Wow!
Just a disclaimer for this video - I thought jobfish were allowed to be speared where I was but only found out now they were not. At least I missed but it was just a misunderstanding
They're rather cute.
Shooting/ catching jobfish is illegal at cape vidal btw
@@LucScalliet howsit. Thanks for your comment. I was not aware of this, thought they were considered a gamefish I was told i can shoot them, ah well.
Well done. From an old KZN spearo.

Sadly, dusky kob are at 1.3% of their pristine biomass (2023). Likely to be recategorized from endangered to critically endangered next year by the IUCN. Silver and squaretail are *slightly* better off, if you can tell the difference before firing, but I am nowhere near good enough, especially when it's sandy.
Well the decline definitely has nothing to do with spearfisherman, its trawlers and long line fisherman doing the damage. A kob is a fine fish to take when spearfishing since it is rare to get a oppurtunity on them here and they are excellent eating. I do not think you get silver kob here, only dusky. I do agree its sad how fish numbers have taken down for lots of species and i hope it can be reversed!
@@Jeanlerouxspearfishing I'm afraid that's not true. We love to blame trawlers and commercials for our woes, but a lot of our species are hit inshore. Most of the pressure comes from recreationals, boats and shore, with an unknown element from illegal gillnets in estuaries. I encourage you to google "status of south african marine fishery resources 2023" (I can't post a link here). Spearos like us aren't the main contributor for dusky kob, true, but do we really want to contribute, even in a small way, to this decline? 1.3% is absolutely critical, possibly beyond collapsed. I really hope the government can impose a total fishing ban on dusky kob, ASAP. Luckily we have good fish in SA, many of which you have seen and shown us. No need to hunt the endangered species.
@@Jeanlerouxspearfishing I'm afraid that's just not true. We love to blame commercials and chinese trawlers for our woes, but the reality is that we recreationals are responsible for the decline of a lot of inshore species. I encourage you to search for "Status of the South African Marine Fishery Resources 2023". There is a good estimate of different fishing pressures on various fish (not all, sadly, but the most important, including dusky kob). The summary is that recreationals, boat and shore, comprise the vast majority of that pressure. Spearos less so, but do we really want to be adding to the strain? 1.3% is really critical. We're talking about population collapse.

@@mat86100 dude I just had a rare opportunity to try and spear a kob which basically noone in pe gets, in transkei and natal spearos are spearing them daily, i am really aware of endangered fish and choose what i want to spear, for intance i have left dozens of large rockcods. No need to get pressed
Please don't hurt them.
Why would we hurt him bro 😭
Big dang fish
Thanks my dude 🙏

nice vid. i always wondered if that area would work for fishing from the side. Now my kids can enjoy a fairly safe spot to fish.
Hey, yeah well done on figuring out the spot 😅 basically that precise area you can only get to the rocks at low tide except if you are ok to swim across it at high, when there would be more fish. But for sure a fishable spot 😊 thanks for watching!
What spot is that ?
Haha secret cray reef 😉 Port elizabeth
Joy bra, you seriously need some practice.
Dude i totaly know the feeling, i lost a beautiful snoek two weekends ago, i stil get flashes of it in my mind the whole time, had a super amazing holding shot, pulled it in and as soon as it came close the flopper went down and the shaft pulled right out and off he went😢 sucks alot hey!! Thanks dude. Yeah PE’s always beautiful
This should never have been posted
Why? Fishing is illegal of the pier. You cant spear fish on these sand flats they just swim away. Its just nice to see
He, He I'v seen a pile of sharks in my spearfishing life, The first at about 11-12 yrs of age spearfishing with Dad. My biggests about 12FT in lengh and very fat 3ft diametre when about 15 yrs of age in about 30 ft water deph. Almost had a heart atack, It was minding it's own business when I swam up to it. Went after it to chase it away making a fuss, didn't mind me, slowly went away. I swam to shore VERY fast.
Thats crazy! What type of shark was that, and where did you dive
@@Jeanlerouxspearfishing By the coast of Cata Venezuela, around 1966. It was Grey, no special markings. Most sharks I have met under 9 Ft and usualy 6-7 ft. There once a whale aproached, went by and when it came back I dove and aproached very close
I feel those screams, pure adrenaline, great clip!!!
Thanks dude 🤙
Wow. I could never!😅
What is the song?
