too many videos just show the fishin and dont show the flies. like your videos, thanx
SO SICK
@@omardelamora1563 haha thank you, wasn’t action packed but definitely some cool fish. Thanks for watching!
Great job pushing though and making it happen! Congrats on the PB!
@@lostwatersflyfishing thank you so much, certainly wasn’t what we were expecting but there’s always a way to get after them! Thanks for watching
Kinda sad they don’t allow ice fishing there anymore :/ you got close! Great video!
@@currentfisher got really close!! Way too close honestly 😅 looking for that ice off for this lake in hopes to catch some other species as well. Thanks for watching 😎🤘
Great work!!!!
@@thomasfrank4051 thanks Thomas I appreciate the kind words!!!
Thanks for your help, brother. Just built my leader!!! What’s your formula for streamers again?
@@thomasfrank4051 for a sink tip line, I like to run about a foot of 20lb, barrel swivel, and then 2-3ft of 16lb. For floating I run 4ft sections of each with the barrel swivel in the middle. Hope the leaders work for you!!
@ thanks for your time to respond. This confirms my suspicions that I’ve been fishing too short of a streamer leader on my float line. How long do you go on float line in extreme cases? Ever go longer than the 8’ mentioned above?
@ I wouldn’t go over 8’ personally, too much disconnect from your fly line to your fly at that length
Looks like a great day on the water!
I’m from Utah, been fly fishing for a couple years now…I love it…it’s addicting…anyways, I’m planning on being there in late August (Gregory Allen isakov at the red rocks lol. ) and would like to try clear creek… any particular mile marker I’d look for to do some wet wading? Anything helps
When you're in Colorado, stop in Golden Fly Shop and I'd be happy to point you in the right place! Thanks for watching
@@xaviergonfishinthank you! That’ll be awesome 👏…ill be in
Love that first section where the little bows like to live. There are some really nice pools just a little further up the road that hold some nice browns. Keep up the fun fishing videos.
@@jonathansouthworth3342 thank you for the kind words! And I agree those pools are fantastic, too bad the ice is now showing up
Are you aware that for a brief time in the late 80's, the state rainbow trout record was caught in Clear Creek just below Georgetown Lake? I remember as an adventurous teen with a motorcycle, fishing damn near every inch I could access the Clear Creek from Silver Plume ALL THE WAY to where it confluences with the South Platte in Denver off 76 after reading the news in The Rocky Mountain News sports section about that record catch.
That's incredible, I had no idea that Clear Creek had the record rainbow for a moment. I would love to see that photo!! Thanks for watching
if you catch a 12" trout that is a monster in that creek
@@andywiggens1069 haha yeah no kidding. That’s why I love fishing it with a 3wt to make the fight with the smaller fish more fun! Thanks for watching
Was your first fish a Rainbow? Had a very interesting pattern on its sides.
Yes it was a juvenile rainbow! Thanks for watching
The most slippery creek in all of Colorado, any time of the year. If you want to learn how to dance, walk across this stream!
IMO, the Eagle is worse.
@@06mcrowley Is the Eagle a creek?
Clear is definitely a slippery one! I avoid wading it as much as possible haha
@@06mcrowleythe eagle is definitely not an easy wade! I’d say my least favorite to wade is probably the Fork, definitely my fair share of dunked waders there 😅 thanks for watching
nice.

Glad you enjoyed and thank you for the feedback! I’m always looking to make videos as transparent and educational as possible!
Awesome man!🔥🔥🔥 Gotta love clear creek
Clear Creek is such a fantastic fishery so close to Denver!! Can’t get enough of it 😤🤜🤛 thanks for watching!
@@xaviergonfishin of course, I usually go higher up on Clear Creek to go for cutthroat so do you mind me asking where this is on Clear Creek
@@FranklinFlyFishesStop by Golden Fly Shop and I'd be more than happy to point you to this area!
@@xaviergonfishin ok, I might stop by tomorrow
Still need to check out cheesman... we fish every other section of the s.platte. It looks so cool down there. Nice video!
these are the guys who ruined cheesman canyon
Does the middle co river, closer to the pumphouse freezes over? I wanted to go there last week but i feel like its too snowy to wade and sprawl through the trail.
Great video really like to content however make sure and dip your hand in the water before picking up the fish, please :) I’ve seen so many fish with the white patches on them recently probably spawners, but still, I think some have been mishandled
Thank you for your concern, but my hands are inherently getting wet when I’m grabbing a fish that’s in the water. No need to add an extra step if my hands are getting wet while actively grabbing them! I’m all about fish safety and handling as I appreciate these fish as much, if not more than anyone else! Thank you for watching and I most certainly appreciate you giving awareness on fish handling, it is certainly not talked about enough! Gives me a good idea on a future video … 🤔🤜🤛
West slope cutthroat
When I used to Steelhead fish, I would see all kinds of spawning salmon with that off color in the rivers. They almost looked like they were glowing. Great video again. Looking forward to the next one Xavier!!
Oh yeah they stick out like a sore thumb! Always appreciate the watch Dan!!
Good video... beautiful stretch of river. However, the sick fish has "the death fungus" from being mishandled too many times... NOT from being attacked by other males during the spawn.
I think some of those fish actually do get that way from spawning they knock around in the gravel and fight each other so hard that they knock slime off of themselves. Hoping the author of the video dips his hand in the water before handling the fish
Glad you’re back uploading again Xavier. Those were some beautiful browns!
Thank you so much for the kind words, definitely was spoiled this day!
Appreciate you take the gloves off before handling fish. However are you also wetting your hands ?
Precious ... which state?

The biggest trout in Colorado don't live in a river. They're in Blue Mesa Reservoir.
whats the fly again?
Awesome video! Appreciate the variety of locations in your videos. Your write ups are great as well.
This was a good one for sure. But it's still dry dropper season for me.
Love it! You should do a video on that egg rig you have. I’m not sure what’s going on there, but it looks like it works! 😄
It’s a pegged bead rig! I would make a video but there’s a ton of information on the rig already and I don’t want to be redundant!
Glad to see you back man!
Thank you for the kind words, definitely going to be making a lot more content in the future!
When was this video shot? I see you just put it out a day ago. Thx. Love the South Platte. Fish Deckers A lot
Back in February, just some old footage I never edited! Thanks for watching
Nice
Great video. I’ve never been to this location, can you please tell me how long and how difficult is the hike into the canyon? I’m a little older and have a few physical issues, and would like to attempt to fish here someday. Thanks, look forward to more videos from you.
The hike from the lower parking lot isn’t terrible, but there’s still some elevation that’s gained and lost. I would say the majority of people can do it, but deckers fishes just as well and is much easier access! Thanks for watching
@ Thank you very much for the information.
Good stuff Xavier!
Thanks Dan, appreciate you watching!
