This is one of the best telefilms ever made. It’s a no-frills affair but it doesn’t need any; the magic is in the acting and the writing, and the stripped-down nature of the production only adds to the realism. Dick Van Dyke is absolutely heartbreaking as the genial but self-destructive alcoholic Charlie, a powerhouse performance that is so utterly real, and Lynn Carlin is right up there as his long-suffering wife Fran; Linda Lavin turns up briefly as a fun-loving drunken girl who tries to pick up on Charlie at an office party. Written by the legendary Richard Matheson, one of the best things he’s ever done. I love THE LOST WEEKEND, but it’s definitely a stylized Hollywood job; THE MORNING AFTER is just plain real. It’s a crime that this film isn’t available in an official DVD or Blu-ray release, but, since the Beatles song Yesterday is featured prominently throughout the film, as it’s the lead character’s fave tune and he sings it to himself a few times, music rights issues will probably forever doom it to grey market status. It has never been officially released on any format anywhere in the world. Best DVD-R I have found is from Mod Cinema, a quite watchable off-air recording, which is at least complete except for a few seconds at the very beginning of the opening credits; I’ve seen a copy or two that are missing a bit here and there.

It is actually a decent movie, other than the propaganda it wanted to spread! The Satanic Panic was the best thing to make D&D popular to the young folks! If the religious and authority figures are against it, then it was worth checking out!

I'm sure he's not an ex-cop with PTSD, but an artist who made money and his druggie brother and his family were going to kidnap his kids for the ransom money. The police contacted him and had him assist on a bust of the family, who resisted and so he got PTSD by seeing his brother and his family killed in front of him.

I was fortunate enough to get a VHS tape of this movie and I know it sounds strange but the fact that it is the only tv movie I can think of that didn't have a happy ending made it a better movie, it made it more hard htting and realistic
