From forest to home - building our own house
Part 1. Sawing materials on a Norwood HD36 bandsaw from green pine lumber.
We are Olivia and Sjur, and we are building our own loghouse! We are soon moving to a small farm named Åsgård in the small village of Granberget in Engerdal county, Norway. Sjur's grandparents was the first homesteaders moving to the village in 1937. They were soon breaking ground, breeding farmanimals and building houses. In the first small house, my father and his four siblings, were born and raised.
Now we need to build a new house for ourselves. We want to use traditional building technigues and materials. It's also important for us to re-use and build with as small footprints as possible on the enviroment. A part of this house will be the old original loghouse after my grandparents. We want to share with you as much of the building prosess as we can.

This video shows how to hew timber the traditional norwegian way. At least how its done in the region where I come from. I started to make new timberhouses in 2006. The last 12 years I have mainly done traditional handcraft, and restored old loghouses. Now I work as an mountainranger and craftsman in Statskog. It's the first time I hew spruce. I have mainly worked with pine. Feshly cut spruce i...

The traditional process of hewing roofboards out of the backboard of the pinelog. Making of exact copies of the old boards from the 18 th century. Using axes and simple handtools. Traditional handcraft. Restauration of an old outhouse in Røros, a old mining town and world heritage place.

Restauration of a close to 200 years old panel or outside boarding. This takes place in Klokkarvangen, Dalsbygda, Norway. Some boards are repaired, but this video mainly showes how a smart traditional solution of making a tight corner are solved by making two new boards as copies of the old ones. The video showes the whole prosess, close to how I belive it could have been done originaly.

    Hvordan retter du selve benken?

    • @sjurasgard8581
      @sjurasgard8581 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hei! Jeg bruker en rettholt, en rubank/ langhøvel og øyemål. Hvis man sikter langs med bordet er kulene synlige, men det kreves litt øvelse. Viktig å plukke gode, rolige og stabile bord i utgangspunktet, selvsagt godt nedtørka. Sjelden jeg trenger å justere noe på benken min nå.

    Are these "backboards" a by product of milling the whole log? they look like what we call "offcuts" from a sawmill here in the US. Nice work on the hewing.

    • @sjurasgard8581
      @sjurasgard8581 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot! That is correct. In norwegian we call them "bakhon", directly translatet it will be something like "behind the square block", or offcuts as you say.

    What is acryl? putty? caulk? glue? paint?

    • @timberdoodles4647
      @timberdoodles4647 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suspect some kind of caulking.

    • @sjurasgard8581
      @sjurasgard8581 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its a kind of putty often used in modern carpentry around windowframes and in corners to hide shadows in connections. Akryl is also used in painting. Dont know the english word:-)

    Well done Sjur - I was totally absorbed in watching this video! Brilliant traditional woodworking skills nicely filmed. I admire your skills. The use of an axe instead of a saw is so interesting. Thanks for sharing this technique with us.

    So cool to see your handcraft ship my brother! 😊 Makes me wonder if the axe skill is in your DNA and inherited from other Vikings. Keep up the good work and hope to see more videos on your channel! 😊🤘

    Fin video. Hva er forskjellen på skottebenk og plogbenk?

    • @sjurasgard8581
      @sjurasgard8581 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tusen takk, det er hyggelig å høre! Plogbenk er det lokale uttrykket i sør-østerdal for skottbenk. Finnes tre skriftlige kilder fra Trysil og Elverum.

    • @otija7017
      @otija7017 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, skjønner. Er det kun denne benken som duger til å høvle gulvbord, eller kan man bruke andre oppsett? Har tenkt å prøve meg på å høvle gulvbord, men har bare vanlige høvler til not og fjær.

    • @sjurasgard8581
      @sjurasgard8581 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Når rettebordene på plogbenken er godt justerte og helt rette, så blir gulvbordene som høvles også helt rette. Det er tanken med en slik benk. Men hvis man har bord som i utgangspunktet er rette, så går det fint å lage not og fjær med enklere høvler også.

    • @otija7017
      @otija7017 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mange takk! Det var kanskje det mest oppklarende jeg har hørt frem til nå angående høvling av gulvbord. 🙂
