The once-thriving industry that took place on this island has gradually moved overseas, leaving many of the industries struggling to survive.

This video is made of parts thrown together, unlike the industrial landscape which is purposeful, complex and ever-changing.
Rail-to-Barge Coal Transfer Facility
This transfer facility has a dumping-shed with open grates on a hillside next to the river. Coal trains come in and the cars pause over the grates to dump the coal from the mine. The coal then goes up a conveyor belt to a silo from which it is transferred to barges. The barges carry the coal to places such as the power plant up the river, which just installed scrubbers to remove chemicals, incl...
W. A. Young Foundry and Machine Shop, Rices Landing, PA
George Carter, P.E., provided this tour of the W. A. Young Machine Shop on Water Street in Rices Landing, PA, on the Monongahela River. Built in 1899, Young used an H. L. Shepard & Co. belt-driven lathe for wood working. Later his sons added pattern making and a foundry. Now 40 machines operate on a single belt system (information from George Carter in the Society for Industrial Archaeology, 20...

Dean Helfer, founder of the American-made toy company, Channel Craft, explains the use of a CNC router in the manufacture of wooden toys. The business is in a former U. S. Army Corps of Engineers warehouse building along the Monongahela River in Charleroi, PA. This tour was arranged by George Carter for the Society for Industrial Archaeology in 2009.
Edward Lenik on American Indian Rock Art in the Northeast
The full title of this book is "Making Pictures in Stone: American Indian Rock Art of the Northeast." It is a follow-up to Ed's last book, "Picture Rocks: American Indian Rock Art in the Northeast Woodlands." Both document a little known cultural artifact - Native American carvings, like those in the southwest, exist in the northeast as well. They are very hard to see but Ed has documented them...
Kevin Olsen on the Maritime History of Northeastern New Jersey
The full title of this book is "A Great Conveniency: A Maritime History of the Passaic River, Hackensack River and Newark Bay." Kevin wrote it gradually over 10 or 20 years as he gathered information, published parts, and finally published the whole. Richly illustrated, it covers the role that local waterways have played in the development of riverfront towns and surrounding areas, concluding w...
Carol Siri Johnson on "The Language of Work"
This is a shameless ad for my academic book, "The Language of Work." Buy it. It's a must-have. You can't live without it. Honest. Seriously, it's about industrial history in a rolling mill from the viewpoint of technical communication, which I teach at New Jersey Institute of Technology. If you're not a literary scholar, skip the first chapter. If you don't care about technical communication, s...
Metal Shredding and Sorting: the Process
This film was taken during a tour of a metal shredding, sorting and recycling plant. I apologize for the jerky footage but I was walking while filming. I tried to show the process cranes dropping crushed cars and other scrap metal onto the main conveyor, from which it dropped into the shredder. From that point, different types of metals were sorted using different processes and a system of conv...
Metal Shredding and Sorting II
This is the scrap metal, including crushed cars, at the top of the conveyor before dropping into the shredder box with a disc rotor to shred the metal into pieces. It has a smart water injection system and an auto pilot that is controlled by a computer interface.
Metal Shredding and Sorting Plant
This is one clip of a series of movies I took from a trip to visit this scrap metal shredding, sorting and recycling plant. I will post more movies up here soon from this, and other, sites, about the industrial history of the US. OK, this plant is still operating so it isn't history but it's pretty cool.

No. Most of what we know about American Indians comes from AMERICAN INDIANS WHO STILL EXIST HERE AND ARE PERFECTLY CAPABLE OF INTERPRETING OUR OWN CULTURES AND HISTORIES. But that's a cute Eurocentric misnomer though.

Hello, Dr. Lenik. This gentleman has the respect to speak to Native American individuals about our culture, something standard that is often ignored. May your path and your home be blessed.

Why are the shafts running so slow? That cannot be how the shop was operated.

Im surprised the DEP doesnt make you put up the floating barriers around the barge in case some of the debris falls into the water.

Why does this operation have to be so close to a river? It looks like metal is going into the river and nobody cares. Someone should care to stop it. If you don't take care of water,it has a way of getting you back.
