How to Change the Oil on Your Ducati Monster: Step-by-Step Guide!
Hey! I recently fitted my Ducati Monster 1200 with new oil and filter. The steps required will be very similar for other Ducati models such as the Monster 1100, 821, 796 and 696. Hopefully this video can help you do this action yourself!
Products:
These are the items and tools I use to change the oil and filter.
- 17mm socket (For the new filter)
- Hex 5 socket, with (toque) wrench
- Copper Washer ring 10mm
- Protective gloves
- Oil 15W50 (minimum 4 liters)
- Oil Filter (K&N 153)
- Oil filter spider wrench (for removing the old filter)
- Funnel (to add new oil)
- Oil collection container "Ikea Samla" (not shown, sorry)
Step-By-Step Guide:
Warm-up
This operation has to be carried out with hot engine (but turned off) because the oil in these conditions is more fluid and comes out faster and completely.
Open up refill cap
This way the old oil drains away better.
Remove oil plug
Unscrew with Hex 5 socket wrench.
Place a container under the oil.
Be careful, the oil may be hot
Wait until everything is collected in the container
Insert oil plug
Remove any metal deposits from the magnetic part and clean the thread.
Install the new washer ring. Tighten the plug to a torque of 20 Nm.
Remove old filter
The space for a good grip is limited, this "Spider" wrench offers a good solution.
Install New filter
Lubricate seal with engine oil. Screw it into seat and tighten it to 11 Nm.
New oil (15w-50)
Remove the cap and carry out refilling up to reaching the notch that identifies the MAX level.
Screw cap on and run the engine at idle speed for a few minutes.
The level will drop, add some more oil so that it is between the 2 lines.
-
Important notes
* Place your motorcycle upright
* Also change the mesh filter every 2 times. (not done now)
* Be careful, the oil can be very hot.
* I am not a mechanic, I have consulted the workshop manual as much as possible. If in doubt, leave it to the professionals in the garage.

A good friend sent me this special gift. A Lego Ducati Panigale V4R. While building with my eldest son, memories and feelings from the past came up. It got me thinking. Hopefully it can motivate you to pursue the same feeling :) In any case, thank you very much for watching. #motorbike #motorcycle #ducati #build

how is it with vibrations?
In my opinion, very good. No problems at all. I am very satisfied with the visibility. Are you considering these mirrors? Thanks for your question.
thank for your reply! Yes I am considering this bar end but I am concerned with the bar vibration. I had this issue with DPM bar ends on my mt-07 since the bar ends were lighter than the OEM ones.
@georgiospergeris6146 ok ok. These are probably just as heavy, if not heavier, because of the mounting mechanism in the bar. This part goes inside the bar.
@georgiospergeris6146 Rizoma bar-end adapters are they called.
slip-on or full?

Thanks. 🙏
Thank you very much. Very helpful.
You are welcome! Nice to hear that it was helpful. 🙂
i have never seen such a detailed video before, this is perfect
All great videos and helpful. Looking forward to doing the same thing shortly to my 1200s
Curious what tune you decided to go with. Putting this exact exhaust on my 1200S too. Was thinking abiut going with the termi upmap. It doesnt have one loaded currently. What are your thoughts and what did you end up doing?
Hey Cris, to be honest, I had the Termignoni Upmap loaded, because it was installed before the Werkes. In my opinion, this upmap was not entirely suitable, because it did not run smoothly. Not disturbing, but certainly not perfect. I have now replaced the Werkes for a new Termignoni system, as I found the sound of the Werkes too loud :) I think, in your case, that it is best to drive without upmap, I think that is also what Werkes advises through their website. You could test that anyway. I wish you much wisdom :) Cheers
Thank you! I picked up an insert for the werkes too just incase it was too much at certain times. I'm gonna run it clean and see what comes up!
What size?
Hé man. 80mm (medium)
Awesome, thanks for the response!
Is this slip ons or full exhaust ??
This is only slip-on. A re-map is recommended for correct adjustment. Because you are removing the cat, this is necessary. I believe that Competion Werkes itself indicates that it is not necessary.
Are you considering this exhaust? M curious!
Is this only a slip ons or full exhaust ?? Did you have to remap the ecu ?

Great video!
Thanks Moose :) Did it help you with a similar action?
@@DucatiEch I think I did the same as you purchased a wrecked monster and put it back into riding condition. Great videos bro appreciate the help!
Nice to hear. Thank you man! I'm curious about your motorcycle. @@moose2590
Looking great out there brother
Thanks. I can't wait to take the first ride of the year again. Unfortunately haven't gotten around to it yet. You've already done it right!?

@@DucatiEch What is the cost of this sound?
I bought this second hand via Ebay. I think I paid about $450.
@@DucatiEch thanks
You're welcome. Do you also ride Ducati?
Oooofff
Brutal ❤
Hmm to open for my taste
Thanks. After a few rides I realized that I agree with you. Termis sound is more refined.
Hey! Have you ever carried out this maintenance yourself and do you have any useful tips, post them below! Or if you have a question, feel free to ask. Thanks!
WOULD YOU LOOK AT THATTTTTT
Looks good brother
i took break off and that rod came out. i put back in now the foot break is not as strong as before, i find my self having to push hard down just to slow up a little. any help would be great
Which "rod" do you mean? Could it be that air has gotten into the line? To bleed this brake it is necessary to disassemble the brake caliper, because it hangs upside down. As a result, some air always remains at the top of the caliper and the brake feels spongy. I struggled with this for a while too.
@@DucatiEch yes i loosened it and it fell out i put it back in and it was f up. took 2 ducati and apparently they had to replace them from them models under warranty due to fault in the design. its fixed now for free they put whole new line in
Nice video. If you have fuel in the tank does any leak when you remove the quick disconnects?
I think if you keep the tank straight, there will be little leakage. To be on the safe side, could you empty it completely with a self-made drain?
Hi, I have a monster 1200s with similar damage to yours, how did you fix the steering limit block on the fork? thanks
Hey Paul. How nice to hear! I made a custom metal bracket, which is installed on a mounting point of the headlight. This still works well. In any case, good enough to save the costs of a new triple clamp. If you want I can take a picture of it and email it to you?
I need this fuel tank for my own Ducati, looks shiny ! :-)
Thanks! Just enjoy cleaning! It'll be fine!
Everytime I think you started posting again and sike, it's a short from last year suddenly popping up in my feed lol.
What’s was torque nm on the 2 screws?
I’m sorry, which 2 screws?
@@DucatiEch screws next to ignition’s key
You should make more How To videos of the M1200. How about next replacing the battery.
Thanks. I’ll consider it. Last thing I did was changing the oil. Is that something interesting?
Can’t get enough of this and I have the same set up on a 2018 with the carbon Werkes. Do you prefer this over Termi?…I do. I keep thinking of going SC project, but I can’t seem to want to pass on the Werkes sound.
Hey! Thanks for your sub. The sound is beautiful and beastly. However, for me personally after several months of testing, still too loud. I am now back with the termis and can appreciate the refinement. In addition, my mapping has also been adapted to the Termis, which also gives it a better riding experience. The SC Project is also really beautiful, but I don't think there are any official db killers for this, so the sound will be even heavier than the Werkes. I wish you good luck with your choice! Thank you!
Nice! To me, that exhaust sounds better than the termignoni. I thought about sc project as well, but I can’t part with the Werkes sound.
Very helpful video mate. Thanks
Hey. Nice to hear that you got something out of it. Are you working on a similar ducati project? Thanks for your sub.
@@DucatiEch I’m actually looking to buy this 2018 1200 S and would love to upgrade the rear set. You did great with your restoration with your 1200S.
Hey Nice that you may also become part of the Monster family soon. Would love to hear from you if you have it! Good luck!
@@DucatiEch I’m currently own a monster but would love to upgrade to a 1200S

Hey, thanks man. I see that I unintentionally turned off the comments on that video! Thanks for your message. Great to hear that you liked the video. It's kind of crazy considering that the video that took the most time to make and came the most from the heart gets the least views :)
@@DucatiEch That's usually how that goes.😔😔😔😔🤣
Those are pretty
Did u just need to get it tuned for the exhaust? U didnt need to buy any extra stuff
Do you notice big change by using db killer, specially while riding?
To be honest, I haven't ridden without the db-killer yet. I think the sound with db-killer installed is very loud and I don't want it louder :)
My problem is that while riding, it get way too loud...like it hurts my ears
Definitely one of the best looking motorcycles ever built.
1:24 was that grease or threadlock ?
It was grease 🙂
are you busy with a similar project?
Not removing the DB killer?
No thanks. It’s loud enough with db killer 😉
What size spacers were those for existing bolts?
Hi Michael. What do you mean? The spacers on the OEM mirror attachments?
When you installed the slip-on exhaust, did you have an issue with the engine running lean? Was it revving too high on idle? Any mapping issues?
