Landing on Oyster Hill
มุมมอง 785 หลายเดือนก่อน
9th May 2024. Worcestershire Beacon. Advance Sigma 10. There were thermals, but I only got up to about 800m. I had a problem with my speed bar; the elastic had broken holding the foot stirrup in position. I retied it, but too short, so had to untie it again. I glided out to Oyster Hill, 5.5km from where I started. My wife and daughter drove out to get me.

Worcestershire Beacon, wind from the north. Good enough thermals. The forecast had been for lighter wind and I had been hoping to fly beyond Worcester and back, but following thermals took me off to the South. I almost got to the clouds at one point. Landed at the edge of Malvern and got a lift from my mother-in-law.
Almost an hours flying

Wednesday 1st May 2024. I walked up the hill with my wife. Got to the top of the Worcestershire Beacon just after 11:00. There were two paragliderists on the hill, who I chatted to. When I was ready to launch, I could see a buzzard climbing lower down the ridge, but then I lost sight of it again. Some wind came through and I launched straight into a thermal and worked it above the hill. I got t...

Friday the 26th of April 2024. I walked up the hill just before 10:30 and got to the east take off just before 11. I was the only paraglider up there. I had forgotten to pack the cable for my helmet camera, so only got the first half of the flight on video. Despite being the least windiest day I've flown in this year, there was still quite a bit of wind. It wasn't the best launch. As the wing w...

Sunday 14th April 2024. My first time paragliding in over 7 months. It was forecast to be almost too windy. It almost was too windy. I spent at least an hour flying around in front of the hill waiting for the thermals to get good enough, as it got steadily windier. I really wanted to leave the hill and I ended up taking a thermal over the back without a huge amount of height. There was scary tu...

Friday 8th September 2023. The forecast was predicting 4 star thermals at 3pm and 4pm. I got up the hill just after 1:30pm and waited for a couple of hours. At 3pm there were some small swirls of wind. I moved over to the west side of the hill. At about 3:45 I launched where some small birds were flying around infront of the hill. There were thermals trying to go up, but they were trapped by an...

Saturday 2nd September 2023. There were meant to be 5 star thermals at 3pm. I got up the hill for about 1pm. I did lots of short flights until I ended up at the bottom at 3:45pm. I counted 16 landings. It was a good workout.
A Brief Moment of Ecstasy
มุมมอง 107ปีที่แล้ว
An afternoon off work, getting near to cloudbase on my paraglider, getting a wave returned by a sailplane and getting treated to a close flyby all combine to induce a brief moment of ecstasy, which is embarrassingly audible in my voice. 20 minutes later I was back on earth and back to reality in Worcester.

I love your life!
:) me too. But I don't do this every day. I have to go to work, do DIY, washing up, etc. I only went paragliding 12 times this year, hoping to do more next year.
nice one! It was proper cold day high up! btw- its a good practice to add a link to the flight in description ;>

aww wish id known about you guys, i live in MK and would have liked to see you guys come in and land. 🙂 awesome stuff!
🙂It's hard to plan ahead. We kind of go where the wind blows us. 2 of us landed in different parts of MK and 1 of us got to the other side of Bedford.
@@danheeksparagliding yeah i guess, ive never done anything like that myself, so wouldnt know. how do you find the thermals? i thought it was something to do with farmers fields or at the sides of hills with up draft?
@@drtydawg73 Yes, we have to start from the side of a hill, partly to give us some altitude to start with, but also because the wind blowing up the side gives us lift. I carry a variometer which beeps when I'm climbing, so I circle when I'm going up. On the flat land, predicting where the thermals are going to be is quite tricky. The thermals are generated by baking hot ground warming the air, so flying over the ground that has had the sun on it for a while is a good plan. In the spring, the green fields are cold and damp so are not so good; the urban areas are the best. In the summer, the dry looking, brown fields can be great too. Where the thermal is generated isn't always where it chooses to release from, though, so things get complicated. I think we all have loads of theories, but still just fly downwind and hope we hit a thermal. :)
@@danheeksparagliding cool, very interesting stuff. thanks for sharing. 🙂
I liked the view of the glider. It impresses me how you manage to land in small fields and parks. 🙂
Yes, I sometime look up at the glider for a while and wonder in disbelief how a plastic bag and some strings are holding me up in the sky. This field was about as small as I feel comfortable landing in, you can sometimes hit some lifting air, but this field I could I done a circle within the boundaries of it if necessary.
Another awesome cross-country adventure. Presumably, as an aircraft, you are allowed to land in any open ground.
Thanks. I'm not entirely sure on the law. I imagine that if I had planned to land on this field, then I should probably have asked permission from the land owner. However, I had not intended to land on this field. I think there is plenty of precedent so say that it is ok for people to go gliding and that when you go gliding, you can't always choose where you are going to land. Obviously if you cause damage when you land, then you would be liable for that damage. I guess if I had landed in the field which I had hoped to land in, then it could be said that I was landing without permission. I think what is more relevant to paraglider pilots, regardless of the laws, is to be considerate and respectful to others. I have never had a complaint from someone about my activities when I've landed on a public park like this. Landing on a farmers field is usually more worrying. I flew over a prison on this flight. Obviously there would be a lot of inconvenience if I landed there!
They’ve definitely got a weed grow
Reminds me of a Charlie say's advert from the late seventies in the story telling. Well done for getting down safely and brokering a truce with the farmer. 👍
What is that beeping? I’m assuming some pressure sensor to indicate thermals but I’m guessing, help 😂
Yes, exactly that. We call it a vario
No comment on the landing but Fish & Chips AND Pizza? Shameful
Why would you publish his field location? Wasn't it clear enough that he values his privacy?
You ARE the legend Dan!
Yes you can land wherever you want! That man/owner/farmer is a p…k! Get off my land!! It is land we all share and which he is custodian of. Fortunately, all ended well.
Hang on.... 2 takeaway's? Obviously trying to increase your glide speed on another flight! Nice flight btw
I had a hot air balloon try to land in the middle of my corn field once. Getting it out would have destroyed many bushels of corn. I chased them off. The arrogance of these types is disturbing.
Omg Milton Keens looks depressing 😢
@2:29 absolutely spectacular view! wow like looking at a stain glass mosaic
I landed my hang glider in a single family home back yard maybe 3/4 acre small surrounded by 50 foot trees. The owners and grandkids were ELATED!!!!
You MUST always tell the landowner "I will not tell anyone about your DRUG operation..."
Fish and chips AND pizza!?
We didn't all have the same food. :)
Cool. Loved the way you showed the trajectory. Is this from GPS with altimetry or a true 3d fix?
The app ( XCGuide ) on my phone uses GPS to store a track log ( .igc ) file, which I can convert to .kmz ( github.com/twpayne/igc2kmz.py ) and view with Google Earth. I select the coloured by climb rate option. The altitude is just from the GPS.
Nice one. That's where I sometimes fly my FPV quads. That's where we had our COVID testing centre but the now site has redevelopment plans to become a college.
Great! That explains why on openstreetmap.org it is labelled as Milton Keynes University. I think next time I would land next to Tear Drop Lakes maps.app.goo.gl/EK22JEEpnsLMJy2Z7
If there’s no lift you just have to pick a safe place to land.
He has got a point tbh, your hobby is one of those that does have some sort of effect on others, I realise that effect in this case was only the landowner needing to open a gate but nevertheless
Doesn’t that beeping ruin the ambience of peaceful flight?
Theres always a prick farmer wanting to cry about something. They are lonely and have nothing better to be doing
20 year paramotor pilot here - I have had LOADS of issues with this, and with refusing permission for taking off in England. I have only once had a similar issue in scotland (a jobs worth in cairngorm) - not sure if scotland is the exception or england but my money is on little englanders - pathetic little minded people.
Just playing devil’s advocate here. A question to all you flyers of ‘something’ How would you like it if people just randomly walked through your garden or even through the front door of your house and out the back door?
In Scotland The Land Reform Act 2003 gives everyone rights of access over land and inland water throughout Scotland, subject to specific exclusions set out in the Act and as long as they behave responsibly. These rights are sometimes referred to as 'freedom to roam'.
@@TheDogmadave So as long as people act responsibly, you wont mind them walking through your garden?
Not the same though is it? Your analogy would be more appropriate as "would you flip out if kids walked into your front yard to retrieve their frisbee". Both the landing and getting the frisbee are unplanned, incidental events, unlike someone walking through your house.
@@cragonaut I appreciate what your saying, however, and correct me if I’m wrong, is there a certain acceptance when you go up in a paraglider or similar that your landing zone is not always planned or predetermined. Or to put it another way, If I go for a drive in my car, I’m 100% certain I can arrive at my pre-determined destination without encroaching on private property, however with paragliders been heavily influenced by wind and thermals you accept the fact that you wont always hit your preferred landing zone, and there is potential (whether that be high or low) for landing on private property. To use your frisbee analogy, it may have landed in my garden accidently however if they are throwing it from the garden to my left over my garden to the garden on my right then the chances of it landing it my garden are quite high and this would have been known and accepted by the throwers before they started. In which case, if they then went into my garden without asking, yes I would be annoyed.
@@utube1818from what you've written it almost sounds like you want to be annoyed at things. cheer up; it's never worth it
Well.. The property owner was absolutely correct. You can't just land anywhere you want. You'd need a fully operational paramotor engine and sufficient fuel to do that. No aviator anywhere really gets to 'land anywhere they want'. Only avians can do that! :) Since your not the latter.. you had to land in his field. In a glider.. .every landing is "forced". :D
Pigeon Passport Sheeple 😂 Vacuum my personality
What are all the beeps about? I thought it was some 8bit tune at one point.
It's a flight instrument called a vario. It tells me when I'm going up.
So after the initial shock of some random person landing on his field he was amicable , nothing wrong with that.
What’s he hiding on that farm ?
What happens if you get injured whilst landing, is the farmer liable? If so he has every right to be angry.
My one burning question: Which one of you had the fish and chips? 😃
They can say what they like. Half of this country is fuck as thick, 52%, so you'll get weird ideas like doing what they like and fcuk what anyone thinks. Have to accept the consequences of your actions once you aren't a child. I this case the landowner didn't sound too bad at all, let him pack up in the field. Not really sure what the video is for but to divide
Worth pointing out that there's no crime of trespass when you land from the air. Provided you pack up your kit and vacate the field immediately, that's allowed. If however you leave the field and then return to get your gear, then that is when trespass becomes an issue.
That's Herefordshire for you.
Your title. Answer to the ignorant. Yes he can. Just not a good idea if the pilot wants to use that land again.
Strikes me that if your hobby relies on the goodwill of other people then you don't have a right to get upset when they are not happy about being involved in it without consent.
He didn’t seem upset 😂 just sharing his experience with an angry farmer, no one expects everyone in the world to be a ray of sunshine.
Or just don’t be a miserable git over nothing?
Pretty much every activity relies on the goodwill of other people. Furthermore, he wasn’t upset, the miserable git was. 😂
@@Make_Boxing_Great_Again "Pretty much every activity relies on the goodwill of other people" What are you talking about? Most peoples hobbies don't effect anyone else at all let alone rely on them allowing you to use their property for free without permission.
@@popuptoaster Technically I’m correct because how can you research your hobby without the good will of people putting free information on the internet and forums etc.
Apart from the annoying beeping sounds that looked amazing.
Great story love a good flight glad he chilled out, huge flex on fish n chips and pizza what a king haha
I've experienced this myself as a former glider pilot. I doesn't matter how empty or deserted or seemingly abandoned the field you land in might be, someone will nearly always have I derisory comment to make. I remember waiting for my retrieve crew one day when an elderly gentleman came past. Seeing the glider he looked at me and said 'Oh, ran out of petrol have we?' I summoned up my best French accent and replied 'Non electricity monsieur.' He wandered off mouthing 'Bloody foreigners!' under his breath.
Didn't happen. Sounds like a dig at old people being racist.
Wow I would be elated if someone landed in my paddock 😊
Dude, you got R2D2 with you? What is that beeping?
sounds like a wonderful afternoon =)
We've had a couple of hot-air balloons come down in our fields over the years and never had a problem with them doing so. So long as they make a bit of an effort to avoid crops and livestock it isn't a problem, one came down in a paddock full of ponies and the only problem the balloonists had was some very interested nags trying to see what was going on. You do hear stories though, one farmer nearby threatened to sue the air ambulance for landing in one of his fields, there wasn't even any crop for it to damage or livestock to spook, and they actually saved a life as a result. But he is a complete tw-t.
Don’t take it to heart, ultimately it is private land, once you explain to them the situation and circumstances they’ll generally be fine with it
If you land in a farmer's field in France, he comes out with his lovely daughter, a bottle of wine, some bread and cheese, then gives you a ride back to launch.
No idea why your video popped up on the telly but it was very entertaining. Paragliding looks awesome!
3:53 - I assume this is the stage where you explain that you didn't intent landing there... His body language tells me, that's not good enough and he expects a toll
